Monsters from the ID!

Forbidden Planet has been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid.  it gave me so many nightmares, I was always scared someone else's bad dreams would show up to kill me.  The Blu Ray looks amazing and has another Roby the Robot movie on it.

In March 2013, Emmerich stated that the titles of the new films would be ID Forever Part I and ID Forever Part II.[87] The films will take place twenty years after the original, when reinforcements of the original alien race arrive at Earth after finally receiving a distress call.

But look on the bright side -- you could always use the material to make A Ridiculous Independence trilogy. ;-)

Also he was given a choice between doing these and make a trilogy based on Foundation and he choose to make these and now Foundation is being made as a series by HBO.

I will gladly put up with these movies coming out and being hits if it keeps him away from one of my favorite book series of all time.

Snowpiercer (2013)

This was pretty fantastic.  Leaving aside the general WTF of the plot device (a train that can circle the globe endlessly for years and years strikes me as fairly unlikely), this movie was great fun.

You could probably use bits of ID-4's final battle for Return of the Ridiculousness though. ;)

I wish he'd done the same in regards to the Stargate reboot he's going to do after the Independence Day sequels.

As much as I love the original movie and as much as I think SG-1 and its spinoffs are half-baked letdowns, I really don't want to see the franchise back in his hands.

Yeah as someone who counts the TV show as one of my favorites I am not looking forward to that and will be pretending that it has not happened.

I have fifteen great seasons of Stargate adventures to watch on home video and I will stick with them thank you very much.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (EE) (2014)

I know a lot of people have a lot of problems with this movie but I'm an ardent defender of it. I presume it helps that I never read the Tolkien books until after seeing the LOTR movies so I have no devotion to the books. I also forgive PJ his occasional missteps give how incredible the movies are overall. This was the first time watching the movie since seeing it in the theaters two years ago, so I wasn't 100% sure of what was new for the EE, but in general I thought it all worked just fine as a whole.

I read both the LOTR books and The Hobbit twice before seeing the movie and I thought it was great. I didn't expect it to be just like the book (how could it, it's part of a lengthy trilogy based on a book aimed at kids) and length isn't a downside in my book, so I was quite satisfied with the way most of it was done.

both the LOTR books??  I thought there were three.

the Hobbit is part of a lengthy trilogy??  I thought it was a single book that was much shorter than any LOTR book.

You need to read all that again, it made perfect sense.

In spite of his racism against Hasidic Jews, I agree with Frink here.  The Hobbit movies are fun, and they are not rehashes of the LOTR films.  They have a different tone, and I really enjoy them for what they are, in spite of any shortcomings.  I haven't seen the EE, but I look forward to when I finally do.

Yeah I enjoyed them as much as the Lord of the Rings movies because they are their own things.

I am a huge fan of the books but I have no problem with Jackson having fun and doing his own thing and using 48fps does make these the best looking 3D movies I have seen in theaters, I mean I can make out all the details and tell what is going on in every scene!!!  That is a huge step up from every other 3D movie I have ever seen.

Ender's Game.

I have never read the book but this film was okay. Some interesting Sci-fi ideas and it was well shot in that I could always tell what was happening on screen unlike most modern movies and the director at least seems to know what to do with child actors so that is pretty good news. The ending was pretty much sequel bait for a film that is never going to happen and the story is pretty much Starship Troopers crossed with The Last Starfighter but over all not a bad little film.

6.5/10.

     INTERSTELLAR

I liked it quite well, in spite of some concerns. It's the sort of pure sci-fi I appreciate.

     MINOR SPOILERS

Yeah, you could drive the Death Star through a couple of those plot holes. Fortunately, they came near the end when I was feeling ready for a wild ride.

Körkarlen AKA The Phantom Carriage AKA Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness! AKA The Stroke of Midnight (1921)

Though I've gained a very dim outlook on human nature over the years and a very "eye for an eye" sense of retribution against those who cause strife and harm to others, films like this help to remind me of the value of forgiveness and bring me close to believing in man's capacity for redemption again.

9/10

Asylum (1972)

This is definately the weakest of the five anthology horror films I've seen from Amicus Productions. Only the second story with Peter Cushing is really any good; the rest are either okay but blatantly predictable (the first and third stories) or just outright stupid (the fourth and final story with the mini-Herbert Lom). Still, I would have rated the movie a 7/10, but the poorly executed ending just soured it for me.

Babylon 5: The River of Souls (1998) -- 6.5/10

Blade Runner (1982) The Final Cut

Maybe it took a theatrical viewing, but this made me love the film more than I ever had before.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

The tail section's reactions to seeing what goes in those blocks was pretty odd. I'd probably give one a try.

Interstellar

Good film but I pretty much spent the entire time regretting the fact I wasn't seeing it on IMAX 70mm. Didn't help that the projector wasn't focused. :(

Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn (1987)

I used to love this movie when I was a kid, and I still like it, but it just doesn't resonate with me as much as it used to. With that in mind, it should be noted that my following rating is based on sentimentality and nostalgia more than anything else.

9/10

Johnny Handsome (1989)

While watching this film, I couldn't help but think that if it were to be made today, Mickey Rourke wouldn't need any prosthetic makeup to look deformed.

7.4/10

The Bedroom Window (1987)

A good movie, but it could have been a great one if only Elizabeth McGovern's character had been the main character instead of Steve Guttenberg's; she and Brad Greenquist were clearly the strongest characters in the entire film, while Guttenberg and Isabelle Huppert's were the weakest/least interesting.

The ending, as well, could have been much stronger; there clearly was no reliable evidence gained at the end to convict the murderer for the crimes he had committed, at least not in that point in time.

Garfield: His 9 Lives (1988)

Only Garfield's third, sixth, and seventh lives are all that interesting. The rest of his incarnations are incredibly meh.

6.2/10

Say Nothing (2001)

Remove the swearing and Nastassja Kinski's tits and all that's left is material worthy of a below-average TV movie. The writing sucks, the characters suck, and the direction and acting are about as inspired as a blank canvas. The best performance is definately delivered by William Baldwin's hair.

4.5/10

Monster Mash (2000)

I can see why this cartoon did absolutely nothing for me as a kid and still does absolutely nothing for me now. Too weak to be good, too adequate to be bad, it's mediocrity at its blandest.

6/10

Garfield Gets a Life (1991) -- 8/10

Garfield's Babes and Bullets (1989) -- 8/10

her (2013)

Surprisingly emotional and moving. I think this is the best performance I've ever seen from Joaquin Phoenix.
