How to capture HDCP-encrypted HDMI sources (Vudu, Netflix, Directv, Virgin Media, etc.) — Page 6

Hey guys, I'm back! I bought a Timeleak HD72A and its given up the ghost. I have an Elgato game capture HD had I want to record HDCP encrypted content in 1080p. I bought one of these: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/1080P-HD-MINI-HDMI-to-HDMI-AUDIO-Video-Converter-Decoder-Adapter-Remove-HDCP-KEY-Agreement-Audio/1851608529.html and was sent a defective item. I had to file a dispute with my cc company just to get me money back. Does anyone know where I can buy a HDMI splitter that strips HDCP from a reputable company that ships to Ireland?

The Mine HD887 is recommended but I cannot find. I can find an Oupree HD887 here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151408748211 - is that the same?

That one uses different chips, and I don't see any indication that it will capture HDCP sources.

If the Amazon seller of the ViewHD splitter won't ship there, a seller on eBay ships it worldwide.

Which stripping splitter is a safe buy now? I would like to buy a cheap and reliable 1x2 splitter preferably from HongKong or some EU source.

Are there reliable sources at UK Amazon or Chinese/HongKong eBay sellers?

Is there anybody here who might help me capture something ? Vudu and netflix each have something I would love capped in the highest possible quality for a project.

Well I bought a 4 way HDMI splitter from a firm in Cardiff and output 3&4 are unprotected. I actually spoke on the phone to check this. Then I bought an Avermedia Game Capture HDII. My requirement was for a stand alone device which did not need a computer. It takes an internal drive up to 2 Tb formatted as NTFS. It saves as mp4 with rates of 10,12 and 15 Mbit/s. It also allows you to up load TS to YouTube but I haven't used this feature. You can also put in an external harddrive. I am not interested in Game Capture so I then bought an Avermedia Ezrecorder which was much cheaper through Amazon at £79 - it is also standalone but does not have an internal drive but does allow for timed recordings which is what I missed - it also allows rates up to 20 Mbit/s. My Sharp AQUOS TV plays mp4 directly from the Harddrive.

What I have never been able to do is find a file format which is acceptable to my Panasonic FreeviewHD Bluray recorder. Anyone?????

Something else comes to mind - when I was backing up my Sky box a lot of the stuff was in SD. I want to copy this as SD to a DVD from an HDMI output. The DVD only has an RGB input (I guess analogue). You can get HDMI coverters to VGA, Composite (rubbish) and Component YUV (digital RGB??). Has anyone seen an HDMI to RGB converter???

I'm looking to record video off of my DVR, but I want 5.1 sound.  I think I have a solution (expensive though).

  • Video Source (HDMI out)
  • HDMI "Splitter" (removes HDCP)
  • Oppo-BD103 (convert DD5.1 to LPCM 5.1/7.1)
  • Black Magic Intensity Shuttle [BM IS] (captures content and records it to my Mac)

I already have a BM IS, but if this setup doesn't work, I'm considering trying the MXO out instead.

I also don't have the Oppo-BD103 just yet.  I've tried going Source -> Splitter -> BM IS, but I can only get stereo sound.  I'm assuming it's because the BM IS can't decode DD5.1.

If someone knows of a device that will convert DD5.1 to LPCM 5.1, then I wouldn't have to get the Oppo, but that device would also have to pass the video signal, not just the audio signal.

Thank you for any assistance you can bring :)

Update (3 Feb 2015):  I bought and tested the Oppo-BD103, and it failed.  Not only did it not decode the audio, for some reason the HDMI splitter wasn't able to successfully strip HDCP.  Didn't bother to do much investigation as to why not, because I'm at the point where I believe I need to give up on using my Mac for this solution and buy a PC with capture cards that will do what I want.

Hi Guys,

i live in Europe and i am watching Netflix USA via VPN and i want to capture the movies & tv shows in highest quality available.

Now as i understand correctly, for doing this i need 2 things

1. The HDCP Stripper - ViewHD 2 Port 1x2 Powered HDMI Mini Splitter

2. Timeleak HD70A - which when i click on the ebay link, mentioned in the first post it refers me to an other article (GrabBee-HD USB NTSC PAL HDMI Video Grabber Capture Record Video Audio 1080P 30fs)

or this Product - Mine HD887 (1080p30)

and this is all i need?

Nothing more?

Sorry for that dumb questions, but i am totally new in this kind of stuff and before i give away that much money, i wann make sure, that it is the money's worth.

Thanks for your Help

Well, highest quality for Netflix depends on having a hardware player that can show their 1080p streams, preferably output at 1080p24.

You don't need an HDCP stripper with those cards. But I believe the HD70A has the same black borders issue as the HD72A. The Mine HD887 may or may not.

@drngr

thank you so much for your help!

