I haven't watched SNL regularly since Phil Hartman was on there, so I didn't know anything about the 40th anniversary episode until it was over.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Really?  I thoroughly enjoyed it.  My only problem was the musical numbers fell flat (outside of Marty and Bobbi and Bill Murray).

I died at Celebrith Jeopardy, but that's always been a favorite of mine.

"Suck it, Trebek!" I wonder if they ever tried to get Connery to host? ;)

I forgot about this and only caught the last hour. The memorial tribute was touching and surprising. (Was all the bad blood between SNL and Andy Kaufman just a put on?) Not to mention one heck of a fake out at the end.

Did Mr. Bill put in an appearance?

SNL's been lame for decades.

If I had a nickel for every time I've heard that since 1980! ;)

Well, I did lose interest in SNL following the Aykroyd/Belushi years, so I guess you could call me a purist detractor. ;-P

The show was a disaster area after Lorne Michaels and what was left of the original cast departed, but even those desolate years gave us the likes of Eddie Murphy. Back when he was truly funny. ;)

I'm hoping some of the 40th anniversary hoopla translates into more seasons being released on DVD.

I'm so tired I could practically just lay down and go to sleep.  I can't remember the last time I did that!

Yeah unless the skit has Phil Hartman in it, I don't care about it.

Well I guess there's nothing to do but walk around and bump into walls then.

man am I embarrassed.  My 8 year old niece killed me at checkers.   My only defense is that I hadn't played checkers in years.   But it is still humiliating.

The 40th anniversary's only funny moments where the rehashes of past funny skits. I'd see a new one with Fred Armisan or Jimmy Fallon and:

^Lol.

I thought the special wasn't half bad.  We did skip through the half that was bad, however.  Come to think of it, I guess it was half bad.

I still don't understand why we haven't named this "The SNL Thread" :P

 Fixed that for ya!

I thought the special was pretty good. Obviously you can't please everyone. I personally thought they should have ditched the musical guests, amongst other things, but overall I found it satisfactorily funny and nostalgic.

When you're doing a tribute show specifically about the legacy of a program, that's about what I'd want out of it if I were producer.  After all, it's hard to top a return of Celebrity Jeopardy; that's one of my favorite recurring sketches of all time.  Bill Murray's Jaws theme was fantastic, too, but I thought the entire set-up of the musical moments montage was poor.  I also liked the audience Q&A, but mostly due to Larry David's appearance.  We totally got screwed with Eddie Murphy, though.  After that huge intro Chris Rock gave, I was hoping Eddie would at least crack a few jokes, but all we got was a cliche thank-you speech.

I wish it were a little less clip-show heavy, but at the same time I also get why they did that.  Just wish they had saved it for the Players who are unfortunately no longer with us.

Was I the only one who was more upset about the fact that Paul McCartney can hardly sing anymore? Yeah, I guess being in your early 70's has a lot to do with that, but I grew up with this guy, and always held him in high regard as a singer.

He can't be as bad as Bob Dylan and Stevie Nicks have become.

...

Can he?

Yeah.  I've seen him put on a good show for other performances, but he was wailing and having a hard time holding his notes.  I hope it was just a bad night!

Also, how bad has Stevie Nicks gotten?  You've got me curious.  I know she didn't quite hold onto her looks (though she's looking pretty well nowadays), but I didn't know she'd lost her range.

It doesn't help that Paul was singing a song that was rougher on his voice as a younger man. Maybe if he'd sung Blackbird or Mull of Kintyre, it wouldn't have been so shaky. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that he only performed one song, I'm not a professional singer by any means, but I gotta sing about 10 minutes ahead of time, or I sound pretty bad. It's the same with guitar. You gotta get the blood flowing and the muscles warmed up.

Bob on the other hand, hasn't sounded "good" in years. Many argue that he never did, but I think his vocal chops were pretty solid in the late 60's to up around the 80's. He started doing that weird raspy blues thing in the 90's. His latest album has touches of the younger Bob Dylan, but for the most part, it's kind of too late. I hear from a lot of folks that he doesn't care anymore, but I think if that was the case, he wouldn't even perform.

Don't worry. When I was about 12 years old, I played morris with my uncle and by the time we had all pieces set, I completely confined him and he couldn't make a single move. At this time I played morris with everyone who didn't run away :D When kids really focus on something it's hard to keep up with them.
