We mentioned it in other threads. Quite awhile ago, we upgraded all our equipment. We currently have a full sized 35mm projector, and an pro camera that can do 4k resolutions at 24fps. We have been slowly redoing our scans with that equipment.

To answer other questions, I doubt we will be using any new codecs that are not standard to most people.
We have had many people have issues even with h.264 mp4 files.
As mentioned, we have a customized rig which takes the projected image and captures it with a 4k pro camera at 24fps.
We are using off the shelf commercial and pro Image software from Adobe, Avid, and other companies that make professional restoration software.
The basic files are converted losslessly to other formats to save space and distributed. The reels have been split up between team members.
From there each frame is individually cleaned for dirt and scratches, but if they were originally in the film, those artifacts will be kept.
We have been at it for 2 years, and are still working on the last few reels.
Sorry about being vague on any specifics, but really there will be more work once the cleanup phase is done. We're looking at cropping, scene by scene color correction, and stabilization by the time we are done.
Current progress is being tracked at reddit, under AMPSdeux.
There are sample clips being posted along with other information concerning the print.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the 35mm projector?
I own one myself, however it's an incredibly old silent home one from the twenties, still runs very well though.

Many theaters are getting rid of their projectors and going digital. If you look around you might even get them for free, if you can haul them away.
That is how we acquired ours.

That last comment makes me feel sad. I myself love film projectors and watching a movie in 3-strip Cinerama and 70mm film are my only remaining assignments to complete my Cinematic experience.

By 3-strip Cinerama, do you mean the original 3 camera setup? Does that exist anywhere?

I once read there are still a few of those the States and some European countries, and for some reason the one I remember best is one in Seattle which yes, is the original 3-projector setup.

I saw Blade Runner in 70mm at the Cinerama when I lived in Seattle, but I wasn't aware they had a 3-projector system. Very cool if they do.

Just as another note, the different LPP prints have a different tint for the same scenes.
Some are blue, some are green. With color adjustment they can be matched. So we can still judge what they should look like.
The 16mm version should be close to matching also.

BTW, I myself made a few adjustments to the Grindhouse edition to bring out the blue(i.e. Luke's lightsaber is supposed to be blue yet it appears green) and noticed many scenes have slightly green tint.

I enjoyed Star Wars in 70mm back in 1977. Good movie.

Looks like the theater I went to was in fact showing it in 70mm.

I wonder how accurate that list really is. I saw Jedi on opening day in Ventura California, and I can't think of any theater there that was ever called the Metropolitan. There were only three theaters operating in town at the time.

One of our members has a few dedicated machines to use for rendering and clean up of our 2 prints of Jedi.
We will be assembling a private version to preview how it looks to estimate which sequences will need the most work.
We will try to post some comparison clips when we have a chance.
As far as helping Harmy out goes, it goes both ways, as he will be assisting us also with the work.

Why not release a ~3.5K version along with a 1080p? This is the real advantage of having the 35mm negs.

The majority of their scans are in 2k, I believe.

No, all of our latest scans are 4k, and we have redone some of our earlier ones. So now the majority of them are in 4k.
We don't have a workflow for anything higher than 1080p currently. But we are considering future proofing so that when the time, equipment and space requirements are better, we can work with them at that point.
The vast majority of people can not view, or have machines that are capable of watching 4k video on computers, or their TV's yet.

We are currently working on a preview of the Lapti Nek scene, and later the Sarlacc pit scene.
So far the work in progress looks great, as there is not much damage on this print (version 1).
