Help Wanted: missing 3P0 line wav required

 (Edited)

can anyone e-mail me the missing 3P0 line of tractor beam dialogue that isn’t present on the DE LD’s?

can it be a 48hz stereo wav file and can you indicate if it was obtained from a PAL or NTSC source please. I’d like to splice it into the dialogue AC3 of my project. I’ve already spliced in the blast doors line but need to the Threepio line to be complete.

mail to : lancer@dial.pipex.com

Here you go (1.05 MB)

this is a ZIP file containing a PCM uncompressed WAV, which I extracted from the 2.0 audio track on my R1 NTSC DVD (official, yes, I caved and bought it ;-__-)

If you could rip it from the center channel of the AC3 file, it would cut out a lot of ambient sound effects (not that there are many in the scene to begin with.)

From my experience that doesn't work very well in ANH. Prolly a side effect of the screwed-up 5.1 mixing. (I tried to delete the music from the Jabba scene)

Well, send me the segment with C3PO, and I can do it for you. Besides, the scene you refer to is very noisy. Just because AC3 has discrete sound channels doesn't mean the same sound can't be found in more than one channel.

Hmmm *blush* haven't got the DVD yet. a little thing called redundancy got in the way of things this week dammit. so I've been teasing the filters instead, trying to get a bit more sharpness out of my file.

@ molly, got the file thanks, haven't listened to it yet but I'll pick it apart later and splice it into my source wav shortly.

BTW. when people talk about PCM uncompressed sound, we're talking about the wav file aren't we? I mean pre AC3'ing in Bewsweet. considered better because its uncompressed.

and therefore only worth considering when you can burn dual layer because it's not worth giving up 30% of a DVD-Rs single layer 4.5GB storage space for sound.

PS, molly, is that from a PAL or NTSC source? I ask because mine is NTSC and I need to know in case I need to fiddle it to match.

In my above post I said it was from an R1 NTSC source.

sorry, I'm an idiot who obviously can't read. it's been one of those days.
thanks again,

BTW I presume the consistent chugging sound in the background is ambient sound effects as the machinery in the scene shows the schematics. it's not very clear on my DE LD's.

Not necessarily. The DVD has a PCM and a DD soundtrack. When you extract a WAV from an AC3 file, the resulting PCM file is not identical to the PCM file already on the DVD.

DVD ---> PCM = pure uncompressed

DVD ---> AC3 ---> PCM = a truncated PCM file from the AC3 file, which uses lossy compression.

Just compare the file sizes and you'll see. There are some DVDs, like Young Guns, where the PCM soundtrack actually has better depth and "surroundness" than the AC3 soundtrack.

so if I use my original capture Wav file as a sound stream on my dvd, that could sound better than the converted AC3 file?

I think you're confusing people, MeBeJedi. There is no PCM track on the ANH DVD, only 448k 5.1 DD and a 192 2.0 DD. Niether one is going to give you an uncompressed PCM track.

The captured PCM audio off the LD will probably give you better sound quality. I would recommend getting the center channel dialogue off the DVD's 5.1 track and mixing that in. That should give you the best sound quality, even if you decide to compress it down to DD or DTS audio later.

Edit: Do you still need the isolated center dialoge from the 5.1 track? If so, I'll put it up for you to download.

Well, it depends. If you mean the "AC3 file converted to PCM", then my point was that the original PCM file from the DVD would have more information than the PCM file extracted from the AC3 file. That being said, the center channel from the AC3 file will have less ambient noise, so it kinda depends on which is more important to you - better overall soundtrack fidelity (PCM), or better separation for the isolated sound byte (center AC3 extracted to PCM). You might do both to see which sounds better.

What I intend to do is extract the PCM file from the LD, run it through a Pro-Logic II emulation program, isolate the center dialogue, and use that for the '77 DVD version I'm planning on making.

Sorry, you're right. I keep thinking the PCM track is mandatory. I'd sure like to know when that was changed.

I'd be interested in getting it zion. molly's version is fine, I've mixed it all in etc. but an laternative sound file would be interesting to compare and maybe splice in instead.

I've succumbed too. damn you MSU filter. nothing else comes close to it, I'm just a bit ticked off you can't change any of it's settings, and that they haven't optimised it. I know they haven't because on my 933 at home it does 1-2 fps, on my 1.7 athlon I had at work, it did 1-2 fps and on my new 2.8 P4 at home, it does 1-2 fps, which means, good as it is, it could be a lot better re: optimisations.

If you want to capture the file you self just take www.dvdshrink.org and rip you Star War DVD and burn it back yo DVD-R and capture the audio clip you need but play back the DD 2.0 sound track not the 5.1

@spider, I posted earlier that I haven't got the DVD yet, bit short of cash at moment otherwise I'd have just done that myself rather than ask for it.
