Looks like this will be well worth checking out, especially for a family movie night later this week.

Was finally happy to get a good deal on a TV that can support true 24fps playback, and it certainly makes a difference, so this will be a nice treat to enjoy.

Finished watching this last night, definitely turned out better than I expected. Also noticed that the matte on Luke after falling down the trench looked more blue than I've seen previously. Looking forward to seeing more.

Is there any chance it could be uploaded to a different tracker? Yesterday it didn't move a bit and now I get a weird error message - "Trying to seed yourself?" - WTF?

This is truly a dream come true! It really is. The digital equivalent of owning ones own 35mm print. Even if an official release does actually happen, it'll be ultra clean and probably closer to a digital projection rather than an organic looking release print. This is about as close as its possible to get to see Empire as it appeared in cinemas in 1980 I should think, short of building a time machine! Thanks to everyone at Team -1 who made this release possible. Can't wait to see this projected via my Epson 3200 later this week :)

Skipped a bit through it and it looks gorgeous. Even in this raw state, it completely kills the 2011 BD. Probably every other home video release too, for that matter.

I absolutely can't wait till I can sit down and properly watch this. Thank you so much!

Here is the 720p version of the Yoda cleaning test sample.

I noticed some really odd flickering on the ground and on the front landing gear. Is that an artifact from some automated clean-up process?

team_negative1 said:

Perhaps, but more likely from the actual scanning process. This was from the oldest print we have. The newer Fuji prints exhibit a different appearance.

Is the "Grindhouse" release based on the new Fuji prints? There was a complete absence of the strange flickering on the ground and on the landing gear in that uncleaned version of the scene.

It really looks like an automated scratch remover went to town on any white reflections it detected and tried to mask them. Wherever there were bright white reflections in the Grindhouse release is where that strange flickering manifested itself in the cleaned sample.

This is really great!
Are there any plans on releasing the other two films in this way any time soon?

Could somebody post some uncompressed shots of the cloud city approach from this Grindhouse release please? It's going to take our connection a few days to download the MKV, and this is probably my favorite scene (visually) from Empire. Ta muchly ;)

Just watched the 1080p version and damn if this ain't old school at its finest... all scratchy and f'd up, but in a good way.  Just for shits and giggles, I added the best 5.1 track that syncs from about when Han and Leia have their sitdown on Bespin to more or less when Vader says "Bring My Shuttle."  Awesome experience with the booming audio.  It would definitely be worthwhile to sync the whole thing.  The lightsabres during the duel remind me of how magical they seemed in theaters back in the day.  Anyway, greatly appreciate the effort by Team Negative1 and this is a remarkable way to watch Empire, once again.

Impressive...most impressive.

Did you guys decide to put this out since the new movies are coming out all cleaned up?  I agree the new releases will look good but will not have the same feeling as this does. This makes me feel young again.

Yeah, sure. Snapped a bunch of 1080p PNGs using VLC Media Player:

You should be able to download the full-res pictures on the page. Apologies for the screwed-up order.

Thanks every so much - really appreciate it. Man they look great! :)

This transfer is simply extraordinary, so many thanks for giving us the preview - colour tweaks aside, it's hard to imagine the film looking much better than this! (The extras package is a lovely addition too - any idea of the vintage of the 'Season's Greetings' snipe?)

So I - and I daresay others - would like to burn this to a video BD, but I'm not familiar with the restrictions of 4:2:2 colorspace. Is there a quick route to BD-friendly video without re-encoding?

 No.

100% Lucasfilm approved. No additives, no artificial scenes.

Accept no substitutes.

Even in this mostly unrestored state, I am amazed at how it looks. Can't wait for the final version.

I haven't seen Puggo Strikes Back. Obviously the Negative1 Grindhouse edit looks better, but would you say that the ladder looks cleaner than the former, even without any restoration involved?

edit: Didn't notice your all natural post. Do you really think your projects are Lucasfilm approved?

Sooo, I downloaded the 720p DVD9 version. Do I just burn it on to a DL DVD disc as is ("write files/folders to disc" using ImgBurn)?

As is, the MKV is neither DVD nor AVCHD compatible, so you cannot simply burn it to disc unless you know that your player can handle files of this kind.

I was hoping I could burn it to DL DVD and watch it on my PS3 (like i did with Harmy's DE AVCHD) but I guess that's not going to happen. The .mkv plays on my crappy laptop but it's too choppy to enjoy. I wonder if anyone is planning to make an AVCHD conversion or something?
