Dentist Horror Stories

I had to get my wisdom teeth removed today and it took them over an hour and a half just to remove one; it was horribly painful and it freaked me out that it took so long. Now I have to go to an oral surgeon and be asleep for the removal of the next 3 in a few days.

What horrific dental work stories do you have?

About the worst thing that's happened to me at the dentist was the removal of a baby tooth that was taking a while to come out. :P I haven't even had cavities.

In high school I was dating my dentists daughter, and he forced us to split up because, while doing a routine cleaning appt on me, he was able to conclude from my teeth that I was a smoker.

Ouch! I've never heard of being awake for wisdom teeth removal. I had three removed when I was in high school, but they couldn't find the fourth one. Also had two baby teeth removed around the same time that were causing problems, because the adult replacements never showed up.

It was at this point I suspected I might be a mutant. ;)

This was soon followed by several years of painful orthodontics, elastics that made it hard to talk, and a retainer designed to "train" my tongue to not laterally thrust against my teeth. "Lateral tongue thruster" sounds really kinky now that I think about  it.

Damn retainer would stink really quickly if I ate with it in, and McD's french fries would make it unbelievably gooey for some reason. The braces conducted cold as well. I wasn't rid of the damn things until I was almost through college.

In the mid 70's, I was treated for a benign tumor deep inside my upper gums by a dentist that could have given Steve Martin's dentist from Little Shop of Horrors a run for his money. A nasty person like that shouldn't be allowed to treat children.

I suspect another dentist from the early 80's of needlessly putting fillings in, as I've not had cavities since then.

I am very thankful I have an honest and kind dentist today. He looks disappointed when he can't find anything amiss with my choppers though.

Brilliant, I reckon there is a script for a Hollywood Comedy in there. Possibly with Steve Martin playing the Dentist, in a sly nod back to LSOH. With Ben Stiller (Heavily made up to look younger) in your role. You can have that gem of an idea for free ;-)

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

Haha it is pretty comical.  Although I did quit smoking.  (cigarettes anyway)

I haven't been to a dentist since I was in Grade 1 -- ie. the early '90s.

 That sounds rather dumb.

When I had my wisdom teeth out, I woke up at home!

Also, back in the 60s they used to do fillings without novacaine.  I had the dubious pleasure of being on the receiving end of one of those.

It was all a dream clearly.

I've still got 3 of my wisdom teeth. I only had the fourth out because it was damaged. They had to bash at my jawbone a bit and lever out the last part of it. Definitely an experience but not painful or scary in any way.

The only thing that keeps me away from the dentist is the cost.

My Dentist looks like Jimmy Carr.

Now do you see why I'm so pessimistic?

Well, I’m heading to the dentist tomorrow for fillings, which is no doubt going to be a terrible experience.

Thread title made me think of that cheesy movie The Dentist with Corbin Bernsen.

Don’t do drugs, unless you’re with me.

Fillings aren’t so bad.

Well, I survived the appointment. I have another one next week, and then another the next day though

Dentist update: I went to my appointment today and the experience was actually very pleasant and easy. I have an excellent dentist and I made it through the filling in less than 20 minutes. That being said, I had to drive through the most horrifying snowy weather I’ve ever experienced in my life. It took four times the usual amount of time it takes to get to the dentist’s office. I’m probably lucky to have made it there and back alive.

That’s good. Steal any anesthesia? How much?

Possessed is also pleasant and easy. Or at least, he’s easy.

Well, I got my last appointment over with today. Now I won’t have to go back to the dentist for 6 months.
