Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 104

Sure it is going to be available in 2D, if you don't mind travelling half an hour outside the city centre a week after the premiere to sit in a small shoe-box paying a premium to get a theatre experience that is no better than what you could get with BluRay at home once the disc has been released.

Seeing the movie on opening night with fellow Star Wars fans is important. There is the line, and the pre-party, and the activities before the theatre doors opens at midnight. Only real Star Wars fans go to see it at that time ... And then: "Here, let's put these goggles on you so you can't see the movie properly. You will hear the movie but left eye's image is blended into the image for the the right eye and vice versa and things seem to be at different depths but you can't focus so you get eye-strain and a head-ache, and your friend who doesn't have 20-20 vision like you can only see the movie with his left eye.".

I have yet to see a major release in a multiplex where there wasn't at least one auditorium with a 2D presentation offered. Your mileage may vary.

You need to move to a bigger city.

Sure, but I'm already living in the biggest city in Northern Europe already.

But, also, it wasn't supposed to be this way. The movie was going to be shot on film stock - the traditional way. Never has there been any talk about 3D until they stuck it in at the end of the second teaser trailer. This was underhanded. This is betrayal.

Saw the trailer.

I'm starting to believe the speculation that Luke is that cyborg with the dark cloak holding Vader's helmet from the leaked production pictures.

When it shows R2 and what is presumably Luke in the new trailer you see that very robotic hand. It fits for me.

You sure that's not Kylo Ren (leaked art)?

 1) You need to move to a different part of the world.

2) You're starting to sound like generalfrevious.

For the record I'm annoyed as well, but not "f*ck you" annoyed.  So much for seeing this at the theatre I've seen them all in... they'll definitely be doing 3D.

Conversions don't make as much money.  People seem to know the difference between native 3D and postproduction 3D.
I really hope the Village Theatre in Westwood has 2D showings, too.

The shot of the storm troopers all lined in front of the giant red flag was chilling. Granted, this is only a teaser, but it looks as if the film will be darker than I had previously expected from the first teaser.

That's a great shot.  It's very reminiscent of the opening of the first draft treatment of ANH where the emperor reviews the troops.

The only shot in the trailer I'm not sure what's going on is where the lightsaber is handed to the person on the left.  I'm thinking thats where the Rose character hands it to Rai but since all we have is hands to go on its hard to tell.

Yes, bad post conversions have hurt the market as a whole. Guardians of The Galaxy had pretty damn good 3D though.

I don't think the new jewel in Disney's crown is going to be a rush job.

It's Han passing Luke's old sabre to Leia. Check that thumb - that's a Harrison Ford carpenters special - not a woman's ;)

WHAT an amazing trailer! I'm stunned - feels like Star Wars is truly back again! Could JJ have actually knocked this one out of the park? Looks very promising!

Why would they go with 3D? I thought this lame gimmick dying down.

What happened to shooting on 35mm?

It's a conversion, they probably shot on film as promised and then decided in post they wanted to do this. :/

They did shoot on 35mm. Remember, a DI is created from the 35mm negative, which would then be converted to 3D.

Still a big "meh" for me, don't really feel anything with this trailer or the last one.

It kind of looks like SW but more like "i'm watching a Dark Forces 2 cutscene in HD" SW...

Am i the only one to feel like this?

That was pretty much my reaction.

Parts of it kind of look like Star Wars, and some of it even sounds a bit like Star Wars, but . . . there's just something missing.  The sense that it isn't going to be ridiculously overblown, maybe?

Actually, I got a more genuine sense of SW-ness from those DF2 cutscenes than I did from this.

And seriously, what the hell is going on with Chewie's face?

But converted 3D looks like crap. Why would they go this way? Attaching 3D buzzword to everything doesn't work anymore.

Umm, no one is being forced to see it in 3D.

Yeah, there is something off about the style and aesthetics of the movie. And Chewie looks younger. Babyface.

My personal problem with it being in 3d isn't a lack of 2D options in general, it is the potential for affecting premium showings. I want to see a 7 film marathon opening day. Sadly, chances are that those marathons only include what they feel is the best version- ultimately, probably giving us eps 1, 2, and maybe 3 in 3d, 4-6 in 2d, with 7 in 3d...

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

Maybe it's actually Lumpy in that scene, all grown up? ;)

 I definitely felt "meh"

The look of this sequel is so similar to the originals that I could have mistaken it for a reboot. Everything looks the same 30 years later in the Star Wars universe but with a CG sheen to it.

The only real difference is that the Empire stopped using TIE interceptors and inverted the colors of their old TIEs.

I see now.  Weird, never heard of that before.

Well I'd hope it to have a conversion as good as the Wizard Of Oz, but I kinda doubt...  That conversion was at least as good as native 3D, if not better.
