team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released) — Page 66

We are adding another computer to our rendering group today. We will be having some very interesting updates in the upcoming days.

Just to reiterate.

1) We will probably have a pre-release just for members of the blog, and to those that donated in the past.

2) Our work will always be free, and not kept just for the private use of individuals.

3) We are not concerned with any future Disney release or supposed 4k version, as we have a vote of no confidence on any future releases from them.

4) We are not worried about copies of the release being suppressed or held up, as multiple copies will exist, and multiple methods for distribution will be used.

We look forward to the future, and the New Hope we have for preserving this and the rest of the original trilogy.

Speaking of "New Hope", will a version of the film with the '81 crawl be released?

We have high resolution scans of the 81 crawl. That might be an extra to the main film.

Disney has proven unreliable, and a no-show for proper restorations. We don't even consider them a factor whether they release a 4k version or not.

If you could pull off alternate branching for that in a bluray version, that would be awesome.

I believe you said the grindhouse-first release was only for Empire, correct? So your version of Star Wars will be more conventionally restored?

Is this in reference to the old blog, or is there another one I'm not familiar with?

Was wondering the very same thing.

The last blog/site that was active is what we meant. We have your usernames and emails. If they've changed and we get no response, you may want to send us an update when we mention we are ready.

I'm really pumped for this. I love Harmy's Despecialized to death--it helped get me back into Star Wars--but I yearn to see all the original compositing and the proper grain. I never thought I'd prefer the old, translucent and kind of flat compositing but it's kind of endearing now.

In complete agreement. The 35mm Grindhouse of Empire is my 'goto' version now, and I'm very excited about the prospect of a similar release of Star Wars :)

I was going to say I've been watching the Grindhouse of Empire a lot recently, and for all of the red and dirt/scratches (which will eventually be remedied anyway) it's an incredibly authentic experience.

Grindhouse Starwars...good idea

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

Properly scanned in 4K and cleaned up, what level of detail to these prints resolve to? DVD? Somewhere between DVD and Blu Ray? You've said that only by scanning from the negative could you get Blu Ray quality, but I figure the detail is still substantial.

EDIT: also, are you still keeping the reel change marks? Please say you're not.

Really good 35mm stock has about a resolution of 6K. I'm not 100% certain what resolution a release print would have, but best guess is much less. Besides an overall softness, however, you can get Blu Ray quality material from a properly scanned and restored release print, assuming it's a good print (see mverta's SW Legacy).

Yeah, I'm looking at the restored 35mm shot of Lando from Harmy's Empire Despecialized 2.0 and it might as well be Blu Ray. Thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah. 35mm prints were designed to be projected on massive cinema screens!

So while a release print is not a good as the original camera negative, it is still more than enough for most purposes.

Mhmm. The grindhouse release of Empire has gotten me super-interested in all things 35mm. Even with the corrected colours and reintroduced grain of Despecialized, it still has a different look from 35mm (not at all to abase what Harmy has done; the Despecialized editions are monumentally important).

Between The Force Awakens, Battlefront and these 35mm preservation releases, 2015 is going to be a fantastic year for Star Wars, perhaps the best since 1997.

Here is the last current state of the project:

We are not collaborating with anyone else on this project. It is mostly self sourced using prints that we have obtained or borrowed.

All the original elements, like reel change marks, and other artifacts will be left in.

Oh. Well, shoot. I appreciate all your work, but I guess I'm going to have to wait on a proper restoration, aren't I.

EDIT: I truly mean no disrepect. I guess I didn't properly mentally differentiate between "preservation" and "restoration."

Here is a sample from Reel 1 to give you an idea:

There are plenty more video samples under from us there.

We are doing dust/dirt cleanup, cropping, stabilization and other repairs. There will also be major color correction done to the scenes along with flicker removal.

We are not enhancing the originals or introducing new elements that were not there. Finally, we are not over-enhancing the images or videos.

I see. Well that's fine enough quality to tide me over you or someone else actually restores it.

....you have odd ideas about what a restoration is. Every version of the originals you've ever seen has had the reel change marks. They were on all prints. They're part of the film.
