Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 99

Kylo Ren’s Imperial Shuttle flies with TIE Fighters to a Star Destroyer.

Sounds terrible like the Special Edition.  "alert my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival."

Darth Vader’s helmet sitting on a podium. Sounds stupid it burned up in a fire.

No Luke Skywalker. Echoes the rumors that Mark Hamill is only in the film for a few minutes and is also dumb.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Fanatical audiophiles with ultrasonic hearing will. ;-)

Indeed ...... and I'm sure they'll be the first to let us all here know too.

Sounds like the opening shot of ROTJ to me. It also communicates to the audience the Empire is still in business.

It's silly to assume Vader only had one suit and no spare parts. (It's the thing keeping him alive, if you remember.) In fact, it helps explain the differences in the costume across the OT.

Do you really want the trailer to give away the whole deal? We have eight months to go. Given the amount of time Mark spent getting back in shape, and the time spent in England filming, it's going to be more than a glorified cameo at the very least.

I like how we're bitching about a trailer that might not even exist.

I hope you're right!  However, Carrie also spent a great deal of time and energy getting back into shape, but I have a feeling she won't get much screen time.

Nah. Dr. Doom's an awesome character. I doubt Mr. Ren will be even a quarter as captivating.

Just wait till you see him paired up with Kylo Stimpy in Episode VIII...

Here's what makes me cautious about TFA:

1. What worked in the late 70s/early 80s won't necessarily translate well for modern audiences.

2. JJ Abrams's last film was Star Trek Into Darkness; and the rest of his filmography isn't exactly stellar.

3. Harrison Ford hasn't been in a good movie since maybe The Fugitive, and the last time he played an iconic character it was Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.

4. Remember when we were excited about Episode I, and thought it would bring Star Wars back to its glory days? History might be repeating itself, as the motivations for making TFA are the exact same as Prequels 15 years ago.

 1. If visuals, I'm sure JJ is not making it look exactly like it is from then.  If story, the OT is still cherished now.  We just need a little extra freshness from modern screenwriting thrown into attract today's audiences.

2. JJ didn't grow up as a Trek fan, so he didn't have the same passion, love, and care for the series as he did very much for Star Wars.

3. Lucas isn't here to F things up, since he was the one that pretty much ruined everything that could have been good about that film.

4. It's still too early to prove any of that happening just yet.  And so far, of the one trailer we saw there was nothing completely stupid in it like Jar-Jar and clumsy robots like in the TPM teaser.  Sure though, I still don't think TFA will be as good as SW and ESB, from what has been officially seen so far, there is little reason to doubt it could be the first good SW film since ESB, but things could change in the upcoming months, since you just never know.

Besides, Into Darkness's problems had to do with its script, not or barely with its director. I can say I liked all of Abrams' films I've seen so far (I haven't seen Super 8 yet), so I'm confident that it will at least be fun and not "skip to the battles" boring, like the prequels were.

Reasons 2 and 3 are pretty legitimate. Into Darkness was absolutely terrible (though most of the blame for that goes to those ubiquitous garbage mongering hacks Kurtzman and Orci). And Harrison Ford has been phoning in his performances for decades now. Since there is every indication that Han will have the largest role to play out of all the OT characters in this film, that could well be a problem.

As for reason 4 - That's really more a reason to rein in expectations than to expect objectivey bad quality from this film per se. Nobody should be blindly walking into this thing like we did back in 1999. Fool me thrice, shame on George Lucas; fool me four times, shame on me.

Reason 1 is no reason at all as far as I'm concerned. By the looks of the teaser trailer, JJ Abrams is not feeling himself overly obliged to slavishly reproduce the visual style of 1977-1983. And as for the rest of the film's elements, particularly plot, story structure, editing etc. I sincerely hope it doesn't work for modern audiences, inasmuch as utterly worthless brain-melting shit like the Transformers movies apparently do "work" for modern audiences. A film that takes its cues from great movies of yesterday, and paces itself with some intelligence and deliberateness rather than striving to meet a Michael Bay-like quota of explosions and mind-numbing action at the expense of story is one that is aces in my book. Gareth Edwards' delightfully restrained Godzilla, though it has its flaws, is proof that a less-is-more approach is every bit as viable today as it was three decades ago.

Yeah, Orci & Lindelof did not write TFA, so we should be okay on that front.

He should have mentioned something about TFA contributing to global warming in there. If he's going to make statements no one's going to take seriously, then he may as well have gone for the gusto.

Wait a minute, didn't Luke burn Vader's suit at the end of Jedi? We all know that, right?
