Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 103

Did anybody notice that when the garrulous dudebro moderator asked about the prequels (which happened at least once - a question about balancing the asthetics of the OT and the PT) Abrams steered the discussion back to the OT, and his love for its lived in look? He didn't even acknowledge the PT in passing, which I fully expected (something along the lines of "And because the prequels introduced some interesting new vistas and in the same universe, there will be a little of that" etc.) Nothing. Just praise for the OT.

Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted by that. And I know it might be seen as corporate pandering to a fanbase that overwhelmingly (and with good reason) favors the OT over the PT. But I still didn't expect it because I thought it'd be seen as an outright indictment of Lucas (who is still alive and, presumably, still on good terms with Lucasfilm).

If this attitude carries over into the ST (i.e. no references to anything PT-specific, midichlorians, gungans, clonetroopers, etc.) I will be even more (delightfully) stunned. And I will find myself holding on to hope for something I've hoped for since the Disney acquisition was first announced in 2012 - a remake of the Prequel trilogy.

...or was there actually a reference to the PT and I just missed it? In which case, well... move along... move along...

So, I lied.  A lot.

I can't stop thinking about this trailer.  I'm ready.  I'm more than ready.  I can't wait.

I'm crying right now. Seriously, that was beautiful, all of it. They nailed it. Seeing Han and Chewie at the end was like seeing long lost family again.

Sadly, I don't think under any circumstances, there would ever be a remake of the prequels. I wish there could be. Don't get me wrong.  But the only way the prequels would be redone, is if the whole episodes 1-9 were rebooted.  We'll much more likely see extended universe movies from now on.

By the way, I loved the trailer, especially the opening shot, and am glad they're still not showing too much.

There is no try.

Great trailer. Doesn't reveal much and gets a lot of people hyped.

The thing is, The Phantom Menace had a nice trailer too if I remember correctly.

BTW does this guy do anything besides breathing heavily?

100% no Jar-Jar.

Was there some reason to expect any percentage less?

I must confess I had to look up what garrulous means. It's not every day I learn a new word. Thanks! :)

Is there a video of the "panel" somewhere? Also, the teaser looks like Star Wars

Still a big "meh" for me, don't really feel anything with this trailer or the last one.

It kind of looks like SW but more like "i'm watching a Dark Forces 2 cutscene in HD" SW...

Am i the only one to feel like this?

Was the face of the person who handed the lightsaber to (presumably) Leia  shown?  I'm not able to freeze frame on the exact spot.

The shot of the stormtroopers at the rally... the robed person on the balcony far off in the background...

I've looked at that image close up for minutes on end and it reignites a theory I toyed with in my mind a year or so ago. If that person is who I vaguely suspect that person to be... then this film - this trilogy - has the potential to go into some very shocking, very dark, very disturbing places that would truly cement Star Wars as a "Saga" in the truest sense of that word...

 Who? Leia?

Trailer was beautiful. I'm nervously hopeful that they are hitting the sweet spot of an authentic yet modern Star Wars.

Whelmed...

TPM and Prometheus had great trailers.

I'm trying to not get too excited.

The shot of the storm troopers all lined in front of the giant red flag was chilling. Granted, this is only a teaser, but it looks as if the film will be darker than I had previously expected from the first teaser.

 Yeah, felt the same.

The final movie might grow on me eventually but the new "tron" aesthetic of the Empire doesn't buy me at all.

Once again, it looks like a movie based on fan-service concepts.

From a certain point of view, like most of nowadays american cinema, it looks like the movie is hiper-underlining some concepts. What I mean is that, visually, every single shot looks so iconic that everything ends up feeling overly intentional and not casual enough. So much for the lived-in universe, which isn't just having scruffy stuff around. The big red flag on the rally shot...so now the Empire isn't inspired by Hitler's Germany...but it IS Hitler's Germany.

OT was suggestive. Big ship catches small ship. You know who the bad guys are. PT felt different. Remember the shot that establishes the militarisation of the Republic in AOTC? Didn't it feel explicit enough? Well, add a giant flag with a nazi-like symbol and you will have bypassed the level of "explicit" into the realm of underlined.

As a designer, you only enter that path when you're out of ideas. I don't think this is the case. I believe this is more like everyone getting too exited and putting on screen everything they have been dreaming of as fanboys for the last 30 years. I can't work that way.

The movie might have some strong points and even plot wise it can be interesting. But as far as visuals, I'm already out.

Except for the shot of Han and Chewie. If the plot kills Han, then I'm out.
