Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released) — Page 114

I just saw a clip of the end of The Empire Strikes Back where Adywan put HD video to an audio track that someone recorded in the movie theater back in 1980. So you got to hear the cheers when R2 fixed the Falcon's hyperdrive and the chuckles as Vader did his double-take out the viewport.

I thought it would  be fantastic if Harmy's ESB had that full audio track but the odds of that are naturally pretty slim.

However does anyone know where to find the audio track? Perhaps even in-theater tracks for each OT movie?

I think it would be a pretty awesome experience to pop it on an MP3 player or phone and listen to it while watching Harmy's ESB on mute. :D

I really enjoy the "Commentary for the Visually Impaired" track on the Star Wars:DE 2.5 MKV. It's like having a movie-length audiobook with the real actors voices.

Is such a thing available anywhere to find for ESB? If not, why is there one for Star Wars but not for ESB?

Hey Harmy, several posts back you said the early shots of the Star Destroyers were problematic because the blu-ray had too many crushed blacks that looked like ink blots spread all over the Star Destroyers and indeed when you uploaded the first workprint you tested by placing footage from the 1997 Special Edition PAL in those areas, yet scrapped those and stuck with the blu-ray footage for the end product, so I guess you decided it was better to have a better source for those shots. Does that mean team negative1 will provide you with 35mm sources for future versions?(i.e. v2.5, v3.0)

Hey Harmy, is there any visual difference between the MKV and the AVCHD versions?

So, the mkv of the esb despecialized 2.0 has digitally added ewoks. Why would anybody want to download something that claims to remove SE stuff yet adds its own?

Oh wait, it's TV's Frink making the ewok comment. He has no credibility. :P

...I knew he was probably joking about the ewoks anyway, but I couldn't resist.

Nobody sang The Bunny Song in years…

No, the real issue here is that the aforementioned inserted Ewoks have no table manners. And dining with Vader in Bespin, no less...

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

Hello, Harmy -

This is my first post, so please bear with me.

I have just had the pleasure of watching The Empire Strikes Back Despecialized. I've had a lot of fun. Empire was once my favorite film, and I've seen the original, undoctored version dozens of times. I never thought I'd see it in such good fidelity, as my primary exposure comes from watching the 35 mm version on early '90s-era VHS. (It was recorded from an HBO cable channel broadcast around 1992.)

Your restoration work is truly terrific; still, I did notice several noteworthy imperfections of which you might not be aware. I believe the most significant issue occurs at approximately 1:05:00. After Luke confronts "Vader" in the cave, the scene briefly returns to Yoda and R2 before moving to the star destroyer. As far as I know, the Yoda-R2 interlude was reinserted as part of the "Special Edition." It was not present in the original cable broadcast, and I don't believe it was included in the first theatrical release. Of course, it's also possible that it appeared in the 70 mm version, which apparently features a slightly different cut of the film.

Other observations

- 0:52:10 - An imperial officer's transmission is lost as a result of an asteroid impact. I hadn't seen this effect before, although I've heard it was included on certain laserdisc releases. I wouldn't be surprised if it was present in the 70 mm 1980 version, but it's not part of any original 35 mm release I've seen.

- The isolated score you've included is the one featured on the 1997 2-disc Special Edition set. It features alternate music that wasn't used in the original theatrical release.

- I could be wrong, but I remember Yoda's final line as simply, "There is another," rather than "No. There is another." (1:24:31)

I noticed a couple of visual glitches, too, but I imagine you know about them.

Thanks again for your time and effort--a beautiful job on a beautiful film!

Best regards,

Brian

Each sound track comes from laserdiscs or other sources that were from the original releases. There are no Special Edition sound mixes included. Now there was a mono mix done that has a number of little changes to it. Listen to the 16mm print mix and see if those lines are there.

Also the interlude you're talking about is in the original release. It's in every home release prior to the special edition and in the 35 mm print that has seen the light of day.

The officers being destroyed by the asteroid was in the original release as well, but it was usually lost in home video transfers because it was cropped out to fit on a square television.

Trust us that there are people here who know every little detail about this film and if something was not faithful to the original someone would have spoken up.

But you are right about the isolated score. There's the piano prelude to the battle of Hoth present on the mix that isn't in the original mix.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Yeah, I have to agree with Mabimao. Wheeldeal, the issues you've raised (except the isolated score) are incorrect. You can easily download the Team -1 35mm version and see for yourself.

This has always been there.

The reason you may not be familiar with it was because the hologram of the Imperial officer who dies (he's on the bridge of the Star Destroyer you see get smashed by an asteroid in the establishing exterior shot) has traditionally been panned-and-scanned out of the image when transferred to television to focus on Vader, who is on the opposite side of the shot.

It has always been visible on all anamorphic and 70mm prints and letterboxed video editions.

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

“You don't do ‘Star Wars’ in Dobly.”

The isolated score can't really be said to be 'incorrect', because its aim was to reproduce the music as originally composed by John Williams, not the edited version that is actually heard in the film itself.

There are numerous differences, mainly in terms of things having been left out of the final cut so that certain scenes would be unscored, even though Williams had initially written music for them.  It's actually quite a lot of fun to watch Empire with the full score running in synch.

While I'm waiting for more ROTJ 35mm footage, I decided to take Team N1's recent Grindhouse release of Empire and start experimenting with it for ESB v2.5 and here's the result:
