So it is looking like the old script for the next Star Trek movie is being thrown out because it wasn't working, if there is a complete rewrite I wonder if Shatner will still be doing a cameo.
It seems to me that if Paramount ever wants these movies to become really big they need to let the new cast stand on their own and not keep reminding people that they are younger replacements for other actors they love by having the older actors pop up all the time. TNG didn't become big by having a TOS cameo in every episode, maybe movie three with a new director and writer would be a good point to start letting the new cast stand on their own and blaze their own trail. Then again with the movie set to come out in 2016 a Shatner cameo may not be something the studio wants to pass up. It will be interesting to see what Paramount decides to do at this point.

I don't think you need to turn your brain off to enjoy it. Sometimes small events do make big changes in history. While some people may have the same position in life, their life experiences may have brought them there in different ways.
The whole altered timeline thing is just ridiculous. It was their pathetic attempt to reboot the franchise without alienating their entire fanbase. And I'm saddened to see there are still people who try to defend it.

This is just from off the top of my head, I haven't seen either film in quite a while but I know there's plenty more.
Some of the constant just plain story inconsistencies are covered here and here.
But honestly, why is anyone defending a film series that claims a single star going super nova is a threat to the entire galaxy? If that's not a request to turn off your brain I don't know what is.

Turn off the brain? Sounds more like a request to remove the thing and flush it down the toilet.
And then turn it into compost and replace it with mashed potatoes.
Even I stop short at defending scripts written by Orci and Kurtzman.
The truth is, though, they're not completely worthless. If you get past the inconsistencies and the fridge logic, there's still interesting stories being told with interesting characters. Major props to Abrams, the cast, and the rest of the crew for bringing that out and making people forget about the inadequacies of the scripts. (Good thing there are new screenwriters for 3!)
The alternate timeline thing was a clever way to bridge the two universes and make everyone happy, but it does create some serious headaches if you think about it too much. I find it's easy, though, to put continuity issues aside and view these films on their own, as a reboot.
Yeah the fact the AU is different doesn't really bother me and I was willing to go along with Kirk being a jerk in the first movie because it looked like he learned his lesson at the end of that movie but then when he was an even bigger jerk in the second movie and we got Blingons, that was were I lost it. Well that and when all the 9/11 truther stuff showed up in the story and people's actions stopped making a lick of sense. Oh and that stupid death cure, I mean is McCoy just too stupid to know that he should take a sample of Khan's blood and replicate the death cure in it or in the next movie is everyone who died in this one going to be alive again?
As I said I was willing to go along with the dumb stuff(but that super nova was still pretty dumb)if that was what was needed to get Star Trek back if the next movie showed some improvement, but instead the next movie was even dumber and I hated Kirk even more.
This is just painful. I hope whoever the new writer is will have enough clout and good ideas that they can turn things around, really I do but it seems like Paramount is actively trying to destroy Star trek, so i don't hold out much hope.

I am hoping that is just him trying to make people think he is still in control when he isn't. From what I have read he got where he is by playing Hollywood power games and one of the reasons he is off as director is that he was way too pushy and rude to everyone else on the film and no one wanted to work with him. If that is true then it is very likely he is putting up a front.
I don't think paramount is happy with him, if they were why fire him and throw out his script? Also why get rid of his script if he will still have control over the new script. I am hopeful this means new smarter writers are now in charge.

I'm on record as enjoying the new movies. I'm also on record as literally throwing my hat to the ground in frustration at that scene in the IMAX theater.
I'm with you here.
The new movies are what they are, fun pop corn experiences for the theater. That said, I own both blurays and enjoy seeing them on my 60 inch Sony projection TV. Without any other NEW Trek on the horizon with ANY of the previous incarnations heading it ....... I gotta have "some" Star Trek at least.

Yeah by that point I had pretty much given up on the movie but even i felt bad for the new cast when I saw that scene. Out loud I said "Really Paramount, Can't you let these guys stand on their own?!" that was just so cheap. Oh and how does Spock know Khan is bad in this universe any way? I mean in the prime universe he was never pure evil before he went insane and in the AU Khan's main goal seemed to be to just save his people and destroy the weapons he had been forced to build, that is not really the height of evil and even if Khan is pure evil he is clearly a completely different person and thinks in a completely different way so what would make either Spock think that any advice old Spock would have to give could be of any help?
Not only is the scene rude to the new cast but it doesn't make any sense in the story. Thank goodness the guy who wrote it isn't writing the next movie.

I hate to agree with you on anything, but I agree with you.
There seem to be two camps, those who loathe the two movies, and those who acknowledge the flaws but still enjoy them. I continue to fall in the latter camp.

I love the side projects that Tim Russ and others are involved with but I was leaning more towards DS9, Voyager, and yes .... even Enterprise. It would be nice to get a film or two out of Paramount that gave us Federation story lines with these shows being the main character focus during said stories ...... I mean who would NOT want to see the Defiant, DS9, or Voyager on the BIG screen in a far more extended and action-plausible presence. I KNOW I'd be down.

I should point out that I DID enjoy the "Section 32" angle for ITD. I was happy that DS9 did kinda dive in to it some but I wanted to see more.
I'll say one good thing about Abramstrek -- it's inspired me to begin creating my own Star Trek reboot, one which stays true to the spirit of original Trek while moving beyond all the bad science, rubber forehead aliens, and Roddenberry's stupider post-TOS ideas.
