When did you realize the Prequels sucked? — Page 7

I forget whether they showed Joe-Joe Binky or "Little Orphan Ani" first in The Random Premise, but the moment that one or the other opened its horrifying pie-hole first was the moment the true depths of shitasticism struck me deep in my core, and defiled my inner child once and for all.

When did you realize the Prequels sucked?

Simple, i walked out of the theatre thinking "i just saw a SW movie and i was bored WTF?"

When I joined this forum.  Just kidding.

I knew almost the moment I saw the Phantom Menace that it was not Star Wars.  I mean within the very first scene I knew this thing was going nowhere.

I kept giving the trilogy the chance to prove me wrong and in each case I was proven right.  Its the only trilogy in the history of trilogies where I think a great number of the fans knew at some point how bad it was going to suck and paid money just to be proven correct.

Ironically, this is what Disney knew when they bought the franchise.  It's got a built in fanbase that cannot be deterred.  That's not to say they aren't working in earnest to produce good films but they know there is no money loss in this venture.  They bought a business that cannot fail.

In my opinion, the prequels did not suck.  I enjoyed them as much as the OT and my favorite of the 6 is ROTS, but I love them all.  However, a number of people did not enjoy the PT for various reasons, so I accept that they are not for everybody.

I never thought much about the prequels, and the one I watched over and over again was Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. I saw Star Wars Episode I: A Phantom Menace and Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones both in the same evening on tape because I didn't really have money in the budget for theatre tickets in the late 90's early 2000's; I think I thought Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was just a lame kids movie, and I hated Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. I saw Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Jedi in theatres, and I thought it was ok. My opinion of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith hasn't really changed, and I do think it's the best of the prequels, even though that's not saying much. To this day, the only Star Wars movies that I like are Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hop3, The Wars Epiode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and Star Wars Episode VI: Blue Harvest.

I realized the prequels sucked as soon as the credits rolled in Phantom Menace.

I did go see all of them in the theater in the hopes that they'd get better, but that never happened.

The thing is I only saw the prequels each once in the theater and never again. With the original trilogy I went multiple times to the theater and still watch them on home video.

Well, it was pretty exhausting to type as well, but I wanted to call the movies by their official titles.

I realized the prequels sucked a few days before the premiere of TPM.

I was in a Walgreens and they had a huge tie-in merchandizing campaign, with the likeness of Jar-Jar, Anakin, or Darth Maul on almost every product you could imagine. There was a display with the film's children's storybook edition, and I took a glance at it. Right there and then I knew it was a total stinker.

I tried so, so hard to like them.  For Menace, it the first scene where the alien mouth movements don't match the words, and then didn't get any better.  I went to see it four more times to give it a good solid chance of growing on me.  It took nearly a decade for it to become the most "Star Wars" of the prequels.  "Star Wars" in a Jedi way

For Clones I camped for three days and it was a good time.  As much fun as the camp-out was, the movie itself?  The crowd at the theater I was at was dead silent walking out.  Some uncomfortable laughter.  This were going really wrong for Star Wars at the point, and all of the adults in the audience knew it.

For Sith, I just read the book.  It was like a good soap opera set in space.  Mostly forgettable, but not really "bad" in the way the other two movies were...

... until I deliberately sat down to watch it after seeing the RLM review years later.   What a stinker.  I laughed and laughed, especially during the scene were Anikan tells Padme she looks beautiful, and then she turns to the camera sporting one of the worst make-up jobs in cinematic history.  I fell asleep twice during Anikan vs Obi Wan, but stuck to my guns and backed it up each time so I could watch every single second.  Needless to say, it did not redeem the trilogy.

After that I went back and read the books for all three of them back to back  and discovered that Menace sort of worked as a novel, but the Clones novel was actually worse, somehow, than the movie.  Sith, as a novel, was totally ruined by the actual movie and the bookmark is still in it on page 127 to this day where I stopped  reading.

S5 and S6 of the Clones Wars has sort of supplanted the movies in my head canon, but I do occasionally watch the Fall of the Jedi edits.

