The Knick Knack Boobs Restoration

.

Feminist-aliens from warped-space-time have invaded our planet to have their foul way with Earth's ... women's ... boobs ..

Who will save our chicks?

"Don't worry about it, saving chicks is what I'm all about!" -Duke Nukem: Zero Hour

Holster that freezerthrower, Duke. Science & Commerce are taking care of this one:

"Put the smile back on Sunny Miami's face with our new, patented Boobs Restoration Therapy® -- guaranteed! or your money back." ..

So ... "Let's rock!"

.

Back in fun-loving 1989, an incredible short film entitled Knick Knack was created by John Lasseter and his crew of Pixar. It was state-of-the-art 3-dimensional computer-generated animation, it had boobs, and it was good. Fast forward to the darker days of 2003 and the now married-with-daughter Lasseter was hit with pangs of feminist madness and took a digital knife to his feminine knick knack creations.

Lasseter claimed Disney did not force him to it, that it was his own choice ..

John Lasseter said [Pixar Talk - Knick Knack]:

"It was just crossing the line for me personally as a father, so I made the decision to reduce breast size"

In animation no one can hear them scream.
So steel yourselves, oh my brothers, and gaze upon the pix'ly deed he left behind   ..

.

I have worked up a proof-of-concept procedure in a paint program. To do an entire project this way would be tedious and time consuming, to say the least. Note that even though less-than-ideal YouTube sources were used for this test, it looks quite good.

To start, get 1989 and 2003+ sources of Knick Knack (older VHS & DVD videos from YouTube here) ..

VHS [noisy & blurry]                                                        DVD [clean & sharp]

The smaller 1989 source is resized and repositioned to the 2003+ source. Note that the 2003+ was recreated from the existing files from their old system and software. They had to remake the video, with the altered female models, using decade-newer resources. In to-to, everything is not exactly aligned. So, only the female knick knacks need be targeted for exact resize and reposition ..

Next, the boobs, along with some of the torso area, are isolated from the 1989 source. By checking the mask (here outlined) against the 2003+ source, any extra area needing to be overlaid can be revealed ..

This critical 1989 area is then embedded into the 2003+ update and we see things starting to take shape    ..

Finally, the original 1989 source is matched (de-noise, sharpen, edge clarify, color correct) to it's superior-quality 2003+ update ..

"And here we have another satisfied customer!"      "Be sure to recommend us to your friend, Sunny Atlantis the mermaid!"

For the actual boobs restoration, the best 1989 release (laserdisc) and the best 2003+ release (Blu-ray) should be used to produce a superior hi-def restoration. This might require specialized (read "expensive") software to (semi?)automate the resize and align of the two sources, edge detect and isolate the original breasts/torso for overlay, and the seamless blending for a finished production.

Recommendations anyone? Better yet, can anyone actually do this?

Another pass at YouTube shows better posted sources than the ones I previously found.

.

For the 1989 original version, postings are difficult due to the obsolete consumer formats and the analog-to-digital conversion required. This one boasts "AC3 Audio". It may be from laserdisc, but the picture appears to waiver, like videotape but without the telltale tearing at picture bottom. Anyway, it's the best I've seen online so far ..

YouTube:

.

For the 2003 revised version, the next posting is an easy one because of it's digital media release, which makes for easy extraction at full quality (HD in this case) ..

YouTube:

                    PIXAR'S KNICK KNACK - 1080p

.

And there are commentaries! One is of John Lasseter and Eben Ostby talking about their original release in 3D  (but I haven't seen that one online yet). That one would be very nice ... to see . [EDIT: found it]

YouTube:

Pixar Short Films Collection Vol. 1- Audio Commentaries [AUDIO]
                  [Knick Knack @ 12m50s to 16m19s]

.

The other commentary is Lasseter and Ostby talking about the short's inspiration from snow domes ..

These are great sources to get organized and even set up a repeatable run. Thereafter, the original, best captures could be plugged in for the best restoration.

Altering any cinema history is bad, not just when it's done to Star Wars. It's the principle of the thing.

If Lasseter had made changes to Toy Story years later, we'd all be cursing about it. How is this any less egregious than Disney erasing cigarette smoking from it's classics?

But yeah, boobies, so get it out of your system.

I guess.  As a father of two daughters myself, I completely get where he was coming from, and why anyone would feel the need to watch the insane original version is beyond me.

