TFN is like Mos Eisley, only with the scum and villainy replaced with humourlessness and sycophancy.
No, this was before it became communist China. But me trying to start a discussion, albeit tongue-in-cheek, quickly spiraled downward.

The internet excitement/chatter/speculation/ect for Force Awakens made me have a flash back to before AOTC came out. I was on TF.N, somewhat trolling I suppose, when I started a thread about whether or not George Lucas was going to let Samuel L. Jackson say "motherf*cker" in the movie, since that was pretty much what he was known for saying in virtually every film. I guess you can assume what the response was.
Ha, I would like to read that. Is there a link to your post so I don't have to search through all the rubbish in the bin ?

Funny that they claim it's a coincidence.
You went to high school in that thing? You're braver than I thought.
This
was as bad as anything from the prequels and ruined what was otherwise a good episode.
Still not as bad as recasting Tim Curry for the role after the original actor passed away.
I haven't got that far into the show yet. I'm guessing Curry doesn't do a good Palpatine impression?
No, he does a great Tim Curry impression though!

As someone who didn't make it out of the early 1990's until a few years ago (hell, I still have/use a VCR), I have no knowledge of what TFN was like before about 2012. Was it once a website worth visiting? When did it become a dystopian 1984 type place?
The Person in Question
A lot of us still own a VCR around here. It's when you walk the DVD aisle at a store, muttering and cursing there are no movies to buy on VHS anymore, that it's time for therapy. ;)

That's why I shop at thrift stores. 99c tapes

I should have said new movies. ;)

It was always pretty bad, it's just that the "group think" got worse over time. I'm sure the other guys here can give you a better timeline. Again, this was about 13 years ago, but I made a mild bathroom humor thread in the off topic forum. It was deleted and I was told that there was no room for "potty humor" or whathaveyou on the boards since it was geared towards being family friendly. My argument that there's poop jokes IN THE F'ING MOVIES fell on deaf ears.
I own a DVD/VCR combo. I don't buy cassettes anymore, though, and I'm working towards replacing the ones I still have with DVDs.
My parents also still have a VCR connected to the old huge CRT in my brother's room and my little brother still watches a lot of old cartoons and stuff on VHS.
I was thinking about getting a second-hand VCR, because I thought it would be cool to be able to play some of my old Star Wars VHS tapes but my monitor only has HDMI and VGA, so I'd have no way to connect it.

Can't you get composite to VGA adapters, being that both ports are analog?

Only George is allowed to make poop jokes. ;)

There is another option...

I've seen these up close, and they seem well made. Certainly not the feather light 98% plastic of early 2000's decks. The only downside is mono sound only.

Perhaps a better question would be when did Star Wars in general become some kind of all or nothing thing? Was it with the Special Editions, was it with the prequels? Regardless of which, why did it happen? I mean, I remember plenty of people just agreeing to disagree about whether or not Jedi was an acceptable movie, but now it's like there is no debate even allowed to be had.

I'd say it started with the SE and finalized with the PT, when George started pouring his revisionist "I had it all planned out from the beginning" Kool-Aid with gusto; far too many people drank it up uncritically and allowed it to poison their systems.

Sure, but that wasn't the case with Return of the Jedi though. And I also don't recall (although I was completely out of the loop at the time) anyone being called 'fake' fans for any negative reception for Phantom Menace back in 1999-2000. It seemed like a lot of the dumb BS about "true fans" didn't show up until maybe around the time Episode III came out, and that truly is something that you only see on the internet, thankfully.
Do you think it was caused by the completely arrogant claims from Lucas claiming that he planned everything for decades and had a "vision" coupled with the unhealthy cult-leader worship that TFN people had for him? It would make sense I guess since I don't think there were any "true vision" speeches back when Jedi came out, making it OK for people to dislike it.

Yeah, that's what I think happened. Lucas became a messiah in their minds, and when confronted with evidence to the contrary, they became pseudo-religious zealots, treating each and every person who didn't buy into Lucas' vision like heretics worthy only of being burned at the stake.
Alright....which one of you is Patton? Fess up! =P
