Though I still think it could be a good idea to get the original Japanese release, for a non-time-compressed mono track.

I can get the original JP LD from Japan for $50 ($26 in S&H, ugh...), but I'm short on cash right now, so I can't get it unless people want to donate or something...

This was released at one point.  I've got it.  It's wonderful.

The mono track is just terrific too.  Made the film much more authentic, scary, and enjoyable.

I should say it's not without faults: the person who did this did add their own credit to the titles and credits in a way I find a bit obtrusive.

They did restore the red WB logo too...which is a HUGE plus in my book.

This fanedit was actually discussed over on blu-ray.com, and the general consensus was that this fanedit was terrible. I took a look at it myself, and I agree, It is sickly green, and like many others, I have a hard time believing that those were the original colors. It is highly questionable in my opinion. And the compression was awful on the mkv. He also slapped his name all over the edit - a very poor idea to feed his ego. I deleted it after just jumping around a bit.

He is not the only one on these forums that does that, I really, really hate that to, this is why you will never see this on our covers or our BD presentations, to me it really takes away and I do not even want it anymore.

I managed to get it for a total of $32 (including S&H!). Expect a capture of the monomix sometime soon!

a/ As previously mentioned, I have recalled/deleted this release, in profit of a completely new preservation I've been working on for close to a year, based on a 1974 35mm print I acquired since releasing this now discontinued preservation.

b/ @dark-jedi: no need to spew your venom, you've copiously made your point already in other threads too. Yes, I had added "a Dr Sapirstein Preservation" to the main title, which had nothing to do with "ego" and everything to do with the fact that I was pissed off to see some of my releases being sold online while they were meant to be free downloads. I understand some can find this one tag a tad intrusive - it hasn't appeared and will not appear on any other release - but you can keep this snotty remark to yourself. And "we will never see this on your releases and covers"? Good for you. At least my releases are available.

c/ The 79 Laserdisc doesn't feature the original 1973 Mono mix, no commercial release of THE EXORCIST does.

docsap, I'm really glad you are reworking The Exorcist. One of my favourite movies of all time so looking forward to this.

Would be interesting to know what mix is contained on AntcuFaalb's Japanese LD.

I am intent upon buying it because it is one of my all time favorite movies.

Well, not soon, but I am capturing right now. I plan to release this with the 5.1 70mm mix from the 1997 DVD and the 2.0 (down?)mix from the other side.

I am now 100% convinced that this is the original mono mix. Cue marks are present that indicate a 35mm release print (nobody was scanning 70mm in the LD days) and since LD supports stereo audio there'd be no reason to fold down a 2.0 source. Score!

Docsap did say he's working on restoring a 35mm version he's had scanned, so it may be that he has the original optical mono audio and knows how it sounds, or it may be that he's aware of what was inserted or changed in the Laserdisc (if indeed there was anything done to it to alter it).

The links are up on AMPS in the Project Resources thread. PM me if you want them, but don't want to join AMPS.

It would be awesome if someone were to sync the mono mix to the BD.

Enjoy!

Great news AntcuFaalb! I might sync it to the 1997 DVD if you haven't already?

Thanks

Capturing. Yes, theatrical.

This can't be a bit perfect rip because this LD has no digital sound. It's one of the early ones with analog sound only: http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/44957/10JL-1007

The other two are, of course, bit perfect because they're the AC-3 tracks from the 1997 DVD. I demuxed them twice off the DVD and compared checksums to make sure I got a perfect copy of each.

Still interested?

I have both the original PAL and the NTSC DVDs. I can upload the PAL version to a tracker if you would like?

(edit to add...) The PAL version was released in 1999, not 1997.

PAL: Is the matte opened more on the fullscreen side or is the resolution actually higher? I'd be interested in doing a comparison with my NTSC copy, sure.

I've never done a side-by-side comparison, I don't know if it was converted to PAL from NTSC, scanned separately in a telesync (like the GOUT ROTJ was), or converted from PAL to NTSC. I'll have a look shortly and post some screenshots.

I have put it on demonoid. There is slightly more picture than the NTSC version (except of course for the introduction shot which is simply cropped differently), and the contrast is higher (hence crushed blacks). Generally the PAL version has a bit more detail (see screenshot 3 e.g. lampshade and seat, or screenshot 4 wallpaper).

Is there actually movement on this one?

Just today I was thinking "I should re-edit the best bits of the extended cut back into the theatrical cut" today for my personal use, and started ripping my blurays in order to do so...

But if someone's working on a restoration already I may not bother.

Between the flipper DVD with the 70mm 6-track in 5.1 DD and the Blu-Ray, what is so horrid with any given presentation of the Exorcist that it needs to be preserved with 25GB (or larger) Blu-Ray.

Seems like this thread went off track a little and perhaps others will chime in. Also, there may be other posts however the 2 replies quoted below seem to be the most informative.

DVDBeaver does a good job on this title and I like the Alt. Cut PQ, especially because of the flash frame on the door. http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompare5/exorcist.htm

disclord on LDDb claims that the 5.1 audio on the 1997 DVD is the original 70mm mix. Does the Blu-ray use this?

This Blu-Ray actually removes a few of the digital tweaks that were added to the Extended version...

...

The problem with the theatrical version is that its sound remix is not as robust as the Extended version...
