I'm a little confused as to how they are going to make it look like stuff happened over the last 30 years, and yet not feel sad because the ST didn't come in the late 80's when it should have.

 The crawl!

Anyone considered a civil war within the Empire with a New Order taking control while a Sith led Empire still exists? It could be why we see the chaos in that shot where it looks like troopers are fighting troopers.

I think we're seeing John Boyega's Stormtrooper character fleeing his situation in that TIE Fighter in that scene. For better or worse that scene may harken back to Episode I where young Anakin is learning how to pilot a starfighter on the fly.

I don't think we'll be seeing anything about fighting within the First Order/Empire other than that scene in these sequels.

Where would the "sith" even come from if both Palpatine and Vader are dead, and there is that stupid rule of two from the prequels?

Yes, the crawl can fiix the time between.

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

Well, I heard my friends really got in a mess
So I'm gonna have to leave Yoda I guess
But I know that I'll be coming back some day
I'll be playing this part 'till I'm old and gray

Yeah, the poor joke have finally become reality.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

That would jive with the rumor her character lives in a wrecked Imperial Walker.

 And the concept art, too.

GONK!!!

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I'm reassured by the replies about the galactic situation - i.e. that rumours suggest my fears were unfounded. I feel a lot better about the whole endeavour now, but I'm still not too enamoured of seeing an ageing Han gallivanting about. However, for some reason the spin-off films seem a lot more promising to me.

Dunno if this has already been brought up or not, pretty big thread.

The costuming reminds me of medieval Europe (Kylo looks very monk-like, the hilt swings him closer to feudal knight and away from feudal samurai). This makes me think the story draws from post-roman empire history for inspiration of what happened over the last 30 years. The first order may be more of a sith-based religious group, and they are in the middle of their own crusade for sith/jedi artifacts like Luke's lightsaber and Vaders helmet.

Although I do think that is Luke in the trailer looking at his fathers helmet, but that's just a hunch.

I'm not sure if that's the case. The teasers and leaked concept art don't show evidence of this.  I imagine they would have more guys with red lightsabers than stormtroopers.

One possibility that hasn't been entertained much is the First Order could be the former Rebels (they won the war and got all the Imperial kit which they have continued to finesse).

And the Resistance are the remains of the Empire.

They were thoroughly defeated and have turned to using the tools of their conquerors (X-Wings etc).

Not saying this is what's happening at all just pushing it as another serving suggestion.

The Republic had trooper armour like the Imperials so the Alliance in displacing the Imperials they may have reverted back to controlling the Galaxy with white plastic ground troops.

Maybe the price of victory was to become the enemy.

A question y'all. I instantly assumed the Falcon is flying into the engines of that wrecked Stardestroyer. Is that correct? Because I've read people elsewhere saying it's not?

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

It looked like a wrecked Super Stardestroyer to me. The regular SD seen in the opening shot wasn't upside down, and it's bridge tower was intact.
