Lucas could regain some of his prestige by financing gutsy big budget movies...

Jus saying, his educational charity is a gamble, like almost everything dealing with education, his contributions to film school might not help new people with wild/interesting ideas break into the industry.

If not a s fillmaker, why not be remebered as an amazing patron of the arts and finance some high risk deep big budget movies? With his money he could basically do something just as big as the current Marvel U.

Or he could pull a Steve Ditko and become a recluse that does absolutely nothing to draw any further attention to himself. I, myself, prefer that one.

Lucas doesn't need to regain his prestige. What needs to happen is more people need to be educated on just how overrated Lucas has always been. How he's a hack who got lucky in 1977.

For goodness sake.

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

I doubt many people think he is great besides some Star Wars fanatics.

I think Lucas had some nascent talent back in the '70s, but instead of nurturing it he let it atrophy. By the time TPM rolled around, any talent he had ever had as a director was long since dead.

Well I don't think he's a good director, he is clearly more preoccupied with the spectacle and grandiosity of action set pieces and special effects. This is clear in the PT, where 95% of dialogue and exposition is between characters sitting at tables or couches with a three camera over the shoulder setup. The action scenes are interesting visually but fail because we don't care about the people they're happening to, like he wanted to skip past the "boring" taking scenes to get to the visual effects bits. I don't think he knows what a good story is and how to tell it, he should give that job to writers and directors who know what they're doing. If he wants to keep running ILM, hey, that's cool.

Remember, he also made THX-1138 and American Graffiti. THX-1138 had a limited budget and few effects, and there really weren't any in American Grafitti to speak of. He also did the original Star Wars, which is filmed much better than the PT.

Aren't most action scenes pretty pedestrian besides the Maul duel? Tsui Hark is like that with the story but the action is at leasttop notch.

If you stayed through the end credits to Guardians of the Galaxy, you'd know Howard doesn't need George any more. ;)

Where were you in '77?

Yeah, he should finance Green Lantern 2.

He should finance a season 2 of the animated series.

I'd need to start with the opening credits, first. =P

Definitely recommend it. One of the best films this year.

Well, I'll say this for certain -- should I decide to watch the movie, I'll be going in with low expectations. That way when I come to the end, any disappointment I may have with the film will be at an absolute minimum.

Funding education is a gamble... but funding big budget movies to try to win back the approval of fickle fan boys and snobby intellectuals isn't?