:)  I looked forward to the PT for a long time, I anticipated learning about young Anakin/Vader and what drove him to become "Vader" and what basis there was  in his past for his retaining that "good in him".  The PT completely exceeded my expectations.  In addition to giving us the lowdown on Vader, we got great new characters like Grievous, Mace, Padme, QuiGon Jinn, Maul, Dooku, etc and learned more about Obi-Wan, Yoda and the beginnings of Luke/Leia.  There were some sour notes like Jar Jar - but that is similar to the OT's Ewoks, neither of which I was particularly fond of.  Nonetheless, the PT was an entertaining adventure with better effects and more saber battles, plus we got to explore the old republic with the temple and its politics, and the Emperor before he looked like a crusted piece of fish, lol.

I have been a fan for many years and I have heard many reasons why the PT sucks, I just do not happen to agree with them.  But then perhaps that is because I am such a huge Vader fan.  For me it is fine if some don't like it.  It is not worth arguing the point at this late date as most are firmly planted in their viewpoint.  Hopefully we all end up agreeing that VII is great.

What politics?  Anakin whining about not being a Master doesn't count.

I guess you missed the part where Yoda goes, "President, Lyndon LaRouche should be.  Vote for him you must in the 2000 elections!  Sqwaawk!" while Mace Windu nods gravely.

I can pin point a specific moment where it hit me that the PT was bad.  My friends and I were in the theater seeing AOTC opening weekend, and during romance scene with Padme and Anakin, I look over and one of my friends was fast asleep!  I was repressing my feelings that these movies sucked, simply because it was SW and Lucas could do no wrong during the OT days?

Once I was able to shake my naivity towards the new movies, then as I was able to look at the PT just like any movie I would see.  These weren't the movies I was looking for.

I like to distinguish between whether I enjoy them, vs. whether they suck.  My conclusion over time has become that TPM sucks, but I honestly enjoy it for unknown reasons.  AOTC sucks and I pretty much only enjoy laughing at the parts that suck the worst.  ROTS just sucks period and I can't make it from one end of the movie to the other without constructing a noose and hanging myself.

As to when I realized it - I guess it was in the theater during AOTC when, during Anakin's sleeping/dream scene, the audience started laughing.

I realised The Phantom Menace sucked when I read the comic adaptation and script book before the film even came out (I bought both, as I was certain it would be awesome, and I couldn't wait to learn more about it).

It just seemed flat, the trade dispute stuff didn't make much sense, and it was just "off" in tone. Jar Jar's dialogue was incomprehensible in written form (probably a blessing). The movie trailer also raised a red flag, even as everyone was getting hyped - it just didn't feel like Star Wars to me, somehow - I think I saw this first, come to think of it, and bought the two books because I thought the real excitement of the movie would come across there.

That said, even though deep down I was disappointed, I hoped the movie would be better than the early indicators suggested. Alas... it was The Phantom Menace. I didn't even think the "highlight" of the film - the Maul fight - was very good, to be honest.

I held out hope for each of the sequels, but was disappointed in the cinema by both of them. I desperately hoped each one would turn the series around, but... nope. There are still some scenes I enjoy in each movie, but it was all just a terrible let-down, really.

I saw it the weekend of the week it came out, at the Odeon in Leicester Square. My heart sank very early into the film. The title crawl didn't exactly reel me in from the outset, read like some very bad fan fiction I thought. The opening shot - what was meant to be THE opening shot for the entire saga! - was utterly forgettable too, though the Star Destroyer opening from Star Wars is damn-near impossible to top to be fair. It was seeing the absolutely awful masks, bad accents and lip-sync on the Nute Gunray character and his minions that made me think this film was going to be bad. Then there was the introduction of Jar-Jar Binks... and I just sank deeper into my chair hoping it would redeem itself at some point... I was sank so deep into it when the film ended I think I was sitting in somebody's lap a few rows behind...!!! ;)

When the film ended, everyone just exited the cinema in stone-cold silence. You could sense the confusion and shock. Then outside we all suddenly started coming out with desperate "well parts of it weren't so bad" comments. I sat there in the pub with my friend and we both knew full-well it was a steaming pile of utter shite, that Lucas had utterly dropped the ball, but where too shell-shocked to admit it. I've never - before or since - been so disappointed in a film, though Prometheus came a little close.
