What happened here?

From the expert:

"haha, i was waiting for that. yeah, first time it ran fine, second time, after some cleaning, a small tear decided to go across the frame, so i set a splice and ran the reel again."

It's a 50 year old print in a rough and fragile state. We certainly expected things like this to occur during the restoration process. That's where digital cleanup comes in!

It's surprising how much it has been cleaned up. I thought most of those vertical scratches would be there for good.

Wow. I've been reading this thread and am stunned.

This looks to be shaping up to something very, very, special.

UPDATE!

The print has been undergoing a $hitload of TLC over the past few months. For instance, the restoration working on the film just finished repairing a TEN FOOT TEAR without losing a single frame! It's a very time consuming process and can only be accomplished by someone like him with extensive knowledge and experience (a rarity nowadays).

Here is a link to a before/after comparison of R1 footage:

This is after numerous cleaning passes. No attempt has been made to color correct the scan as of yet. But it's abundantly clear that the MGM 4K BD is way off.

Enjoy!

Can you reupload this? I missed it.

Courtesy of magicians like Andrea there's plenty of room for further repair and cleanup in the digital domain after the physical restoration is complete.

The main thread for updates on this project is over at fanres.com so I encourage you to visit that site for updates.

(I'm basically cutting and pasting links from over there to here.)

@Lil Brutto: thanks! Hope to find someone skilled enough (and with a LOT of patience, time, good software and fast hardware) to clean it up totally!

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

The New Beverly is screening an IB tech print of GBU at the end of the month.

Anyone here lucky enough to check it out?

If so, I envy you.

Here's a 5 min sample clip of an IB tech of the US cut that was generously provided to us for 4K scanning:

My partner-in-crime, who is very experienced in video editing (it's actually his day job), converted the HDR files using DaVinci Resolve.

I asked him to keep the digital tweaking to an absolute minimum; that is, only perform a color correction (we're about 90% there) based on my notes from the IB tech theatrical presentation at the New Beverly in LA.

Here is what he did: ‘Skin tone balanced one light color correction. No stabilization, dirt removal or damage repair.’

I look forward to your feedback.

Enjoy!

Any new updates?

Just repeat to yourself “It’s just a film, I should really just relax”

Been following this on the sidelines, even though i am late to the start,i think it is SO cool you actually have an original print of this awesome movie.

I just watched your 5min comparison,it looks extremely promising!

I was, as so many others, horrified at the recent "remaster",so you guys taking to time to profesionally restore the original print,is truly magnificent.

I grew up watching this movie over and over again, and remember it fondly, but i havent seen it since i sold my laserdisk collection.

I bought the new remaster, but have sold it again, after i watched the begining with the 3 bounty hunters after tuco, and the horrible new gunshots and other sound effects,as well as the moronic yellow/green tinge to everything.

Looking forward to reading a lot more about your private restoration.

I'm pleased to know interest hasn't waned in this preservation project.

We're inching closer and closer to a "grindhouse" release.

Hello everyone,

I got ahold of something very rare that might be of interest. The workprint version of TGBU. Unfortunately the whole workprint is dubbed in spanish. The only difference between the workprint and the released version is during the scene when Blondie shoots there’s no music during the scene, on-set sounds only.

Edit: as Lil Brutto clarified on the Sergio Leone forum, this is not the workprint but the Spanish VHS transfer which has no audio during the scene and includes screener information just before the movie begins, here is the link for the VHS version.
