I believe I still have my Metropolitan VHS, but that would be at my parents' house.

its somewhere between them both!

That's from the Laserdisc? So you're telling me that the yellow sunset sky was there originally? What year is that Laserdisc? Were there prior Laserdiscs with a bluer or whiter sky?

1996? That is amazing to me. I never saw the movie like this back in the day. The first time I saw that yellow sky was on the 2001 DVD and it felt so wrong to me. Especially since the DVD extra that shows how they reframed and color corrected it was using that specific scene that showed a negative with a blue sky. That means my VHS, TV broadcasts and 1999 DVD were way off before 2001. I wonder how it looked in French theaters, then.

Never realized how much Se7en was mucked about with for home video.

I could be wrong, but was the 2001 DVD Fincher's work? For some reason, I thought he was involved in the making of the transfer, in a (somewhat misguided) attempt to recreate the original look.

How much he was involved depends greatly on who you listen to.

but he has been trying to recreate the photochemical look of cce since

I have a few frames from a 35mm release print - it's a single shot (Somerset next to an electrical pylon in the finale), but may be informative. I'll post a pic as soon as I've figured out how to scan it!

I would like to see that, is it a cce print?

Author

I very much doubt it - it's from the wide UK release (Feb 1996).

Nope, shame still would be cool to see

FYI Everyone

HD Net Movies is Playing Se7en tonight. It will be on a few more times. It looks pretty good. I am not sure of the print as I do not have the BD. I have the flipper DVD and the 2 disc Criterion preservation as well as the New Line  Platinum Series 2 disc set. You might want to check it out.

Here are some pictures taken just yesterday in Paris, France, during a 35mm screening. I have many more as I pretty much covered all the shots of the first 3 reels before my battery ran out on my iPhone 4. These were taken with HDR enabled. I can attend to another screening wednesday evening, so I’ll try to cover the rest of the movie.

I was shocked to see how dark the movie was. And I thought the Bluray was too dark. Not at all. In fact It’s still too bright. Colorwise, the film was mostly brown with a touch of gold. It felt warm. Except for the office scene between the captain and Somerset, that was colder and greener, I’d say. Generally, it looked different from every color timing I’ve seen on DVD or Blu-ray. Oddly, when switching some pictures to the neutral “none” setting on the iPhone app instead of the “transfer” setting, it resembles the New Line Platinum/Metropolitan DVD from 2000/2001. But with “transfer” on, it matches more what I actually saw projected. Most notably on the stomac shot and the fingerprint lab guy.

That’s not a CCE print I would bet from those shots.
Mind you it may be the HDR mode on the camera

I’ve just watched the Blu-ray, and I’d say it’s dark enough but has better definition so you can see more details, like the 3rd arm of the sloth victim that you would have to know is there to notice on 35mm. The end-end with the captain and Somerset until the last shot with the Hemingway quote is actually way too dark on Blu-ray. On 35mm, it looked more like the 2000 Newline DVD Platinum. Overall I’d say the 35mm is in between the 2000 DVD and the Blu-ray. It would be interesting to see how it would look using the darkness of the Blu-ray and the color timing of 2000 that is presented on the Dutch Blu-ray. If one of you colormatch wizzards feels like it…

Okay, so now, after 3 viewings of the 35mm, I managed to take pictures until the bar scene near the end.
For the rest, I compared with the 2000 color timing and the 2010 Blu-ray. The conversation scene of John Doe and his lawyer behind the glass is different from both: it’s cooler in 35mm with a shade of pink on Doe’s convict uniform. The sunset scenes around 7:00 o’clock look more like the Blu-ray while in the car. Then, it looks more like the 2000 DVD but warmer with the darkness of the Blu-ray. And the epilogue with Mills arrested in the backseat of the copcar and Somerset and the captain discussing him is a lot closer to the 2000 DVD with the dominant yellow. The 2010 Blu-ray is way too dark in the end.

I know this Thread is a few years old now, the CCE version has been attempted to be recreated over the years, so could you consider putting in the criterion LD AC3 or (if you can find it) audio from the theater DTS CD. (You know, syncing the audio up the Blu-ray.)

Author
Time

In order to help reviving an old thread - I could provide the AC3 audio from the first US DVD, PCM from the Japanese LaserDisc as well as DTS from the US LaserDisc if required. The Cinema DTS source would be very interesting to compare and nice to have as well of course. Anyone in possession of that by any chance?

I own the region 4 special edition DVD and imported the American flipper DVD. I’d love to be able to check out the laserdisc for comparison…you know, if there was some way to do that…cough

just thought I’d correct a small mistake here

the CCE master wasn’t just on the Criterion LD, it was also on the very FIRST New Line DVD (the flipper DVD), I have a rip of it and it does look identical to the LD
