R2 doesn't taste very good

No one has mentioned that in the DVD release, Luke no longer says "Good thing you don't taste very good" when R2 is spit out of the swamp in Degobah. He now says "You were lucky to get out of there" or something TOTALLY PATHETIC like that. I noticed this because I was watching the DVD with my Dad, and this was one of his favorite lines. Nice work Lucas...
"I love you..."

"I know..."

not sure where you've been looking, but this change has been discussed in quite some length already in other threads in this forum

Is it me, or am I the only one who prefers "you're lucky to get out of there"? I mean, there was no need for Luke to go joking around on other robot's misery.

Lighten up Ric! you can tell political correctness has gone totally out of control when people are worried about the feelings of fictional robots! LMAO

what next? maybe Leia should have been a bit more sensitive when she said 'can someone get this big walking carpet out of my way!' Wookiee's have feelings too!

Well I'm almost sure there's a cut scene with Chewbacca hiding inside the milenium falcon's bathroom and crying alone.

But of course I was only joking, what I mean is that Luke didn't have to joke at the moment. It took the whole atmosphere for the scene.

I like Luke trying to make a joke. He's trying to make lemonade out of a lemon. It's not a real funny joke, but Luke is not a real funny guy.

I like the original line simply because it shows what a close relationship has been built between Luke and R2. Both have become very reliant on each other and the use of a more friendly and comforting "joke" to describe what almost happened shows how much Luke cares about R2. Instead of just pointing out, matter of factly, that he almost was recycle fodder, he tried to lighten the mood and calm the droid down a bit.

It's like what parents do after a child has a nightmare (maybe it was just my parents)... they try to lighten the mood to take your mind off of what you just dreamt about. I think it's a very applicable analogy here.

Now, I gotta admit that I would love to see a cut scene with Chewbacca crying on a shitter in the Falcon. Or, better yet, he gets so jostled and bent out of shape by something that happens that he curls into the fetal position on the cockpit floor of the Falcon much like Jim Bakker in the back seat of the car on the way to his trial.

Yeah, what he said...minus Chewbacca on the shitter.

Agreed. I always loved that line.

Thank God for this forum and DVD burners.

And I simply cannot wait for Magnoliafan, MeBeJedi and Rikter to get to work on that De-SEized DVD release!!! Please oh please.

My stance on revising fan edits.

"your lucky you don't taste good" was a cute throwaway line that got a little chuckle reaction, whereas the alternative is just a line of obvious dialogue, that doesn't get any sort of reaction.

"You're lucky you don't taste very good."

"You're lucky you got out of there."

I read somewhere that both lines were used in different versions of TESB prior to the Special Edition, so if true, I don't know which was used during the original theatrical run. The only way I ever heard it before the Special Edition was "don't taste very good."

This isn't necessarily an argument for original vs. modified; it's just my personal preference. And obviously, my personal preference does not jive with that of Lucas. R2 not tasting very good always worked for me. Never occurred to me that Luke was joking at R2's expense. Never occurred to me that there was anything wrong with it whatsoever, so I don't know why Lucas believed a change was needed. It was an effective line delivered well. "Got out of there" feels flat by comparison. Regardless of which line was originally intended, "don't taste very good" just works better. In my opinion.

OK here's my look on the scene: Luke is alone in Dagobah, crashed his ship into the swamp, dosen't know where Yoda is or even if there IS a Yoda - I mean, I surely wouldn't be in the mood for some corny jokes at such a tense time. If my droid feel into the swamp, eaten by a pseudo-monster thing, and gets spit out, I'd not make a joke-y reference to it. As I see it, the "don't tase very good" line ruins the whole psychological mood for the scene, adding an unnecessary and distracting comic releaf to that moment. But hey, that's how I feel about it, I'm sure you guys have your reasons for prefering the "taste so good" line.

ric, have you been uncomfortable with that line all along? Or do you feel that way now when you compare it to the new line? I'm just curious. Not arguing the point. Though I do disagree with your reasoning. I think I WOULD be inclined to seek a little levity in a situation like that, if for no other reason than to just counter the seeming hopelessness of it. But that's me.

Blasphemer! Star Wars must be analyzed line-by-line and frame-by-frame at all times!

BTW, I prefer the line

OK maaaaybe I'm overreacting

But the thing is: I had a copy (well... uh actually a copy of a copy, shhhh!) of the 1995 release and I have the SEs taped from the TV, and on the O-OT he says "lucky to get out of there", and on the SEs he says the last, and back then I didn't know about different audio tracks, and I thought it was something they've changed on the SEs. See, that's why I hate it, pretty much the same way I hate Greedo shooting first.

Good enough reason.
