Different ages Star Wars

I'm not familiar with the new Star Wars stand alone film.

I think there is lots of room for different kinds of Star Wars films from G rated to R rated. As we all get older I personally want darker stories in that universe. I want something more complex and grey.

The prequels tried to go there but George tried to keep it all PG but it needed to go to a really dark place to be good.

I was looking forward to the "Deadwood" style of Star Wars. I hope Disney can produce different styles of content from Star Wars that can appeal to all ages.

Of course not. Good story telling can be told in many different ways.  Just look at Pixar and the new Disney films.

It's just a matter of taste to me. I love Toy Story and Finding Nemo but I also love Game of Thrones and Deadwood. I think a darker Star Wars would be refreshing. The prequels needed to be darker given the subject matter. Jedi's should have been hunted down and murdered. Not going darker does not do that story justice.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of the underground world of Star Wars but it doesn't necessarily need to go a "dark" place.

Dark as in this

or dark as in this

If the former, yes, I'd like to see a SW film with that level of darkness. If the latter, no -- hell no.

I would just like to see competent people making a movie for a change.

"Darkness"?

Star Wars is kinda a fairy tale. I don't mind 'darkness' involving destruction, scariness, fear, even pain and death.

'Darkness' like the Batman "Arkham Asylum" games I can do without. I'd hate to see everyone be dirty physically, bad language, sexual content, drugs, degradation, and revealing outfits be (as is all too common) offered up as a thin layer of 'adult sophistication.'

Dark as in more fucking crushed blacks? ;D

Ha. Yes, exactly, fairy tales get pretty dark. Hansel and Gretel anyone?  Grimm's Fairy Tales?  I guess it all depends on what someone's definition is for themselves. I don't think the prequels got dark enough. Jedi's were meant to be hunted down and murdered by Vader. That is pretty dark to me. Sex, swearing? No. That's tacky. We don't need that unless it's true to the character. The dark I'm talking about is like an honesty with the characters. Pixar movies can get dark. Disney movies like the new one Big Hero Six has the parents die in the first 15 minutes can get dark.

But yeah it all just comes down to some good honest storytelling. A lot of bad stories are made just because they are rushed into production. So many movies are not ready to be made. Lucas was in a position where nobody thought he would be successful so he had to make the best movie he could. The whole idea he could fail helps make Empire. He knows he can't pull this shit off so he brings in help. Then later he tries to come back and make the movies himself where even if he sucks he still makes money!

So maybe my title is wrong for this thread. Maybe we don't make multi age Star Wars movies. We make really honest movies about really bad and good people and everyone else that falls in between.

I wouldn't mind seeing a dark movie, but if that involves sex and lots of swearing, then yes, I'd rather they didn't.

I am now trying to picture what a Star Wars movie directed by Frank Miller would be like ...

 You were ok with AOTR...:p

You bleeped out your swearing...and though I probably would have been happier without the "sex scene" (not least because I can't listen to certain dialogue without it sounding like something dirty), it was euphemistic, not explicit.

EDIT: And swearing isn't a big deal--it's just used unnecessarily a lot of the time, and that I don't want. I quite enjoy The Usual Suspects, for instance.

But sometime you just gotta say fuck it, and use some swears.

I'm leary of Star Wars going "dark" as often times filmmakers mistake over seriousness for darkness. Star Wars has gone to dark places and I think it's fine if they continue to, but the point, as always is to tell an entertaining story. If the darkness gets in the way of that, it's a problem.

Back to the sex and swearing, if they ever make a Han Solo or bounty hunter movie (which they likely will) I'll be annoyed if neither of those things are present. They don't have to go for an R rating, but keeping it kid friendly would just ring false.

Being unnecessarily explicit about sex when it can just be implied or mentioned in passing is what I don't like. I don't want to see nudity in a Star Wars movie (Chewbacca, Jabba, etc. aside). If I wanted that, I'd go watch porn.

Does the EU have a lot of made up swearing? (Ala frack and felgercarb in classic Battlestar Galactica.) We only hear hell and damn in the OT, and whatever the heck Artoo says when Threepio warns him to watch his language.

The old Marvel book and the Brian Daley novels had Han and even Chewie flirting with lovely ladies, (and Han was making out in the rough cut of the cantina scene) so they can get away with at least that much.

Boba Fett can operate by a code, and be more honorable than his fellow scum, but they shouldn't shy away from him killing in cold blood if the story calls for it. I was watching the most recent Riddick movie the other day, and thinking Vin Diesel could be a great Fett!

It's about 32 years too late for that. ;)

Leia wasn't nude....assuming that's what you're referring to.

As for swearing, there's "kriff" and several that are intended to sound like "frick" and the F-word.

Does Jabba's green dancing girl ring any bells? ;)

Star Wars should just go with normal swearing, in my opinion. Galactica also made up words for units of time and distance, something Star Wars doesn't.

Disney isn't about to let anyone drop the F bomb in a Star Wars film.

And I totally forgot about Jabba saying poodoo!
