Since this the only major 35mm restoration being actually released, it needs to be handled with the care we have given to it.

Team Negative1

There are private restorations underway?  Any using better source reels than you have?

Everyone has pretty much the same sources, some people have different scans of the prints though, of course only speaking about Star Wars.

We are not using anyone else's scans, and don't need them. Ours are more than adequate for now and future proofing.

team_negative1: You talked about "Grindhouse, Test, and Preview versions of all the films". I guess a fully cleaned up and restored version comes after all that? :P

We will definitely be releasing the Grindhouse, Test, and Preview versions of all the films, afterwards also.

We think it's important to preserve the history and intermediate steps taken with all of them.

Also, they're fun to watch, and useful for other edits.

Team Negative1

Ah great, glad to hear it :)

You guys could at least be bothered to read the first couple posts of this thread to learn what this project is about. Team -1's project is the leading preservation out there that isn't being kept behind closed doors.

If it were Tobbar instead I would assume that he's a big ATHF fan.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

We haven't really updated the first post, however our goals remain the same.

To release the highest quality preservation from multiple 35mm scans. With the original stereo soundtrack, the Spanish soundtrack, and the mono soundtrack.

These will maintain the integrity of the film, with the minimum amount of alteration. Basically dust and dirt cleanup, stabilization and color correction.

All original flaws and artifacts will be preserved. There may be a more fully restored version afterwards depending on demand.

How far away are we from an empire like Grindhouse release?

Author

They've said they don't plan to do one of those for Star Wars until after they've completed their restoration first.

Yes, that is correct. There will be a Grindhouse release after we are finished restoring it. No timeframe on when that will be. It could be a few weeks after, or a few months. Though the Grindhouse releases are very watchable, and ready to go, we want people to experience the restored versions first for Star Wars and Return of the Jedi.

Out of curiosity, why do you wish people to experience Star Wars and Jedi in a restored way first?

Is it just a practical decision based on the state of the reels you have, or an artistic choice? I.e. Wars and Jedi both have very flashy, effects driven endings, Empire less so, so those two are not suitable fo a grind house release.

I feel like this was discussed very recently.

Star Wars is what started this all off, even though the prints of Empire Strikes Back were first.

And that had always been our main goal. The other movies are secondary in interest, and done for the sake of completion.

We all have our favorites, and Star Wars is there at the top the majority of the time.

Again, this is also considering the state of the prints we have now. Although we do have a superior print of Empire Strikes Back, we only have so much time and resources to dedicate to restoration.

Return of the Jedi is in very good condition, and should not take as long to restore.

We think everyone has had enough of Empire Strikes Back to keep them satisfied with what we have released for awhile, so thats not going to be a priority.

We have some interesting developments with Star Wars, and will post something shortly.

Sorry if that's already been discussed, but I was reading some comments on Blu-ray.com and came across a link to this:

The guy mentions 4K restoration, so I'd say this isn't you guys, right? Seems to be a parallel project. Is it a former member of Team Negative1?

It's a completely independent project: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/StarWarsLegacy-com-The-Official-Thread/topic/1418/

Right, thanks. I just found out for myself. But since it's a 2004 thread, I really don't feel like reading 11 years of messages, so what's the deal with this independent project? Is a release going to show up on Blu-ray just like Team Negative1 plan to do? Why don't these guys work together since they obviously have skills?

It's archival. Mr. Verta has no plans to ever release his restoration unless it's via an official channel; e.g., Disney purchases it from him.

Long-story-short: It's not for us. It's for our Star-Wars-is-in-the-public-domain-holy-shit!!!1 descendants.

Let's not clog up Team-1's thread any more than we already have.

Okay, thanks for summing it up. So we'll rely on Team Negative1 to be amazed at home.

Keyword being descendants. I have doubts that Star Trek TOS and Hartnell/Troughton Doctor Who Serials will be released into the public domain in my lifetime, let alone Star Wars.

So... Copyright law in it's current state is ridiculous. Keep in mind that ST:TOS and B&W DW are from the '60s. The OUT is from Late '70s/Early '80s.

If copyright law were a little saner, I wouldn't be surprised if those '60s items were in public domain now.

Just for testing purposes, if anyone wants to experiment on the Red Reel 5 that was posted earlier. We got some decent results, for some frames using the method of replacing HSV channels as described here:

Doing full video clips has shown there is still some new artifacts, but the color replacement looks good.

The color look good, could you post a video after the hsv correction?

I will try using it as a starting point

One solution for the artifact is copying the v channel from the original uncorrected frame,do the hue saturation correction and then paste the v channel
