I hope that will actually be the case.

 C3PO: That isn't very reassuring.

Indeed. Best of luck Harmy! And if you can't get it done "in time", no worries.

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

Quick question: Since so many of the shots in the latter half of Jedi have blinking ewoks, will the entirety of all shots with ewoks in them be replaced with the HDTV 04 SE, or will the blu ray footage and the HDTV footage be integrated into the same shots with only certain parts of the frame being the HDTV?

The HDTV source is of high enough quality, that that would be just pointless work to do that, so yeah, the whole shots will be replaced.

Just an FYI,

there are no links for the NTSC DVD5 edition on tehPARADOX currently.

The other two movies are, and they made me cry a little when I watched them, so well done and brings back so many fond memories ;)

I doubt Harmy will put up new links to an old version, but if you look hard enough I'm sure you'll be able to find it. I'd wait for V2.0, personally.

I think that's the way to go, I have the AVCHD version but having an SD would be nice.

Anakin's eyebrows blend better with the surrounding footage in the downscaled DVD version ;)

But that will soon be of no concern anyway

Hey guys,

'First of all, mazel tov on this culturally imperative undertaking. Truly brilliant and important work.

I have the latest editions and would love to enjoy them on my HDTV. Trying to put a video file on an XBox is a tough proposition because of filesize limitations and I'd rather have a hard connection than a wireless one. Does anybody know compression settings, and method, for converting the .avi's into a compatible Roku video file? I'd be plugging a USB into the Roku. I've tried using both Adobe Media Encoder and Sony Vegas (PC-based) to convert based on Roku's own listed settings but I keep getting an error shortly into conversion. Programs both work fine on other projects...

Thanks

This project is not available in AVI format, unless you got some low-quality third-party re-encode off a torrent site.  I'd suggest downloading the real thing, as the quality and compatibility are both undoubtedly much better.

Oh wow, had no idea. Did it get from a torrent, thought it was the real thing.

I'm super looking forward to this edition of Jedi. It's my favourite of the original trilogy and the one that suffered the most from its alterations.

Liking Jedi more than SW or Empire is something you should discuss with your psychologist, but I was under the impression that Jedi was the *least* butchered by the SE treatment.

As far as the SE goes, I think its changes are the worst. It probably got far *fewer* changes compared to ANH, because the effects shots held up a bit better. But, while ANH Jabba was more like a shitty deleted scene reinstated, "Jedi Rocks" was a new level of in-your-face terribleness. And the Sarlacc beak is nearly as bad.

But after adding Hayden , "Wesa free!", and "Nooo", I think it quite easily qualifies for worst changes. I think Empire easily got the best end of the SE stick, regardless.

And as far as a favorite goes, I of course recognize the other two as better films. But I grew up re-watching Jedi much, much more, because I think we got that VHS before the other two. So it's got an extra helping of nostalgia for me.

At this point in my life, I don't care bout "better." Empire may be the definitive Star Wars film but the sense of catharsis and wonder I get from Jedi is incomparable. I can't wait to see the "Lapti Nek," sarlacc and celebration sequences restored to their original simplistic glory.

EDIT: HD, glory, I mean. I already have the 1.0 version of Jedi Despecialized.

I have to say, as a kid, Jedi was my favorite, but then again the ewoks obviously didn't bother me then.  haha

Obviously now I understand why Empire is by far superior to SW or Jedi, but Jedi will always hold a special place in my heart for being the most worn out vhs in my collection

It just dawned me that I've never watched the SE Empire or Jedi.  I was so disgusted by the SW changes that I swore off the SEs there.

I do have a warm spot for Jedi because I worked in a theater when it came out, and I had it timed so I'd walk in at the best parts (light saber duels, space battles, and of course force-lightening).

Thanks for the explanation, towne32.

Harmy, how do you deal with digital noise reduction? You said you had to contend with it for the first two, but how would your process be with, say, plastic-faced Luke in the following link?

Here be DNR

Author

That is not what the BD looks like. But if there were scenes looking like that, I would simply add some grain.

Author

Oh! That's weird. I've never watched the official BDs so I assumed they had gone full Predator: Ultimate Hunter Edition on them. Well that's more of a relief. Thanks!

What was that image from? They've got the DNR cranked up so high that his hair even has that 'painting-ish' look that a few blu-rays have.

While this would make the picture look more natural at first glance, it doesn't bring back the image detail that was lost in the DNR process. I know that there are some cases in the trilogy where you added digital grain but I don't really see a real benefit in this. It's just adding something artificial to the image instead of bringing back the original grain and the image details that were removed with it.

I think it's more of a last resort to remove the plastic-looking surfaces caused by DNR, especially in skin. The goal is always to preserve as much of the original detail as possible, but there's only so much you can do when it has been scrubbed and smeared away by DNR.
