Help: looking for... 1997 Special Edition Trilogy 5.1 Audio?

Hi all,

Can anyone steer me to where I might find some kind of high quality 5.1 surround versions of the '97 SE trilogy audio? I need them primarily for the music & SFX during the celebration scene in ROTJ, sans Naboo and the “Weesa free!” business found on the 2004 DVD and 2011 Blu-ray.

Any leads would be appreciated!

Thanks

Not a helpful comment, but I love the 1997 SE mix of ANH.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

The raw WAVs for the Theatrical DTS audio of the 97 Special Edition trilogy are up on myspleen.

Thanks a lot guys. Really appreciate it.

Schorman - Is there any way possible that you could make a torrent for just the '97 SEs? Those are the only ones I really need, and at the current rate of download, it's going to take all night just to download ONE of the three movies' files...

Just set your torrent program to only download the 97 ac3 files.

Just a thought.

Has any one attempted to Despecializ the 1997 DTS Audio?

I've given it some thought, and haven't ruled it out entirely, but my current feeling is that it's probably more trouble than it's worth, due to the complexity and sheer number of edits that would be required.  ESB and RotJ would be easier, but despecializing the '97 version of SW would be a fairly gargantuan task.

It's worth considering whether the 1997 DTS Cinema mix is preferable to the newest, 2011 mix.  If anyone really wanted to "despecialize" the soundtracks, the 2011 mixes would be significantly easier to work with, for most people, and offer discrete LFE and surround channels.

Interesting.

I was thinking  the 1997 DTS Cinema mix would be best as it has stuff like

ANH Original Krayt Dragon Call
ESB original Emperor, voice and the original Boba Fett voice
ROTJ would have no. “No Nooooo!”

As far as I know, the 2004/2011 mixes for Star Wars Ep 4 are trainrecks, so the 1997 DTS mix would be best there. It doesn't matter as much for ESB and ROTJ, and the 2004/2011 mixes for those film use the 1997 mix as a base.

Nah.  The '97 version of SW has the advantage of being derived from the original 4-track master, with additional changes piled on top of it—meaning that all the parts of the mix that haven't been changed still sound the same as they did back in 1977.

The Bluray audio, on the other hand, is just a spruced up version of the DVD release, which was remixed from scratch and has no resemblance to the original whatsoever.  Even if I didn't hate the way it sounded, I'd never be able to justify using something so completely different and calling it 'despecialized'.

Slight differences in content aside, the blu ray mixes are probably the best starting point for anyone attempting a new mix due to the format itself.  It has discrete channels and is lossless, two things the cinema discs aren't.

Slight differences?  It's like you didn't read the post above yours.

True dat Frink, those posts weren't there when I started typing.  Just saw them now.

Anyway, my point still stands.  For most folks correctly decoding the 97 cinema discs will be a challenge.

FWIW, I think despecializing the audio is a little pointless, anyway.  There are enough legit mixes as it is, and H_H's purist/70mm mixes are more than adequate as a Multichannel alternative.

My bad, I didn't notice the timing of the posts.
