THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released) — Page 80

The print I saw had the modern WB logo on it.

The '99 DVD mono is very low fi. Worse still, the Making Of doc was transferred from a poor videotape source, and there are tracking errors throughout. All the early Warner Kubrick DVD's were a rush job in the wake of his passing.

Regarding the open matte transfers, was checking out the original trailer and discovered its framing is the most open.

Theatrical Trailer

Compare it with the frames seen here: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompare/shining.htm

Nothing unusual but fun seeing how different the cropping is between transfers. By the look of it, it seems they did a stellar job in 2007.

Sorry, is this the THX thread? A little Shining cannot hurt, all work and no play... ;)

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Has there been any good efforts to preserv these two classics in their original form? if so,
could someone please point me in the right direction. I am dying to see them again and
I've searched everywhere with no luck. :( Have them on VHS of course but the quality is
so bad you cannot watch them anymore and I thought there must've been some LD to
DVD preservation done to them and was chocked that I couldn't find any. Any help would
                                 be much appreciated, thanks.

LOL   I know it's been a lo-o-ong time!   :D

Kubrick liked THX. Star Wars too. ;)

We could start a Shining thread to gauge interest in a color corrected tennis ball/original mono/correct WB logo project?

That is telling about both Kubrick and Lucas. We expect professionals to admire their betters, but are surprised learn the other way around.

A search for "kubrick" "lucas" "admire" (in any order) brings up hits on ... Stanley Kubrick.

“If I made as much money as George Lucas, I would not decide to become a studio mogul. I cannot understand why he doesn’t want to direct films anymore, because American Graffiti and even Star Wars were very good.” -Stanley Kubrick, IMDb - Stanley Kubrick's All Time Favorite Films

Lucas describes 2001: A Space Odyssey as "hugely inspirational" and Stanley Kubrick as "the filmmaker's filmmaker". (Wikipedia: 2001: A Space Odyssey (film) )

Even they know who is who ...

Sorry to jump in here, I did notice this thread a while a go and I do really like THX1138.

I saw it originally on VHS oh back in the 90's..

I bought the directors cut DVD and Have to say I really enjoyed it... It is a much better special edition than the star wars films In my opinion and has some great extra features. Although I admit I cannot remember the theatrical cut which I saw very well

But what I am most interested in is this opening Narration and any other "Big" differences between versions comparable to the directors cut. But I am talking outside of movie censorship.com comparisons.

Is there a streaming link to this alternate opening sequence?

I have to say I also prefer the original Theatrical ending credits of course too but I am mostly curious about different scenes in different versions to be honest.

Never mind I found the link to the iIalien opening... Is there an English version though????

Ha-ha.. Yeah, at one point I felt the LD project stole a lot of my time and yours completely in vain but looking at it on the bright side we've learned a lot of things about this film along the way since then. Just remember that the true warrior of this thread is the silver haired wookie who have captured laserdiscs, videotapes, shipped his personal print for transfer and bought a vintage film print in hope and in order to make some sense of this mess. Good things come to those who wait... I know Antcufaalb will do a great job on the laser and it will be awesome to see what Poita's magic will bring us. :)

Yes, Star Wars the film, everyone did except Lucas himself. Also, one minor similarity between THX 1138 and The Shining are the opening titles which are highly unusual in the way that they are scrolling upwards in the frame. I actually cannot recall another movie offhand that did that before THX.

Speaking of the titles, I can't believe I hadn't noticed it before, but I just discovered that the opening credits on the 2001 DVD of The Shining are different from other transfers, I know the end titles were blue colored on the first home video release, but the 2001 DVD opening credits also seems to have been made specifically for home video, they are smaller than the theatrical and contains a dark blue drop shadow. The visible dirt and grain makes me believe they were also optically made. The '99 DVD and nineties LD did apparently contain the theatrical titles from what I understand. Please confirm if you're able to SilverWook.

Not a bad idea. The vintage WB logo would be a nice touch but in my opinion it's not a deal breaker like the audio and color screw up. In THX the WB logo is at least part of the film.

Personally, I still think Lucas was a brilliant director and filmmaker (with the emphasis on was) despite the clusterfuck we've since been presented with. I have still not to this day seen his last two SW-movies in full, only short segments here and there and they actually seem to be worse than his previous one. I didn't know what to think back in '97 other than disappointment, in '99 it was like a sledgehammer hit the skull - there was a studio mogul behind the wheels and not a director.

