Info & Help Wanted: on adding 35mm Film Grain...

I am new to this forum and to producing and preserving movies of all sorts (mainly horror). I am confident with my editing skills and ability to create a fully authored BD, however I have learned that there are ways to improve the quality of a movie file (in this case, the file is in an MKV/M2TS format) by simply adding 35mm film grain to the file. This is one area I am not an expert in nor familiar with. If there is anyone out there reading this now that would like to offer me some pointers and/or assistance, I welcome your input with open arms. Thanks for taking the time to read this 😃

Avisynth: Overlay the grain plate with softlight and adjust the opacity to taste.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

Agreed. It works particularly well if you have a DNR'd-to-hell source that still has macroblocking.

Thanks everyone! A few more questions. Do I need a specific type of grain plate? I notice the one I had linked is a .MOV grain plate. Where can I find a .MKV or .M2TS grain plate? Also, are there any step-by-step tutorials I can refer to for this?

You could always make a lossless avi from the .mov.

Is there anyone willing to do a live chat and go through this process with me step by step? I just want to make sure that what I am doing is correct and it would save a lot of time and probably a lot of mistakes if someone familiar with my request would be willing to teach me. First: thanks to AntcuFaalb for the idea of using the grainplate; kudos!

I used a grainplate on The Arrival, and final result is good, in particular because there were almost no grain in the BD I used as source...

I added a grainplate also for the replacing shots of AVP:R taken from the DVD, to be similar to the BD.

Visit fanres.com and sign up; there are very interesting topics there, and I don't exclude to write an article about grainplate sooner or later!
