Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released) — Page 31

Disney should put out a Bluray set of fan films and restorations.

Real nice improvement...is this a script you adjusted for each scene/reel, or did you apply to the entire feature? I'm attempting to lose the pink in Premiere Pro CC but am having limited success.

While I'm waiting for more ROTJ 35mm footage, I decided to take Team N1's Grindhouse release and start experimenting with it for ESB v2.5 and here's the first result:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0dtCY1O9WXzcWI3YU5KUjRKOW8/view?usp=sharing

(In order to see the full quality, you have to download it, not just watch it in your browser.)

The cleanup is a bit too aggressive for the Team's project, of course, but it's exactly what I need to make it fit with the BD footage in Despecialized.

 I just literally shouted "holy shit" at my screen. Wow, it keeps amazing me what people can do with this stuff.

RemoveDirtMC in Avisynth and the Neat Video plugin for AE and some manual cleanup with Clone Stamp in AE.

Harmy...you should just clean up the entire film like this :P

Looks gorgeous. I assume this was done because the droid was recomposited?

The trailers for Star Wars will be restored at some point, but that will be after we are done with the movies.

Ok, fair enough. Man that is impressive though!

Say what you want about film going digital etc. But it really does give you a lot of freedom in film restoration it would seem :P

edit: Btw are you working from the release everyone downloaded, or are you working with raw files sent to you?

Author

From the release. To be honest, I doubt the raw files would be all that much better - plus my main source (the official BD) is a h264 encode, so I think it's quite fine to work with the encoded file.

There have been several versions of ESB, and several color corrections. Most of them were done scene by scene.

==============================

Eastman V0 - Very First Raw print [Reels 1-6]

Eastman V1 - Partially Faded version [R1-6]

Eastman/Fuji 1 - Less Faded Version [R1-6]

Fuji 2 - Least Faded Version [R1-6]

We also have a partial Eastman replacement Reel 3.

The grindhouse is a combination of Eastman V0, and Eastman/Fuji 1.

The final version will be from the Fuji 2, with replacement frames from the others if needed.

=============================================

There are 2 more color corrected versions which will be released at some point.

The Eastman V0, and the partial Fuji 1 which both have different color corrections.

====================================

There are also Raw samples to experiment on.

All the details are coming to the AMPSdeux reddit.

Here's an example of the Raw Print compared with a color correction,

Enthusiasm aside though, it appears to me that the cleaned up version (second link) has less contrast than the uncleaned version .

Could this be the result of the spot remover?

Good job on the cleanup Harmy. We will still be providing you with the Raw scenes for a few more from Empire Strikes Back. But if you can use the release, thats fine also. We figure the Return of the Jedi clips were more of a priority.

How do you guys feel about a releaes like this btw? Technicality the grainyness is part of the movie, since its an optical effect. But I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't like to see an entire release looking that good.

I just wanted to show that I was putting their stuff to good use ;-) Definitely didn't mean to steal their thunder but it would be better to move that discussion here.

And yeah, Jedi is the priority right now, though if you could provide the Jedi shots in the same encoding as the ESB 1080p release with perhaps just a bit higher bitrate, that would be fine and would actually be easier for me, since I've been having some trouble decoding the raw MOV files.

It's all for a good cause, so we don't mind. We're concentrating on Star Wars until that is finished, so don't expect anything complete for Empire Strikes Back for awhile.

You mean the extra content? What's to restore, they look glorious!

Some people don't like films unless they've had all of the dirt and grain scrubbed out until it looks like waxy video. *shrugs*

If I wanted that, I'd just watch the GOUT or Lowry.

Aside from the severe color fading, this looks way better than less popular films I've seen at the cheap theatre on 35mm (which sadly has recently switched over to digital). I can't wait to finish watching it later...but I have to... =/
