when it does get release please try not to crop it that much and thank you.

I understand we'll be losing a bit of the edges due to necessity, but honestly I don't think that minimal of cropping is something I'd consciously notice. I had to go to Screenshot Comparison before I could perceive the framing difference between the official Blu Ray of Empire and Team Negative One's Grindhouse version. Obviously I'd notice if they went from 2.35:1 to 1.85:1 or widescreen to fullscreen but it's nothing nearly that drastic. Heck, most modern TVs don't distinguish between 1.78:1 and 1.85:1 and I don't even notice the difference. Our attention just isn't focused on that part of the screen and depending on overscan we might not see that portion at all.

This. Plus, scope films are shot knowing that they will be cropped from 2.39 to 2.35 in theaters.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

We have no plans on running anything else as post-processes on the resolution. We will have updated our scans to 4k, and will be using the downscales as output.

If you want to try it out, feel free to download any of our many samples that have been posted.

Temporary as those colours may be, I don't think they've ever looked as right.

EDIT: Also, I'm flipping between your shots and their parallels in Harmy's DE 2.5, and it looks like his scenes--which are official Blu Ray-sourced--actually have slightly tighter cropping than yours. I know you say this cropping isn't complete, but at least for these shots you seem to preserve a bit more of the picture than the official BD. That surprised me.

I love the colours. The palette just "screams" both "1970's" and "Star Wars"

The Tech colors that were used as a reference from Harmy tend to blue-ish to green. The colors from the LPP are warmer, and have more of a red tint to them.

So do you think the best route would be to find a happy medium between the warmer lpp and the cooler tech?

Literally created an account to comment on how beautiful this new sample looks.

It's looking really good! Are you still accepting donations?

Those colours look fantastic - not strictly speaking accurate perhaps, but it just looks exactly how I remember it looking, before the dark times.... (Or should that be, neon-hued times?!).

Here is the last current state of the project:

We are anticipating to have a preview workprint in a few months, and previews of Reel 1 and 6 also. We are hoping for a release this year so we can move onto the other projects.

Also, someone asked about donations, since we are currently funded, we are not looking for any.

If you were not on the blogs, the only way to get the early preview is to participate here or on reddit, with appropriate on-topic comments.

Then we might consider you for addition to the list of other people.

Thanks for the update. It's great to hear you guys are being funded. A project like this deserves to be. Since I will probably have little to contribute, I will just keep expressing my admiration, and wait in line for the eventual release... :-)

Out of the box idea. Could a rear projection tv be repurposed as a front projection recorder? If you removed the internals and placed a camera at the exact angle and distance the internal projection device typically sits, then projected a film directly onto the screen from the outside ( probably with a brighter bulb to offset the translucent screen), couldn't you capture a near perfect representation of what a film looks like projected? From what I've read across the site most people seem more interested in a preservation of the cinematic experience of Star Wars, as opposed to what a proper digital scan of the negative would look like.

Is it just my screen or is there a slightly pinkish tint to the stormtroopers and lights in the last screenshots? Maybe it's supposed to be this way, but I just thought I would mention it.

There is a note at the bottom of the post stating temporary colors. It is pink tinged. You're not crazy :-P

Glad to hear that! I was about to call my psychiatrist. :-P

Color correction will be done during the final phase, on calibrated monitors, Also it will vary due to your device. It has been checked on Viewsonic and Sony Crt's, along with LG and Samsung Lcd's. All have a different look to them.

I'm starting to realize colour correction is the single most subjective thing about any Star Wars restoration so I can live with that.
