I feel like I've stumbled into a world where people have radically different definitions for certain terms. And I live in Ottawa, where our "Bluesfest" music festival is being headlined by Kanye West.

We may also have a few more surprises up our sleeve, but you'll have to wait and see how that goes when the time comes.

I kind of miss seeing the cigarette burns in movies nowadays. I know it's completely out of nostalgia, but at the same time their presence will be a reminder that what you're watching is totally authentic.

Author

It definitely does look good and, yes, authentic for now. A great step forward for the preservation community.

Apparently reel change markers are a huge dealbreaker for this guy.

Two days after release, "The Proper Restoration: Die Rebel Scum Cig Burns" fan edit is goes online and he poos himself.

 For the most part, I miss that our "second run" theatre doesn't run film anymore, but on a positive note, since they switched over, I haven't seen one movie where the projectionist had the screen out-of-focus.

I'm really sorry if I gave the impression I'm ticked off or ungrateful. I was confused, and should have read through this thread better. When all is said and done, Team Negative 1 will have achieved what most Star Wars fans have hoped would happen since George Lucas claimed the theatrical cuts had been effectively taped over. It'll take longer to get there than I originally thought, but holy crap it's almost a reality.

Like, when you think about the notoriety of the Special Editions and Lucas' determination to keep the previous versions out of public consumption, this restoration is one of the most important in cinematic history, and entirely fan-made to boot. The only thing that could top it is if, against all odds and recorded knowledge, someone pieced together the original cut of The Magnificent Ambersons.

Will the finished product have the Team Negative1 intro piece with the reels and the title of the movie like the ESB Grindhouse did? I don't know if this has been asked before but I can't seem to find an answer in either thread.

No, there will not be an intro to the main movie. There will be some trailers as an extra.

Feel free to add whatever intro's and other parts to it, if you prefer that.

Here is an additional short clip, continuing from the previous one near the end of Reel 1.

NOTE : Again, this is a temporary test clip.

No stabilization, or cropping has been done on it,

at some point a Deflicker effect will be applied to it also:

We will be posting some comparison clips shortly.

It also looks like you've done some colour correcting, yes? Unless that print was already in good shape to begin with. Looks good either way.

Author

There is some minor contrast adjustment done to the clip, but no color correction has been made to it.

What is that long rectangle at the bottom of the untouched frame? All dirt?

The scene changes occur on what are called glue frames or splices.

"Strips of footage would be hand cut and attached together with tape and then later in time, glue"

So it is glue, and partially at times, part of the next frame.

After each one, the next scene change would be spliced to it, in this case, the next shot is this:

===================================

A cleaned up version:

================

Alternate frame:

==============

So just think about how this cleanup has to be done, at times after every scene. That is why cropping it off, will be the best way to preserve the original shot.

That first comparison looks great though it looks like a bright star in the left corner has gone missing during the clean up. What steps are you taking to make sure the starfields remain intact?

I think it's worth noting that these "after" pictures are smaller and much more compressed than the "befores" so some of those stars are probably made invisible from the lossiness. But that is an intriguing question.

Those are work in progress shots. Also, all the starfield shots will have alternate replacements from better sources.

We'll post some samples.

when it does get release please try not to crop it that much and thank you.

looking for HDTV of the  Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.  Also HDTV of The Lord of the Rings trilogy

So looking at the first post and another one that's linked to in the first post, reference is made to using the following as the audio mixes:

  • (partially restored) mono mix
  • 35mm theatrical [presumably the stereo mix]
  • 35mm Spanish theatrical
  • 70mm theatrical (recreation)

I don't know if anything's changed for these but if not, my question is: For these tracks, are you using the ones made by users like hairy_hen and belbucus? I just wonder what the post means by "partially restored" and "recreation."

Author

The sound mixes have changed.

----

1) We are restoring a full mono mix. Although parts are from a lesser quality print, it will still be better than the current one.

2) The Theatrical mixes will be as stated.

We are not sure about 70mm recreation, because we haven't gotten that far yet.

Be careful guys with clipping the blacks. You are crushing shadow detail a little bit. Great work as usual though and thanks for doing this.

We have a long way to go on some of these shots. In fact we are working on better replacement ones for those, so there won't be any problems.

Here is a comparison of the original Head of Reel 6, and the cleanup. Ignore the color change, as that will be corrected later on

I have a question. Do you think it might be useful to apply super resolution to the cleaned 35 mm preservation? It might be able to undo some of the degradation of the 35 mm film, once digitized and cleaned. The super resolution script I wrote is able to recover a good amount of detail from the GOUT, which has a lot of problems. From what I've seen so far, your preservation is going to be so much better.