I already ordered last friday Timeleak HD70A

I have chosen this card, because you did not mention in the first post that it has black borders and since it was not available on ebay anymore, dinodirect was the only one who offered it but at a higher price - 136$ in ~ 2 weeks i expect the card to arrive.

and i almost went to buy The HDCP Stripper - ViewHD 2 Port 1x2 Powered HDMI Mini Splitter
on Amazon, so you are saying i don't need that?!

All i need is the Timeleak HD70A ?!

As Hardware i have :

i5-3350p (Quad Core CPU)

16GB DDR3 - RAM

and 256GB SSD (OS Drive) + 3TB WD RED Storage

i think this should be enough....

and i also have a Playstation 4

I use Netflix USA browsing US VPN via Firefox Browser on a 27" Monitor which is connected via DVI-D and i also have a second Screen which is my 40" LCD TV, which is connected via HDMI-Port

Just received the Timeleak Capture Card, but i cannot record?!

My PC is connected via HDMI Cable on my Nvidia Graphic Card and the Capture Card is connected via HDMI on my LED TV, but somehow i only have a black screen?!

Software - Honestech DVR 2.5 has already been installed & configured and HDMI has been chosen and all Drivers have been installed.

Please help me Guys, maybe i am missing something?

@drngr - Are you sure, i don't need an HDMI Splitter?!

HDCP can't be the problem if you are just trying to record your Windows desktop at the moment.

Have you set the graphics card to output 720p or 1080i to the capture card? I'm also not sure what you mean when you say the capture card is connected to the TV. The HD70A has no outputs.

my nVidia System Configuration Panel is showing it as "Silicon Image, Inc. HDMI TV" Screen, but i somehow believe, that the timeleak hd70a "only" supports D-Sub - Analog Video-In as Input?..because it shows me everytime a BlackScreen on Honestech HD DVR 2.5.

Here is my exact Setup :

Mainboard - Gigabyte GA-H77-D3H

nVidia GTX 750 TI Graphics Gard with 2 DVI & 1 HDMI Output - connected on PCI-E Slot 3 - my 27" Monitor is connected via DVI on my Graphics Card

Timeleak HD70A - connected on PCI-E Slot 1 - Connected via HDMI on my Graphics Card - using as "Cloned" Screen via nVidia System Panel.

My honestech HD 2.5 DVR Settings are:

Recording Settings : Resolution : 1920x1080

Quality : High

Speed : Good

Frame : 25 fps

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Video Capturing Device : timeleak hd capture device \ video source \ PAL-B (Austria), Signals received : 1

using internal Audiostreaming function - has been checked, because when i disable it, i cannot start recording, i get an error message, but when it is checked i do no receive the error message just a black screen when recording.

my nVidia Resolution-Settings are 1920x1080 1080i (native)

i also googled alot and found on Videohelp.com the information, that the Timeleak HD70a "only" accepts Analog (D-SUB) as Video Input?!

Is that correct? Because if this is true, then i am in a whole lot of trouble, because my Mainboard does not work with IGFX, because my CPU does not support it, so i can "only" connect with my nVidia Graphics Card.

i don't know what else i can try, i really tried everything!! for several hours...

maybe trying another Software for Capturing?

thanks for your help!

lol!!!

i've made it!!

they just gave me a a CD with an old Driver, from waayy back (Year - 2009).

Then i installed from the Homepage 1.30 Driver, which also did not work.

Now i have installed the BETA 1.30 Driver, and Voilaaa!!...now it works!

btw. my Operating System is Windows 8.1 Professional x64

with honestech hd dvr 2.5 i have experienced bad quality recording and compression artifacts, even with the highest MPEG 2 settings. (haven't found H264 Profile in honestech hd dvr 2.5)

Since i am familiar with Virtualdub, i've used for capturing with the UT Video Codec mentioned in the first Post, now my uncompressed file is 88,3 GB big with a Runtime of 42 Minutes.

Now my Question is : How can i Re-Encode the file to - 7-10 GB Size with minimum lose of Video Quality and it should recompress fast!

i already tried x264vfw in Virtualdub and it takes way too long for recompressing!! almost 1 hour! which is way too long for me

What can you suggest me Guys?

Author
Time

If you think 1 hour is too long to recompress 42 minutes, my advice would be to return the card and forget about encoding things.

But you can try changing to the fastest speed preset in x264vfw. This will mean lower quality at a given filesize, so you should also make a larger encode.

Author
Time

Alright, will try that in Virtualdub!

There is one more Problem...

Somehow, i don't have Sound while capturing?!

First i thought, it is because i have my Monitor connected via DVI-D Port & the Audio Signal cannot be transmitted, so i bought today a DVI-D to HDMI Adapter which i already plugged in, but i still do not have Sound while Capturing?!

As Playback Device i am using my 27" Monitor and as Recording Device i am using "Stereo Mix".

Please help me!

thanks!

