Thanks for sharing those Starman.  I wouldn't say that a capture of the entire film is totally necessary.  I don't know if it's been proven, but I don't think the DVD and HDTV versions are new captures as compared to the theatrical version available on LD and VHS.  I think the 2001 DVD just updated the editing and added a few things.  The footage on your recording should match the HDTV footage of the 2001 version.

I think all that would be needed are the scenes that differ between the theatrical and DVD versions of the films, which could easily edited in with the another HD preservation.  There would be no need to worry about the crawl or subtitles, either.

Since of the missing shots come during the podrace intro and later, your recording already has all of the shots needed to reconstruct the theatrical version of the film.  In the end only about 27 seconds of the theatrical version would need to be recorded.

I'm just curious, though, are you saying this was broadcast in 720p?  It it was 1080i @ 50Hz, it's functionally no different than a regular 1080p/25Hz stream, and would match perfectly with the older 1080 captures.
