While George Lucas could be considered as having been the first to have created 'fan edits' of his saga, the guy that came up with 'The Phantom Edit' surely sealed the deal...

He was mistaken about what "GOUT" means (while he got the acronym right, he seems to think it means the original version of the films, not the 2006 DVD in particular), but otherwise it was a very well-researched and interesting essay. Definitely worth the read.