Hi everyone

Thought I would add my experience. My main criteria was for a stand alone system - it was just too much bother to use a computer. I started off with a 4 way splitter where at least outputs 3 and 4 were non-hdcp. This came from a firm in Cardiff. I then got (on recommendation) an Avermedia Game Capture HD II which has facility for an internal drive up to 2 Gb and an external one as well from Amazon UK. This goes to 10 to 15 Mb/s. An hours prog produces an MP4 file between 4 - 8 Gb at 1080/30 - I then found the cheaper £79 Amazon UK Avermedia EZRecorder 130? which is the same but does not have an internal drive port - it goes to 20 Mb/s and has a timed recording facility which is really useful. The same remote works for both.

All this allows me to archive my SkyHD box in HD. And other HD streams as well. With USB 1Tb USB3 drives coming down to £35 it is cheaper than using DVDs or Bluray discs and both my TV's read USB MP4's directly.

Thanks for sharing! I like the thought of a stand-alone recorder and the idea of hard drives as final storage. Still, hard drives crash (and with such a BIG mess) more than I've noticed recordable discs going bad (and with a much tinier loss).

* Would the cost of a 2nd drive to mirror each 1st drive, and the time to do that after each added capture, be worth it to not save/master each new capture to a disc?
* How about the splitter, which other models seem to "work" during only limited production runs? Would you (or anyone) know if your brand/model is still "HDMI-useful" in a present day purchase?
* Do you capture 5.1 audio?
* Is there faculty for fast & frame-accurate editing to neatly trim the ends off and/or attach title cards to captures?

Yeah, i am also glad, that in the end it worked out, after several days of fighting, i just needed to take a break... :-)

In the last few days i also was in "Capture-o-Rama".

i have uploaded a few Screenshot Comparisons.

Desperate Housewives - Season 1, Episode 1 (Pilot)

Hulu Capture vs. iTunes 1080p vs. Broadcasting Untouched DVR Capture.

Hulu - http://i60.tinypic.com/30ctvkm.jpg

iTunes - http://i62.tinypic.com/2q2odxj.jpg

TNT-Glitz HD Germany 1080i - http://i61.tinypic.com/2gue2ap.jpg

Ugly Betty - Season 1, Episode 6

Hulu - http://i61.tinypic.com/1zlq0kh.jpg

iTunes - http://i60.tinypic.com/2doxg3.jpg

Hulu - http://i59.tinypic.com/2eye7pv.jpg

iTunes - http://i58.tinypic.com/zu78g.jpg

Hulu -http://i61.tinypic.com/ipa7wi.jpg

iTunes - http://i61.tinypic.com/5cyozn.jpg

i think it is a "Mish-Mash" - Overall, me thinks, Desperate Housewives Hulu & TNT Glitz HD Versions are slightly better than the itunes 1080p Versions,

on the other hand, me thinks, Ugly Betty iTunes 1080p Version is better than the 1080p Hulu Version.

i used x264vfw Compression in Virtualdub with CRF 12.0, High 5.1 Encoding Settings.

What i am also curious about these last few days, is about the legality of what i am doing...

i already captured a few TV Episodes on Netflix, but i think in the future i will not do this anymore, because i am breaking the law!!

what do you guys think about Capturing from Netflix, Hulu, etc.

is this legal?

Netflix - Terms & Conditions

You agree to use the Netflix service, including all features and functionalities associated therewith, in accordance with all applicable laws, rules and regulations, or other restrictions on use of the service or content therein. this is the first Rule i am breaking

and the 2nd Rule i am breaking is, that i am using VPN to access Contents in Netflix USA.

Whoa, those samples look great! And I'm assuming they sound great in 5.1, are in sync, and have no dropped-frames.

BTW, before you put on the cuffs and haul yourself away ...
* Different businesses may have different contracts. Different circumstances may make contracts legal fully or only in part or null & void.
* Different countries may have different laws. Different circumstances may make for exceptions as specified or implied or unwritten (common law).

Generally (as me being just some guy) speaking, if your private activities don't cause anyone else any loss, you're probably okay.  :)

i am a religious person since my birth (orthodox) and if i am breaking the law capturing Netflix & Hulu, then i will not be doing this anymore in the future.

Here in Austria, downloading is legal but uploading/sharing is illegal!..which i am not doing! I am only downloading here & there Music Videos & Live Performances

What also makes me curious, there is a Software from Germany called "Audials" which is very popular worldwide for "legally" capturing Netflix, Maxdome, etc.

Now i don't unterstand why is it "legal" capturing using Audials Moviebox and it is "illegal" capturing using HDMI Capture Card for Netflix as an Example.

i would really appreciate your input and your help guys, this would mean the world to me, because if it is illegal capturing TV Shows & Movies, then i will not do it anymore, simple as that. (then i am hoping for a Blu-Ray Release soon :-) )

Why does your piety matter in this context?

Being religious does not require you to be law-abiding and being law-abiding does not necessarily make you moral.

Would you stop practicing your religion if Austria made it illegal?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.
