Here is an early test of about 20 seconds, with the Eastman as the initial source, and the color replaced with the LPP:

We will post more of the 10 minute clip once done.

There is some red color channel that doesn't look registered quite right.

But otherwise, the colors look much better, than manual correction.

Why don't these guys work together since they obviously have skills?

They have been known to assist each other in various minor ways, but the details are left intentionally vague.

Obviously Mike can't go all out on a collaboration with them, his career would be in serious jeopardy.

Please don't go down the MySpleen path! I tried to get 'invited' to MySpleen with no luck so far. I and many others that want theatrical classic starwars on DVD or blu ray want easy access to them. A website dedicated to distributing them via download file so that we can just go to the website and download it to burn to a blank DVD or possibly blank blu ray disks.

I hate the invite system for the MySpleen access to the unaltered starwars 4-6. I honestly don't see the point. We shouldnt have to get invited to a forum. I'm still awaiting my invite to MySpleen. A forum site should have an open registration and open access to the original Star Wars unaltered. Can someone explain WHY the heck we need to be invited to get unaltered Star Wars 4-6? It's annoying because it seems like the site owners are trying to be supirior because they are the only access to unaltered Star Wars. I would try Pirate Bay but I don't really trust it and they have a few negitive comments on the unaltered Star Wars 4-6 saying video quality is sub par compared to the MySpeen versions.

You can get our releases on usenet as binaries, and from other torrent sites that aren't private.

The reason we use those is due to keeping the content in a single accessible site. File sharing lockers tend to go down, and most of the files are too large to post as single ones.

Hang in there, once you get the invitation, you will have access to more than enough material.

This is not the thread for discussing this.  Off-topic has the myspleen invite thread.  And your assumptions about superiority are incorrect.  Please use the newsgroups to obtain what you're looking for if you need it now, otherwise please don't clutter up this thread with this issue.  Thanks.

For the record, we don't need any other sources or scans from anyone else. We are using our own machines, and doing the restoration to the highest quality and standards that can be reached with our resources.

A very cool interview.  Thanks for doing it so the rest of us can get a glimpse in to the inner workings behind the scenes.  Everyone should listen to this.

For those of you interested in my attempts to upscale the raw GOUT to true high definition, see the results of the super resolution v3 upscale (my own magic recipe ;-)). It's like a veil is lifted from the GOUT. Here's a comparison between one of the better single frame upscale methods (Avisynth Spline64Resize) and super resolution v3:

For those of you that believe this result can be achieved by sharpening a single frame upscale, here's a zoomed comparison between a sharpened Avisynth Spline64Resize and super resolution v3. From this example it is very clear that super resolution can restore real detail, even if the source material is not ideal:

Sorry my bad. Won't happen again. I got my invite so it's all good now. I'm now downloading empire strikes back after getting a new hope.

Here is an improved version of the HSV method using the bunwarpJ plugin, which can access up to 32bit color images.

There are less artifacts in this version. It does take awhile to render, at about 1 frame per 30 seconds.

OK, so the original LPP looks way better, so what's the point of all this? Just as an interesting curiosity?

^I wanted to ask that, but didn't bother.

So consider this post another person asking why, too.

Torrents vs. Newsgroups vs. Lockers aside, I just wanted to point out that the files can easily be broken into parts for uploading to locker sites.  Plenty of large projects are uploaded this way.

Hi, team_negative1!

I've been trying to find you're use of the HSL recombination technique (since your mention over at msycamore's THX 1138 "preservations" thread) -- if you caught my reply there.

Spaced Ranger said:

I had better success in first equalizing the Luminance of the separations before recombination in muddyknees2000's The Hobbit Rankin/Bass Animated Film (see Page 4 that thread). In that case, ... The DVD was too dark to accurately carry the VHS Hue & Saturation. A "color correction" of the B&W DVD Luminance was first made to match the VHS Luminance (very easy with B&W only) before recombination.

You're having the same problem in this instance. The faded film's Luminance is too light for recombination with the LPP's Hue & Saturation, to accurately carry those colors.

So, after HSL-splitting the faded film and the LPP, you'll see their Luminances are not near enough to one another. Since you're adding LPP's Hue and Saturation to the faded film's Luminance, you'll want to adjust the faded film's Luminance to approximate LPP's Luminance ..

                              faded film                                                                             LPP

           faded film-L & LPP-HS recombination                                                    LPP

faded film-L adjusted to match LPP-L

     faded film-L(adj.) & LPP-HS recombination                                               LPP

BTW, there is a little mis-registration between the two screenshots that resulted in mis-aligned coloring. You would want to conform them to better line up, for better results (no "color fringing").

Yep. The video looks worse than the stills - the colour is all over the place.

We are always constantly running tests on film clips, as you know.

1) The tools we are testing out, are for registration purposes. This is one test. As you can see, it still requires some work.

2) The color calibration is also preliminary, and is being altered also.

So, yes, this is only a brief initial test and experiment.

We have multiple sources that we are integrating with the LPP, and the results have been excellent.

In fact, its going to easily help the clean up of Reels 1 and 6 by an order of magnitude. They still need some work on the dark scenes, starfields, and dust and smoke scenes.

We will continue to post intermediate steps as we progress.

I'm kind of new to this forum, and catching up. Came across it when I discovered Harmy's despecialized editions. I just want to say I'm amazed by the amount of work (and years) that's gone into restoring these 35 mm prints. Great work fellas! As much as I love the work Harmy has done on combining elements from different sources to reconstruct the originals, it's equally wonderful to see the progress made at restoring the originals from an analogue source.

Yesterday I had the chance to go to a private screening of an IB TECH Star Wars 1977 35mm print in Los Angeles.

All I can say is wow - this print was in INSANE shape. Great colors and almost no scratches. Basically was in a time capsule - mesmerizing.

Actually, that print was about a 6/7!  Reels 4 &5 were its best.  But just goes to show you that film, especially Tech IB is a beautiful thing; even an average print is wonderful.  Senator, by comparison, is about a 7/7.5.  Glad you enjoyed it.

Jealous!  Wish I'd heard about this, would have driven up for it (assuming "private" means "in-the-know" and not just a small group of friends).

Using color correction on the HSV results in much better color matching to the original. So you can modify pre or post image. Will be posting some comparison clips.
