I really don't have any preference over directors. I think generally people give way to much credit to directors (especially when they aren't screenwriters).

For me the crucial things that determines the film are the story and screenplay, and in some cases visual design too (for example H.R. Giger for Alien; McQuarrie and Johnston for OT).

The primary things that concern the director, i.e. acting, camera work and on-set details, are really secondary to me when it comes to determining whether I will like the film or not.

I don't believe the question was "Do you care about directors".

:P

I agree that the story and screenplay should be assigned maximum importance.

But it takes a good director to translate it to the screen.

So many great ones.

Spielberg, Scorcese, Hitchcock, and Kubrick are my definite favorites. Then there's guys like Kurosawa, Leone, Tarantino, Nolan, Anderson (both PT and Wes but much more so the former) that have always made great stuff. Then there's other greats like Wilder, Capra, Welles, Bergman, Hawks, etc. Man, I could spend all day listing my faves. I'll try to think of a more coherent list.

GL rates very high on my list.

AmGraf and SW are the closest one could have gotten to perfect, for what they are and the extent they were financed. He should only direct movies with ridiculously low budgets, considering what is required.

He oversaw the California end of the directing in ESB, and supervised much of the overall directing of ROTJ.

The PT was spectacular and an awesome technical achievement, though it had great inconsistencies with the OT in screenplay and FX.

So basically, you like reading books.

I'm pretty sure this thread is for naming your favorite directors, not for saying whether or not you care about directors.

Really there are too many to list here.  I will try to narrow down the list to something that will not take up half the page before posting here.

In that case, what you said was complete nonsense.

Not really. Screenplay is not a book. It is a blueprint for a film. And what happened to the part where I said I am into visual design as well?

I don't believe the question was "Do you care about directors".

The reasonable options to answer that question would be "yes or "no".

The reasonable answer to the current thread's question would be "Joe, Bob and Rob" or "I have no preference". I went for the later as that is my opinion and added some explanation as a bonus...
