King Kong vs. Godzilla - Japanese Version Restoration Project (Released)

I’m working on a restoration of the Japanese version of this film.

I am using a copy of the Champion Matsuri re-release and the Universal DVD of the John Beck edit for the majority of the duration and the Region 2 DVD for the 9 minutes not present in either version (here are those 9 minutes in particular: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OSl3skZdXs).. “www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OSl3skZdXs).”)

If you can help at all, please leave me a PM.

The picture portion of this restoration has been completed. All of the Matsuri footage has been color corrected to match the Universal DVD and, on the whole, everything looks very nice, sans the R2 segments. This may be the most consistently good-looking copy of the uncut film since 1962.

Now, the sound and subtitles must be synced up. Could anybody help me with the latter?

Huh, I had no idea this had been re-edited. The only version of it I've seen is a VHS I bought back in the '90's. I hope you find someone who can help you finish this, I'd love to check it out.

Any updates on this one?  I'm a monster movie fan from way back and would love to see this come to fruition.

I hope all is going well with it.

I was pretty sure that by now there was a Japan Blu ray.

Am i wrong?

No, and I don't believe Toho intends to release any more of their monster film Blu-Rays for some time, unless the release of this new film changes that. The idea of them releasing their 2008 1080p restoration with the same shitty LD master footage for the missing 24 minutes makes me laugh. If the 16mm footage is not rescanned or an alternative 35mm source not is found for the missing 9 minutes, that's how those scenes are going to look for the foreseeable future.

And BoxMonster's restoration is up on MySpleen and CGN.

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.

I think they did restore the film for Blu-Ray:

From reading the Wikipedia page, Toho took the 1080p version of the English version of KK vs G, took the parts the English copy had that the Japanese copy needed, and only used the 16mm for the few minutes neither version has.

I just got the Japanese version, so I'll let you know how it looks when I watch it.

PS: it was the Japanese version's director who cut the film and threw out the missing portions, not the makers of the U.S. Version.

I just watched it. Unless I missed anything, there were about, maybe, 5-7 minutes of the film that came from an SD source. It's noticeable but I can't say whether you could see it if you didn't know about the film's restoration problems because I definitely knew about them. The SD bits mixed OK with the rest. Not as well as Sins of the Father on the TNG sampler Blu-Ray but better than Metropolis (keep in mind, Metropolis had to use text cards for some scenes).

All in all, fairly decent. The true HD footage was beautiful although a few shots weren't so good (but they were visual effects shots, which rarely look good on Blu if made before the 70s-90s). It was also a fun film. If you're not bothered by no subtitles and can afford a Japanese Blu-Ray, I highly recommend this disc for Godzilla fans.

how did the King Kong V Godzilla restoration go? I know it’s probably been a while for you but I’m curious to see it.
