I had looked around for a plug-in to handle "ringing" or, more accurately, "edge-enhancement haloing" (that's sharpening done the wrong way).

Try anything you find on this monster. :-D

WTF

That is the coolest test pattern, ever! Where did you find it?

It's on the Pioneer Reference LD: GGV1069. You can still purchase a copy new from Pioneer.

This particular image is from a capture happycube did of GGV1069 with his Pioneer LD-V8000 to show its considerable ringing.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Interesting. The V8000 was supposed to be a pretty good industrial model.

If only Pioneer still had a player in their product line.

This capture looks pretty nice for an LD rip.

Only issue is that while the aspect ratio displays correctly in VLC, it doesn't on my TV. I assume its just the display ratio which has been corrected.

How do I change the ratio without re-encoding/quality loss?

Unfortunately, the project wasn't made ready for playback to TV (not properly letterbox'ed). You must add such a letterbox and then re-encode. As csd79 noted, that shouldn't be much of a quality problem ..

But I did the MKV with a high bitrate so anyone who wants to alter it or convert it to DVD or whatever can have a good starting point.

If that is not good enough, one could use his raw capture (if available), and his posted Avisynth scripts & resources (page 1), to recreate the project with a TV-friendly letterbox.

I tried playing it on a dedicated media player connected to my TV (as opposed to the player on the TV itself) and it seens to honour the display aspect ratio setting. So that's good enough for me.

Thanks Space Ranger for the tip, I may wish to encode it properly in future.
