I am talking to you and everyone else here who reads this thread.
The current Special edition is a corpse, it's dead meat.
Although it's a rarity in cinema really now and if a screening pops up in cinema people will go to see it there is absolutely no chance of a re-release on any wide scale of the special editions or even the original films to cinemas.
If any restoration is to be made to the original film negatives it will have to be a new Special Edition version and offer something new i.e. Stereoscopic 3D with some enhancements be it physical of virtual (CGI).
This could also include the original theatrical film with the 3d version and the varying Special edition version as physical media (Blu-Ray) which would be a historical sort of relic by this point.
The Special Edition will not translate to 4K but neither will an unaltered OT translate to cinemas on any wide scale.
It would be like trying to promote seeing Original Sinbad trilogy world wide to millions of people.
