The Mono Mix Restoration Project (Released) — Page 10

Well, for what it's worth, I now have a GOUT-synced "hybrid" mono track for Star Wars.  Here's how it was assembled:

Reel 1: Spanish 35mm capture from -1 for fanfare, English 35mm capture for everything else

Reel 2: Belbucus audio to cover a little damage at the beginning and end of the reel, English 35mm capture for everything else (end of reel 2 is Tarkin saying "one swift stroke")

Reels 3-5: Belbucus audio

Reel 6: Spanish 35mm capture for the awards ceremony through the end credits, Belbucus audio for everything else.

I tried patching in Spanish 35mm audio in other places without any dialogue, but it just didn't work well.  I actually think the result is quite listenable and the transitions are relatively seamless.  That said, don't just assume I didn't make some sort of rookie mistake and screw something up before you go do something crazy like deleting your other copies of the mono mix.

The track is available in FLAC, DTS-MA mono and 112k lossy AC3.  PM me if you're interested.

We expect to a much better version of the complete mono mix shortly, there is still room for improvement as it is not from a 35mm source.

But it is definitely a step up from the current sources out there.

More news once we have it.

Exciting stuff! The mono mix is my 'go to' for Star Wars. It's the I was used to hearing from the original TVS/ITV broadcast here in the early 80s. Belbecus did an amazing job, but it'll be cool to hear it from a decent source.

Nice!!!

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

If we are talking about the mono from Jaxxon's 16mm print, I hope proper credit is given?

It took a lot of carrot cake persuasion to loan out that print again. ;)

We now will be able to post an improved version of this mix.

It has not been checked for GOUT compatability.

So there's a new version of the mono mix coming soon? Should I tell the guys working on the Despecialized BD to wait for it?

Good evening Mr. Hen,

It has been awhile.

Ran across this post, and wanted to respond with a correction. The restoration of the mono mix never employed any audio from the Dolby Stereo mix as filler. Aside from the 20 Century Fox fanfare and portions of the opening and closing music, it is all from the two mono sources. (Luckily, the commercial breaks occurred at different intervals on the two, allowing me to patch any gaps on one with the other.)

From the original thread:

Originally posted by skijedi2005:

is there a way to get those from a stereo source say the star wars soundtrack anthology box set and convert them to mono? Or would it be better to get it from the 35mm mix?

Everything except portions of the opening and closing music are from the actual mono mix soundtrack – about 85-90% from the Moth3r transfer and the remainder from the Allan Mikkelsen transfer – equalized to match the former. After comparing the possible options, I pulled the open/close music from the original 1980 CD release on RSO, as it seemed to be the closest match. The later CD issues have all been remixed and/or remastered, and the various stereo film elements all have some degree of delay added (presumable to enhance the surround presentation) which sounded quite processed when folded down to mono. Again the music from the CD was equalized to match the Moth3r material. Even then it still sounded a bit too “pristine,” so it was transferred once to audiocassette and back to get the additional analogue tape compression needed to better match the Moth3r material.

So usually I post this for people who haven’t really been away at all, but welcome back!

I’ve read through this thread, and I’m unclear on a couple of points. Does anyone know:

  1. What source(s) the latest publicly-available version of the mono mix restoration is derived from?

  2. What version is muxed into the MKV of Harmy’s ANH DeEd 2.5?

I ask because I re-watched that the other day, with the mono mix; it sounded so good, I can’t believe it’s derived from a couple of bootleg VHS tapes!

It is indeed VHS broadcast recordings from Europe with the CD soundtrack for the titles.

It has taken us some time, but there will be a better preservation of the mono soundtrack, thanks to Jaxxon.
