I disagree. One of the main purposes of humor is to desecrate, one should be able to have a laugh even at very serious matters. Nothing should ever be "untouchable", because if you can't joke about X then you can't joke about Y, Z and so on. Then what?
first you say one of the main purposes of humor is to desecrate, then you say nothing should be untouchable? really? I'm sorry, some things shouldn't be desecrated.
Be specific. Discuss your claim.
It don't already know what shouldn't be desecrated, it is difficult to explain it.
no it isn't. don't avoid the matter.
I am not saying you can never have a laugh with serious subject, I am just saying that there are some situations where making a joke is not right or appropiate.
Same as above. Tell me where is that written.
allow me to re-write what I wrote aboove
I am not saying you can never have a laugh with a serious subject, I am just saying that there are some situations where making some kinds of jokes is not right or appropiate.
for example: if a a Holocaust survivor was talking about his experiences in a concentration camp, do you think it would be right to make a joke like this:
"boy the holocause sure was a gasser wasn't it?"
come on, you really want to tell me there is no such thing as an inappropriate joke? no such thing as something that isnt' a laughing matter?
oh, you were talking about context. somehow I missed that. my apologies.
Of course you wouldn't tell that joke during a serious reunion. No one is that insensitive. Tell it after the reunion is over, even if, I'll acknowledge, it's a bit on the weak side.
And why is it wrong to proceed with caution when dealing with sensitive subjects?
as for where to draw the line, I think you are smart enough to realize that there are some subjects that are sensitive and touchy and some that are not.
Maybe I'm not, maybe I'm a dumb cunt. Don't patronize me.
whatever.
and there we go, Warbler's favourite dismissive answer. Fill the square in your bingo cards, folks!!
Oh, there's another option, isn't there? Winging. Wonderful.
Winging?
I meant "wingeing", or "whingeing", with an h if you prefer.
Yes, I have the right to offend you.
you have the right, but that doesn't make it the right thing to do.
yes it does. What does "freedom of speech" mean to you? If Bob wants to say something, he has the right to say it doesn't he? If what he says offends you, should he be stopped from saying it? And I want a straight answer.
No, no one asked you to move this conversation here.
um . . .
um what? I was replying to you in the "bitch" thread. I was not touching the "Bingowings" matter in my reply. Then you go and reply to me in this thread.
You see what you're doing with this? Post Praetorian and the others were discussing about how they miss Bingo in Off Topic, then you barged in and you made it about yourself, as usual.
Ok, now it's about you. You wanna complain about a bully? You got one.
