Technology isn't quite there yet. Sky Captain is close with its digitally recreated Sir Laurence Olivier, but still not quite there.

Really? I haven't seen Sky Captain yet, there is a CGI Laurence Olivier on it? Blasphemy!

Hell, I didn't notice Laurence Olivier in Sky Captain at all. When did that happen?

Calm down. I just went to IMDB to check this out...

There is no CGI Lawrense Oliver, but TotenKopf is played by archive footage of Oliver--the face in between the tesla coils, the face on the photographs, and the video on the rocket's control panel at the end are archival footage CG-composited into the new movie...

It's the name of the villian.

For those who don't speak German, Toten is dead and kopf is head.

For those are slow, the name translates to Deadhead.

Oh crap...

I guess that spoils about the only plot twist in the movie for anyone who speaks German....


SPOILER ALERT









The villain, Dr. Deadhead, is actually dead since 20 years before the movie begins, with his operation being run by his android daughter, and all one ever sees is his head, Twice in a photograph, In a Video, and the coolest of all, as an electrically projected image suspended betwen two Tesla coils.

After 4 years of German in high school, I remember very little.

But I will not forget the word 'Tote' because of a friends fascination with the German rock band 'Tote Hosen', which translated (if you need it) is 'Dead Pants'.

Archival footage was used for the modeling of the character, but the footage in the film is indeed digitally created based on the archival footage.

Not sure I've seen this gaffe mentioned, but the lightsaber screw-ups weren't exclusive to vader and Luke...



Is it not purple in several shots? The hell??

I do see purple, but only near where the 2 blades intersect. The farther towards the end of Obi-wan's blade I look, the less purple it looks.

I'm late to this discussion, but I'd like to comment...

Regarding Vader's line about the power of the force being greater than the Death Star (ability to destroy a planet): I believe this to be Lucas' way of foreshadowing the eventual destruction of the Death Star at the hands of Luke Skywalker, as he uses the "power of the force" to prove Vader correct.

See, Vader isn't saying "Mine's bigger than yours!" He's saying that, yes, planets are big and all that, and if you can destroy one, that's great and all, but the force is the energy of all living things, and nothing can ever be greater than that. That's sorta the point of the movie, that the power we living beings possess is greater than whatever "technological terror" we may face, because we can affect change through our will, and that's what Luke does.

There's more to say, but it's late. But I will say Vader's line probably contains the last subtlety Lucas ever wrote. That's more of a lament than a slam.
