The "Farsight" Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread (Released)

(Edited)

This Info/Feedback thread is all abouth the “Farsight” Original Trilogy Set that was posted on Myspleen.net

This info was lifted from myspleen…

Major differences in this version compared to others are Anamorphic video, ac3 sound, improved video bitrate, and an extremely high amount of care taken to ensure that the result is as good as possible given the source (an old film print on analog medium).

Source is the 9-disc LaserDisc set, the best available source for these versions of the movies. Encoded through S-Video, with great care to get 0 dropped frames, correctly merge the 6 disc-sides per film, properly convert the framerate, deinterlace the video, clean up analog noise w/o blurring the image, normalize the sound, and fix the various field-order errors in the original source. Basically, it’s unlikely you’ll see a better version of these films any time soon.

The Lowdown…

Star Wars - Original Trilogy - The “FARSIGHT” Edition includes an EXTRAS disc - The extras come from the Definitive Laserdisc set, and includes all the documentaries, interviews, trailers, concept art, production stills and a DVD-Rom folder with the stills from the LD!

I'm such a slacker

I promised Farsight screenshots in the official "screenshots" thread but have been way too busy lately. Don't worry thought, these are forthcoming.

I will hopefully get to post more screenshots early next week.

I was expecting to get the ISOMIX ESB transfer last week and had planned another round of screenshots then but that didn't happen. I have the ISOMIX ESB disc now so I should get back to some screenshots soon and the Farsight set will appear in this round as well.

ESB is missing the Leia welding footage, so it was probably sourced from an early pressing of the '93 LD.

In ROTJ, where the smoke from Vader's funeral pyre rises up to meet the fireworks, the image breaks up.
Sorry I don't know all the jargon -- "pixellization" ? "encoding error" ? -- it looks yucky for an instant.

The bonus disc has the still image galleries outside of the DVD-Video zone, and within the DVD-ROM zone.
Farsight's still image galleries are visible on a computer, but not as slideshows on a standalone player (unlike Dr.Gonzo's bonus disc.)

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

"but they are too bright as well..."

Agreed.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

I have the farsight and tr47 versions. Of the two, the TR47 is much sharper, and has better color, but not by much. But i like the 5.1 audio on the Farsight, it is a bit softer overall, but that can be easily fixed.

I've had my head so far up my bum that I totally missed this set. Do you have it available Rikter?

I'm trying to look at every set out there to ensure I haven't missed any detail in any scenes with my capture.

Speaking only for myself and not Rikter, Yes they're available

Off-topic, but I don't think Farsight is a regular here so I guess he won't mind

Don't ask me -- I'm hardware-challenged !
My TV is 20" with only composite input using a generic cable that came with the $35 non-progressive player,
so I've got no idea which set has the sharpest picture.
I prefer Dr.Gonzo's colors, although my set is uncalibrated.
I like TR47's sound, but my stereo lacks ProLogic or any other surround flavor.
But the most important thing is I'm watching Star Wars at home, finally !
My Faces VHS Pan/Scan box (hey, it was a gift) is collecting dust
still in shrink-wrap because I never owned a VCR.
But now I can watch Star Wars at home !!!
Gonzo's set was my first, and still the one most frequently watched.

And the avatar I pinched from sifo-dyas....

Here's a Farsight question for you all.

DVD 4 (The Extras) has cover art in a subfolder.
There's also three files there with the extension ".DVD".
Can anyone tell me what these files are and what program will open them?

Finally is there cover art for Disc 4?

Soooo. Guess that's a big fat no-one.

I did find a great 4 set of cover art. The info on it is more correct than the cover art on disc 4 of the Farsight set.
Does that make sense?

The 'official' Farsight labels say DD5.1 and subtitles for English, Chinese, Malay and Indonesian?!
The set floating on eMule (along with a .rar package of the Farsight set) says DD 2.0 and English subs for Alien Languages.
Artwork is very nearly the same though.

I'll be using this pack. PM me if you want a copy of this cover art pack.

Does anyone have art for DVD labels? I'm still looking for that...

What program and filters (and settings) did you use to deinterlace? What program did you use for encoding the video?

Does anyone know what program, filters and settings farsight used to deinterlace? I want to try it on my own transfer. I can't find a good way/filter to deinterlace, and he seems to have done a good job at that.

Arnie: Laserdiscs are an interlaced source. You do NOT de-interlace when encoding to DVD afterwards. Therefore the answer is "nothing", Farsight would no doubt have not de-interlaced the movies (unless he didn't know what he was doing). When you watch on a computer, an automatic bob/weave filter make DVD's appear to not be progressive since your PC display requires progressive input.

You only de-interlace if your finished product will be a PC format such as Xvid/DivX, etc.

And before you ask about progressive scan DVD players, they internally convert to progess from interlaced information.

For all your video information, conversion and transfer needs, check out videohelp.com and doom9.net.
