I feel some guilt doing this, as I feel Post has been picked on a bit by us, but it's a bold opportunity and sometimes you gotta play rough.  Sorry Post.

I always feel guilty when I do well in a game too. I feel that taking on the guilt of winning is a noble thing to do however, so I always do my best to not let it prevent me from playing aggressively. ;)

Well, there are downsides as well. I assure you, Praetorian, we have not coordinated elsewhere. This just turned out the way it did, which is a hazard of three player games. However, the risk to Ric and myself is present as well. In chess, you would simply be down more pieces than we would. But in shogi, opponents who gang up actually run the risk of giving the other more material than they get. For instance, at this point in the game, Ric and I are both attacking you, but I now have better material in my hand. Thus, if we continue to attack you, Ric will find that I will have an insurmountable advantage. It is wise not to gang up on opponents too long, else one find himself at the short end of the stick anyway.

Well, though appreciating the sentiments, such are the hazards one faces in simulated warfare...I'll be the buffer state in this one...

Well, I'm not sure my strange gambles are working out as I'd anticipated either.

Darn!  The more I think about it, the more irritated I am that you captured my bishop first instead of trying to save your rook.  I thought for sure you'd prefer to do that, and now my advantage is diminished.  Curse you!

A favor: if not too much trouble, is it possible to provide the originating tile location on all moves? Saves hunting around for things...

Another challenge of this game is that while in chess I could let you guys duke it out while I sit back and come out ahead.  Here, you guys are trading pieces, and thus actually gaining more mobility as you fill up your cache.  Meanwhile I feel more stagnant.  I am having a challenge knowing what to do with each move, and I have so little time to look.  What's more, I have ideas on how to mate a king, but since checkmate is not victory until both kings are captured, I have to be careful because I don't want to trade valuable pieces for a king.  It puts me closer to victory, but at a material disadvantage which can be exploited and result in loss.  This rules are simpler than Kokusai Sannin Shogi, but it's pretty cool and complex nevertheless.

For sure. I would definitely be doing something with those rooks sooner if taking a king meant defeating someone.

Just as I would have kept mine if it seemed important...

I think that's what your son meant :)  That's what I moved anyway.  So it's your move now, as I've played on that assumption.

...It's been a year now since we started our first game.

Also, it's your turn, dad.

Good times.  I hope we have many more.  I will likely never meet you in life, and I've played more games with you than all my other opponents put together.  It's been a very enjoyable year with you as a playing partner :)

It's been very enjoyable. I was never really into chess, but I find shogi far more interesting and enjoyable, so I'm glad you introduced me to it.

Do you want to play a chess variant in the other thread? A three-player game can be a little slow sometimes...(wink, wink, nudge, nudge to a certain relative of mine). I'll remind my dad to move in case he's forgotten.