The opening narration of the Italian TV-broadcast is a foreign distributor thing. I uploaded a dvd of THXita's avi a few years ago along with english subtitles to Myspleen, don't know if it's still there. Plan to make another version with some calibration applied... I have no idea what you are referring to in regards to "original Theatrical ending credits."

Aw, you guys. :) *blush*

THX certainly has turned into this rabbit hole we've not seen the bottom of yet.

The 80's Japanese LD of The Shining had the blue closing credits too. (I don't have it anymore, but I might still have a capture of it lying around.) I think it somehow slipped by Stanley in those early days of home video. He certainly didn't sign off on the blurring of Ms. 237's nether regions. If you've ever seen the tv version she's surrounded by fog, (which apparently was SK approved) which makes the scene even more creepy in a way.

I don't know if the version that runs on AMC these days is like the ABC tv cut. I tried once or twice to snag a vintage betamax of the ABC broadcast on Ebay, but struck out.

I wish I could recall how THX was censored when I first saw it on tv in the late 70's. Certainly all that illegal sexual activity had to go. ;)

I prefer the credit sequence in the Pal VHS Version I saw and the court room scene the music is screwed up in the directors cut and the pacing... Although I do really like the Directors cut for many reasons but I would also like a bit more of the gritty footage put back. I'd be interested in seeing a hybrid cut If that makes any sense.

Have you got your hands on a Theatrical print?

Don't quote me but I have a feeling that the credit sequence just looking better in the version I saw.. I know it's different between versions but I am wondering.... I just can't remember Sorry.

Is it possible the new OT twitter account could be used to (nicely) attempt to get a clear answer from Warner Archive about the status of the original version of THX (the rights and actual film elements)? They seem pretty accessible these days. thanks!

I asked them last year, and never got a reply. :(

My (delayed) thought here is that George Lucas is a one note filmmaker. And that's not bad. John Wayne was a one note actor -- he played "John Wayne" in all his flicks. Everyone loved it and couldn't wait to see him play "John Wayne", again, in his next one.

Lucas' few, early films, which came from his gut, are great and uniquely from his perspective (keeping in mind the collaborative effort of film-making). Those were all his gut had; he has nothing more to say. For example, each Star Wars "sequel" was the same movie -- how many times must we see yet another Deathstar or [fill-in-the-blank] explode before we say "we've been here before"? It's the reason why he keeps "tinkering" with his old movies (to their detriment). He literally has nothing else:

"Lucas still talks incessantly about the Star Wars franchise despite his relatively hands-off role in the upcoming films which are now being overseen by Disney" -David Oyelowo, My great friendship with George Lucas by British actor David Oyelowo

.

Speaking of getting back to those great, original movies ... I haven't heard back from Antcufaalb and his THX 1138 laserdisc captures. Does anyone know if his instances of every-significant-shot-change SeriouslyScrewedUp3D CF were more prevalent than first thought?  .. Sorry for even my suggesting super-saturation to check for more of that ..  :O  ..

So I was checking out THX 1138 on iTunes and found two versions of the film, which may be old news but I thought the details were interesting:

THX 1138 Director's Cut (HD)- released 2004 - runtime 1hr 28min

THX 1138 (SD) - released 1971 - runtime 1hr 24min

Link to images:

I don't mind spending the $3 to rent the latter version to confirm whether or not it is the original version.

I have the funny feeling this has come up before. It would be bizarre if the original version was on there after all the hassle we've gone through.

I say go for it. I'm sure we can pool our resources to reimburse you if it's a dead end. :)

Well, based on how horrible Black Angel looks on iTunes (and that is HD), I'd say that even if it is the original, your LD rips may still look better.

Sorry to hear you found out the hard way, THX11384EB. It was debunked a few years ago.

I definitely think Baronlando's suggestion might be worth another try despite its hopelessness.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

LD: I've spent the past few weeks writing a 3D comb filter for Avisynth in C. I'm getting good results, but I took a look at a different spatial-only approach (basically low pass filtering chroma to a particular frequency) and it does a much better job. I'll post some samples in a bit with pros and cons as well as an explanation as to why it works so well.

16mm: At least 2-3 shots were messed up by a scanning defect, so poita is going to give it a rescan soon. My project today is to just dump what we have (warts and all) in order to share and give you all the ability to start analyzing it.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!
