Star Wars Digital HD Release .... April 10th — Page 2

Also, I like how the guy talks about the digital release being in "glorious 4k". Don't they know that the 2004/2011 transfer is 1080p in 8-bits? Even the 97se is limited to 2k resolution. I don't know where they are getting "glorious 4k" from.

This is just corporate exploitation: selling a substandard product for as much money as they can, and flat out lying to us. Disney Loves to do this just so they can reap maximum profits with zero work.

Every article I see about this is followed by TONS of comments of people wanting the real movies.

We're not  a niche movement. Most people don't like creepy Hayden at the end.

Disney does not care. The OOT might as well be lost forever; they might ever order the LOC to destroy the remaining prints of the originals  for copyright infringement. I just have two words: Steamboat Willie.

Probably worse quality than the retail BD, highly compressed.  Not sure i have never used VUDU.

I mean you take the same master and compress it further how is it going to look better?

Why would you compress it further?  BD is 1080p.  Digital HD simply means 1080p (or 720p) sent digitally (no media).  There's no need to recompress.

Because no streaming file even in 2015 is going to be 50 gigs of data. As far as i know, maybe i have old information.

I guess it depends on how they do it then.  I have a hard time believing that a 1080p movie is 50 gig in size even if it is on a 50 gig disc (which could easily have been done due to simple laziness).  If they take it from the master instead of the BD, it can be done quite well.

I don't really have a problem with streaming 50 gigs of data though.  I have a 20 meg connection at home and my phone essentially has unlimited data (I don't get charged for going over my cap).  I don't expect to be able to stream the entire movie in just a few minutes, but I can stream it fast enough on a 20 meg connection to have no dropouts while watching and it'll continue to stream while paused (until the buffer fills anyway).

To me, there is very big news here.  They are including Episode IV which is supposed to be owned by Fox.  This means they worked out a deal with them to be able to distribute the complete set.  This means we might actually see the originals released and the fact that Fox owns a portion won't be a show stopper.

Most people?  LOL.  If anything, there's a 50/50 split between the people that don't care or love the changes (not this crowd) and the people that hate the changes (this crowd).  But the real question is: are you going to buy it anyway?  If you're going to buy it anyway, then it doesn't matter.  They only have something to lose if a significant portion of the population decides they aren't going to buy any further merchandise until the OOT is released properly.

How many of the people that are commenting on the articles you're reading really aren't going to buy it?  I don't have any of the bluray releases because I refuse to buy any more copies of these movies until they release an unaltered version.  I don't even buy any prequel merchandise if I can help it.

Besides, they could just be waiting until the release of Episode VII to release a remastered OOT.

Fox doesn't own Star Wars, they're just the only ones who can distribute this. However, you are correct in that it does show that Disney/LFL has worked something out.

What I find really interesting is they aren't advertising this collection with episode numbers like they have in the past.  I guess they want to remain consistent with The Force Awakens marketing.

Facts:

1) Disney and Fox have something worked out

2) We know the new 4k master exists

Rumour:

1) Comicbook email last summer about OOT

Conjecture:

1) There's money to be made on OOT release

2) They're going heavy on the OT nostalgia

A 50GB disc contains more than just video ..... there are the audio selections, commentary, languages and special features (if any) so even when a movie is released on a 50GB disc, it is NOT 50GB worth of movie .... they use it to give the video more room ..... other than that, you're getting stuff on a 50GB disc.

LOL

Disney never advertised it as "4k". The "glorious 4k" comment was just a commenter who didn't do their research.

If they already own the blu-rays, they might feel there isn't any reason to buy the digital releases.

This is what I find most exciting about these commercials.

That being said, the fact that these digital releases are the SEs doesn't worry me because I think that an OUT release will debut in some sort of box set, not online streaming. The new "bonus extras" are intriguing, I have no idea what that'll be.

That's a good point.  Releasing the OUT digitally and only digitally could end up like another GOUT release.

A New Hope is listed as 20th Century Fox and doesn't have the blue Disney bar at the bottom.  The others are Lucasfilm Ltd.

Aren't the others supposed to be under Fox distribution until 2019 or something? Does this mean that they worked a deal out to hand over the others early, but Fox is of course hanging on to distribution rights for the one they own in perpetuity?

If they ever release the OOT again it's probably going to be another "special feature" DVD only release (no Blu): but anamorphic this time!

It is £69 to rent this compressed version on a long-term basis from Amazon, the "uncompressed" Blu-Ray is £49 to own forever. You'd have to be mentally ill to order this thing.

Can we really trust a company that has censored Fantasia and still uses "dubtitles" on the Studio Ghibli films to bring us a properly restored OOT on Blu-Ray? They still haven't even released Song Of The South on any video format!

This really isn't for people who have an HDTV or want to watch it on anything other than a rental basis at home. People mostly use digital copies for tablets, laptops, and phones so they can watch it on the go.

It was always George's vision that you would watch this on your phone while on the crapper. I expect 3 fawning handjob articles on Shiny Robot about how lucky we are for the privilege of buying these digital copies that usually come free with blu-rays.

It was always George's vision to troll his fan base and take credit from other people who made the OT great, and make millions of people miserable just for his own amusement. He made the right choice by conspiring with Disney.

What I'm really curious about is wether they will release the deleted scenes that were only on the DVD in HD. Those would be useful for fanediting since they always stick out as SD on an HD fanedit.

Check out my Episode I edit.
