Star Wars GOUT in HD using super resolution algorithm (* unfinished project *) — Page 11

Question about the super resolution algorithm, does it require that the source originally came from something sufficiently high resolution, or can it work for things like home movies that were filmed directly on vhs tape?

I dunno.  It would have to be time base corrected to even have a chance, I think.

It works with every source, but of course final result will vary... better input, better output!

This is getting better and better, one might suspect you're using a real HD transfer, haha ;)

Regarding this comparison http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/122417 super resolution seems to have more detail which goes with more noise, but MU handles edges with aliasing and artifacts better (right edge of chinstrap seems to be a haloing artifacts, but I might be wrong).

And while we’re at it, we need to figure out why they kept calling Mark Hamill’s character “Luke Skywalker,” since it’s my subjective opinion that his name is actually Schnarzle Shnuzzle.  It just doesn’t make sense!

Damn you George Lucas for never explaining why they all keep calling Schnarzle “Luke”!

Damn You!!!

@Intruder

Yep, your right. SR brings out more detail, but will also "enhance" the noise and bad aliasing. MU handles the noise surprisingly well, but looses enough detail to notice.

Its down to peoples personal preferences now. But its awesome to have both to people will have a choice. But there are defects inherent to the GOUT that will never be fixed.

All you guys have done incredible work! You have given life to the GOUT I never thought possible.

Thanks!

Here you are my latest test; I refined further the MagicUp upscale, using Super Resolution technique alone, with a more precise math calculation; result was a bit too rough for my tastes, so I added the BasiClean denoiser after that, plus the grain plate, that helps a bit...

SuperResolution V4 Vs MagicUpSR3 + BasiClean + GrainPlate:

MagicUpSR2 Vs MagicUpSR3 + BasiClean + GrainPlate:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/122584

now there are more details, but more aliasing as well... nevertheless, a huge improvement over the "basic" bicubic resize:

Latest test est! (^^,)

MagicUpSR3 + BasiClean + GrainPlate Vs MagicUpSR3 refined + GrainPlate:

I don't think I could do better than this with actual techniques... unless someone could port/convert some new ones to avisynth, like:

or the one previously posted by happycube

Again it is stunning to see the comparison with bicubic resize, haven't seen it for a while ;)

Your latest test 122645 has even more detail but also more noise, and take a look at the gun's "sights" - the bead - it gets a bit deformed. This has happened in other results aswell, but here it is stronger. I would like to see other frames of MagicUpSR3 refined + GrainPlate, could you please post more maybe?

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Sorry, I cannot give you the exact frame numbers as I do not have the NTSC GOUT. Preferrably somewhere near these two frames that we have already seen: this and this. And maybe another one that we have not seen, but two is already enough, thanks :)

Here's super resolution v5. It maintains the enhanced detail of v4, while the noise compared to the source is significantly reduced. This is the best that I can do. Here are the same 8 screenshot comparisons:

@ stretch009

Yes, this will be the final version, and it should be ready for release in a few days.

Awesome.  Without reading the whole thread how would you compare it to TeamBlu's version?

@ stretch009

I've only seen screenshots of TeamBlu's version, but I'm pretty sure this release is far more detailed, and can really be seen as the first true high definition GOUT sourced release. TeamBlu of course did much more to restore the GOUT in many other respects though, fixing many of the GOUT's flaws. I suppose this release could serve as a starting point for someone else's restoration project. But this is where I'm going to leave it.

I'm hoping that within a week or two we'll have the release of the Star Wars Trilogy - The Super Resolution Edition... ;-)

@ DrDre

Those screenshots do look great I have to say.  One quick question though, what are you going to do about the subtitles for Greedo in SW and Jabba in ROTJ?  I'm hoping they will be hard-coded with a font similar to past projects here.

@ stretch009

If somebody can tell me how to add those subtitles in Avisynth I would be more than happy to put them in.

That's a good suggestion... :-)
