Oh dear, let's hope this ends up going the way of the Cowboy Beebop movie

I know some people will think I am being too gloomy and I know Robotech was always shaped by American writers but I have never seen Hollywood do anything related to Anime that has not been a disaster, and given that Sony couldn't even handle a franchise as simple as Spider-Man without screwing it up the idea of them trying to bring something as complex as Robotech to the big screen just gives me a sinking feeling.

You just know they will keep the Japanese character names but then cast a bunch of young whiter then white Jersey Shore types because Asian actors are not allowed to be anything other then stereotypes straight out of World War 2 in Hollywood movies.  Also I bet the dialog will be full of self aware humor and everyone will be joking in combat and all commentary on the horrors of war will be replace with "YEAH, THE AMERICAN MILITARY IS THE BEST, KILL ALL THOSE DEVILS WHO ARE NOT AMERICANS!!  NOW LET'S HAVE A CHEESEBURGER WITH EXTRA LARD ON THE SIDE!" BS.

I am sorry if anyone thinks I am being too harsh but I just don't see any hope for this in the modern Hollywood studio franchise system and the fact that it is coming from the studio who could handle Spider-Man just fill me with more gloom.

I think the best we can hope for is that this will turn out like the live action Cowboy Beebop movie and it never happens.

Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't ROBOTECH as we yanks know it an American invention, slamming together and simplifying the stories of like, twelve different Japanese cartoons about robot space ships?

Yeah as I said in my opening post I know this but the Japanese then took it and used that as the base for the franchise going forward.

My problem is that I don't believe the modern action movie producing Hollywood studios can do justice to something like Robotech.  I mean it is a story based around Japanese characters who fight a multi generational war, deal with coming of age issue, racial prejudice, the horrors of war, and issues of personal loyalty.  Yes I know a lot of that stuff was added by US producers, my point is that given that this will be a series and each movie will have to make back a budget that is sure to be over two hundred million dollars and it will have to do well in china which means that it will have to have very little dialog and mostly be made up of explotions, I really don't think it will be able to keep what makes Robotech Robotech intact.

Also it is being brought to us by the studio who's poor planing and script control just ran Spider-Man into the ground and Spider-man is a much easier story to bring to the big screen so I really have no hope for this.

Also as I noted above Hollywood has a spotty track record at best when it comes to bringing anything Japanese to the big screen. I bet they keep the Japanese character names but cast white actors in the roles.

I'm sorry but I really don't see this working out well.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say you're an awful human being and we'll never forgive you for this.

Just kidding.

I have basically no experience with Robotech, but it seems to be that a lot of anime americanizations have been in production at one point or another with nothing coming out of it. Evangelion, Akira, Battle Angel, Battle Royale, and a lot more. I wouldn't worry too much.

Has any American made movie based on an old anime actually made money? I enjoyed Speed Racer, but it's considered a box office failure.

Robotech's storyline is too lengthy and complex to boil down into a two hour action flick anyway. I could see a miniseries along the lines of the Battlestar Galactica reboot potentially working though.

I can't load youtube on my connection but I am talking about the original anime where the character designs and names had an Asian feel to them, given that it came from Japan.

I am just sick of the way Hollywood treats Asians, it is nothing short of 100% pure uncut racism.

How come Hollywood is fine with putting gay characters who are not stereotypes in everything but we still can't not find Asian or middle eastern characters who are not stereotypes.  You would think a group of people who has no problem with showing gay characters would not have such a prejudice against other minorities.  I guess the difference his a character can be gay and still be white.  Someone needs to launch a studio where all the top executives are either female or a minority so those groups can start getting a fair shake in American made films and TV series.

Hollywood should not pollute anime by making film adaptations.

Anime is plenty polluted on its own, thank you very much.

Okay let me rephrase. It should not pollute unpolluted anime.