Spaced Ranger, I'm not sure if I support your little...lhgsdahjeowp, but you forgot to mention the mermaid's boobs.

*boobs and shrinkage*

...that might have been the most vulgar thing I will ever post, ever.

Thank you, thank you!  :D

Of course, mermaid Sunny Atlantis would be restored to her previous allure as well. My demonstration on Sunny Miami was just a (successful) proof-of-concept, and when you've seen one set of boobs restored, you've seen them all.

...a rare sentence. Let us never hear it again, in any context.

I don't see the issue here. The original is no longer available, and so Spaced Ranger is creating the best reconstruction we can get of it.

I agree completely.  A far bigger fus was made to restore a poster in a Rogger Rabbit short than this.  With a bit of trickery this corrected short could be reinserted onto the pixar shorts Blu Ray was a well.  I found the write up pretty entertaining also.  Keep doing your thing OP.

But why would you want it?

Wanting it jusrt because it disappeared seems like a weird reason, despite the end mission of this site.  Comparing the loss of ridiculous cartoon boobs to the loss of Star Wars is crazy talk.

I think you're all misinterpreting the thread a little.  Spaced Ranger obviously upped his rhetoric and distaste for the change for laughs.

Anyway, this is a neat tutorial and I definitely think - in both cases, ironically - Lasseter went overboard.

Because I'm weird in that when I watch something, I want to watch what was originally shown. Call me a purist, call me crazy, but I really don't like any changes, even minor ones.

You'll get no argument from me in this case.  Wanting to watch this is weird.

BTW, my previous post was meant generally (I should've prefaced it "@ all").  ;)

.

I've been looking for direct sources of the original Knick Knack since it's 1989 premiere. Here's the results so far:

The best would be the original film, but there seems to be no further info on the 3D version or even a standard 2D version (16mm? 35mm? 65mm?). Leads on this, anyone?

.

Next best are the laserdiscs. There are more than one containing Knick Knack ..

Toy Story Deluxe CAV Laserdisc     Toy Story Deluxe CAV/CLV LD JP    Tiny Toy Stories CLV Laserdisc JP

.

At lesser quality, there are the VHS releases ..

   P·I·X·A·R "L.R.T.K." VHS (1991)        Tiny Toy Stories VHS (1996)

.

With those sources being analog media, how can we be sure of Knick Knack's original color? We needn't guess. Fragments of it (as short as 1 frame) made it over to DVD and Blu-ray (for best resolution), under the umbrella of ...

Toy Story 2 Special Edition Blu-ray

With the assistance of a certain piggy bank doing some serious channel surfing, it happens at 18 minutes 54 seconds into the movie. Here that video segment ..

Toy Story 2 - Let me take the wheel (HD clip)

Not fast enough to keep up with a pig?   Here it is in ... very ... slow ... motion ..

This last find is particularly helpful to bring the original color over to the 2003+ update and make this a full Knick Knack Restoration!

The first few seconds are completely different (starts with old pixar logo, then goes into knick knack opening credits. The new version starts with the "...before toy story..." note, than a short version of the current pixar logo with accompanying noise, then goes into knick knack opening credits ), and the ending credits had mild changes (2003 copyright, reference to rerendering...) Other than that and everything else mentioned (boobs and colors), nothing changed.

This is the GHOOOOST of Spaced Ranger ...    ... he died of shock upon seeing that eBay listing!  OOo-ooo-ooooo!

[edit] Fortunately I got better and now I'm back ... "havin' fun as usual"!

Those kind of things happen to me. In this case, I was looking around for pictures to post for Knick Knack's previous releases when I came across an eBay listing for a "trailer".  (Yep, SilverWook, your mention above.) As I was busy I almost moved on but thought "what the heck" and took a look at "35mm Film Trailer Walt Disney Pixar KNICK KNACK Cartoon 3:31 Flat". I think what killed me was the seller describing it as "This is the complete cartoon, not just the trailer!". The room spun around me and then everything ... went ... dark ...

Then I found myself scrutinizing the picture ..

.. and that label ..

KNICK KNACK
PIXAR/'89-'03rr/3:31/FLAT

It meant "original 1989 - 2003 re-release".

Oh. False alarm. And just when I thought I finally had "all the time in the world"<--[must be read with Scottish accent] ...
