FLORIDA – 12:45 p.m.

As reported by Election Protection:

This is a summation from some of the calls to the Election Protection Hotline, 1-866-OUR VOTE, and some of the reports from the field.

In Pinellas County, Fla. callers report that individuals purporting to be from the Kerry campaign are going door-to-door handing out absentee ballots, and asking voters to fill them out, and then taking the ballots from them, saying "Vote here for Kerry. Don't bother going to the polls."

A field attorney in Miami-Dade, Florida, reports that the wait at one precinct is over 3 hours. That attorney also reports that twelve cars with disabled voters have been waiting for over two hours to be able to vote, and that only two poll workers have been assisting the disabled voters, which has led to this delay.

OHIO – 11:30 a.m.

Deanna Zandt, who is in the Election Protection offices in Columbus, Ohio reports that some precincts are reporting a 80% turnout rate in Columbus. Some of the precincts, she reports, have a 3+ hour-long wait.

Deanna says that there have been reports from election protection officials that there is some voter intimidation going on. She has heard that groups of Republican-backed intimidators have been walking up and down voter lines, misleading voters about their eligibiity to vote and telling them that they need to vote in another precinct.

FLORIDA – 8 p.m.

In Broward County in Florida, two voters complained that when they tried to select for Kerry, the electronic machine kept selecting for Bush. After several tries they were able to select their chosen candidate.

I'd be very curious to hear the beginning and end of Bush's sentence... I'd warn anyone to be wary of taking quotes out of context because, for instance, Michael Moore quoted Orson Wells to support Farenheit 911 when in fact Wells was almost diametrically opposed to Moore in what he was writing. There's any number of ways Bush could have ended that sentence to change it's meaning... perhaps he's not too concerned about Bin Laden launching another attack? Perhaps he's not concerned about Bin Laden affecting the politics of Afghanistan?

Anyway, cutting off a sentence in the middle by no way catches Bush stating that Bin Laden is no concern at all. Maybe he did say that, but the way the video was edited forces me to assume that the editor was hiding something to make his own point.

That said, for better or for worse, the election is over. We can all hunker down and see how it turns out now.

I believe you mean George Orwell. And while it is true that George Orwell was in opposition to liberal thought his writings show an extraordinarily prescient world the rules of which can be applied to the Patriot Act 2 and the Bush 2 aministration.

Quote

Responding to a suggestion Kerry made that Bush lost his focus on capturing Osama bin Laden, the president said, "Gosh, I just don't think I ever said I'm not worried about Osama bin Laden."

Although Kerry didn't provide the full context, in March 2002, Bush said:

"I truly am not that concerned about him," Bush said of bin Laden, according to a White House transcript. "I know he is on the run. I was concerned about him when he had taken over a country."

Here is the exact question asked to Bush and his answer:

Q But don't you believe that the threat that bin Laden posed won't truly be eliminated until he is found either dead or alive?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, as I say, we haven't heard much from him. And I wouldn't necessarily say he's at the center of any command structure. And, again, I don't know where he is. I -- I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him. I know he is on the run. I was concerned about him, when he had taken over a country. I was concerned about the fact that he was basically running Afghanistan and calling the shots for the Taliban.

But once we set out the policy and started executing the plan, he became -- we shoved him out more and more on the margins. He has no place to train his al Qaeda killers anymore. And if we -- excuse me for a minute -- and if we find a training camp, we'll take care of it. Either we will or our friends will. That's one of the things -- part of the new phase that's becoming apparent to the American people is that we're working closely with other governments to deny sanctuary, or training, or a place to hide, or a place to raise money.

And we've got more work to do. See, that's the thing the American people have got to understand, that we've only been at this six months. This is going to be a long struggle. I keep saying that; I don't know whether you all believe me or not. But time will show you that it's going to take a long time to achieve this objective. And I can assure you, I am not going to blink. And I'm not going to get tired. Because I know what is at stake. And history has called us to action, and I am going to seize this moment for the good of the world, for peace in the world and for freedom.

I'm well aware of the dangers of taking a quote or an action or photograph out of context and using it to make an inductive leap to illustrate a point but the fact is that Bush still said what Kerry asserted that he said.

Anyway you're right the election is over and it's time to stock up on nuclear winter provisions and crucifixes in case of random inspections by Holy officers enforcing, an as yet theoretical, "Christian Act" legislation.

That statement, Reg, proves beyond doubt that you don't understand Christians. We don't seek to force anyone to convert, we don't kill anyone who chooses to reject Christ. But you're fear alone is proof enough that Christ is who he said He was--if he was just some crazy Jew, why does He bother you so much?

Why don't you direct your fear and hate at those who deserve it? Like those who both would and do maim and kill in the name of their god?

Tetchy little selfrighteous godbotherer aren't you?

Your beliefs don't concern me one whit but mine certainly seem to irritate the living heck out of you.

The intention of my barb was not hate rather fun and satire but you sir have no sense of humour.

I have no fear of your bedtime stories, only your government's reliance on them as anything of substance.

"Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person's enemies will be those of his own household" - Matthew 10

Anyone who believes in truth must therefore believe in falsehood. Peace-lovers therefore must dismiss truth, for any adherence to "truth" breeds conflict. A Peacemaker does not avoid conflict, but rather address conflict when it arises in a way that pursues reconciliation and lays the foundation for a secure peace, rather than the absence of conflict. As another Christian, I do not fear the conflict but I long for the resolution and fear my own ability to address it in a Godly way.

The fact that there is division over this issue of war and over this presidency by no means proves that Bush is being led by God or proves the validity of Jesus' words. That would be a hollow argument. But believing that Jesus is the truth and what he spoke is true, and believing that Bush is a Godly man, seeing divisiveness flow out of it does not surprise me. Doesn't mean that Bush is infallible and absolutely does not mean that everything America does is right; that's preposterous. But I think even where we fail we are working towards good and good will come out of it. In a fallen world things have to be broken to be put together better.

The breaking is always a tragedy and the deaths that result will never ever be a good thing. But I put my hope in what God can accomplish. Even with impure tools, with a fallible president, corrupt global politics, and the evil of war.

Sorry to bring more religion into a political debate. And I know not everyone agrees with that. But like I said, believing that any Truth exists necessarily divides the world.

Well... I think Darth Chaltab's signature sums it all: "I find your lack of faith disturbing. And hilarious. But mostly disturbing"

That was half a reference to Reg, and half a day-dream about what SW would have been like if Jim Carrey had played Darth Vader.

Also, this would be a good time to point out that for satire to be funny, it has to have at least a small degree of truth to it. That's why Reg isn't laugh-a-minute hilarious.

"Mosh"

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
And to the Republic for which it stands
One nation under God
Indivisible...
It feels so good to be back..

I scrutinize every word, memorize every line
I spit it once, refuel and re-energize and rewind
I give sight to the blind, my insight through the mind
I exercise my right to express when I feel it's time
It's just all in your mind, what you interpret it as
I say to fight, you take it as I'mma whip someone's ass
If you don't understand, don't even bother to ask
A father who has grown up with a fatherless past
Who has blown up now to rap phenomenon that has
Or at least shows no difficulty multi-task
And in juggling both perhaps mastered his craft
Slash entrepreneur who has held onto few more rap acts
Who's had a few obstacles thrown his way through the last half
Of his career typical manure moving past that
Mr. kisses ass crack, he's a class act
Rubber band man, yea he just snaps back

[Chorus:]
Come along follow me as I lead through the darkness
As I provide just enough spark that we need to proceed
Carry on, give me hope, give me strength
Come with me and I won't steer you wrong
Put your faith and your trust as I guide us through the fog
To the light at the end of the tunnel
We gonna fight, we gonna charge, we gonna stomp, we gonna march
Through the swamp, we gonna mosh through the marsh
Take us right through the doors (c'mon)

All the people up top on the side and the middle
Come together lets all bomb and swamp just a little
Just let it gradually build from the front to the back
All you can see is a sea of people some white and some black
Don't matter what color, all that matters we gathered together
To celebrate for the same cause don't matter the weather
If it rains let it rain, yea the wetter the better
They ain't gonna stop us they can't, we stronger now more than ever
They tell us no we say yea, they tell us stop we say go
Rebel with a rebel yell, raise hell we gonna let em know
Stomp, push, shove, mush, Fuck Bush, until they bring our troops home (c'mon)

[Chorus]

Imagine it pouring, it's raining down on us
Mosh pits outside the oval office
Someone's tryina tell us something,
Maybe this is god just sayin' we're responsible
For this monster, this coward,
That we have empowered
This is Bin Laden, look at his head noddin'
How could we allow something like this without pumping our fists
Now this is our final hour
Let me be the voice in your strength and your choice
Let me simplify the rhyme just to amplify the noise
Try to amplify the times it, and multiply by six...
Teen million people, Are equal at this high pitch
Maybe we can reach alqueda through my speech
Let the president answer a higher anarchy
Strap him with an Ak-47, let him go, fight his own war
Let him impress daddy that way
No more blood for oil, we got our own battles to fight on our own soil
No more psychological warfare, to trick us to thinking that we ain't loyal
If we don't serve our own country, we're patronizing a hero
Look in his eyes its all lies
The stars and stripes, they've been swiped, washed out and wiped
And replaced with his own face, Mosh now or die
If I get sniped tonight you know why,
Cause I told you to fight.

[Chorus]

And as we proceed,
To Mosh through this desert storm,
In these closing statements, if they should argue
Let us beg to differ
As we set aside our differences
And assemble our own army
To disarm this Weapon of Mass Destruction
That we call our President, for the present
And Mosh for the future of our next generation
To speak and be heard
Mr. President, Mr. Senator
Do you guy's hear us...hear us...[laughing] (Hailie)

Did you have to revive this thread, Rik? Why not just let it die? The election's over.

And how in the crap are those the words of a Patriot? A patriot says "I regret that I have but one life to give my country" not "Let him fight his own war".
