Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 68

Having watched the teaser a few more times, I'm going to say that my initial disappointment has softened somewhat; even the soccer droid looks okay (but only okay) to me at the moment.

I still hate that godforsaken lightsaber to the deepest inner core of my soul, though.

Me too. I also hate that cloak and hood. Sidious and Maul was enough of that for me.

I don't mind the black cloak and hood. Although I really hate that lightsabre (to me it seems almost like they are trying to troll fans with it), my first impression of the villain is very good actually. To me, he is by far the most interesting thing of this trailer.

The Black Hole was in development before Star Wars even came out, and Vincent was already present in the script. Star Wars' success finally got it into production, but I'd hardly call it a knock off.

^Yes I know :-P

But the film that was in development had more cartoonish and action orientated elements injected into the script and production design after Star Wars came out.

The 2001/Jules Verne elements were always there, the laser battles between the Mini-Vader/Stormtrooper sentry robots and VINCent and Old B.E.N...sorry BOB were added later.

So what I told you was true... from a certain point of view.

It's arguable that the Star Wars inspired robots in The Black Hole and Battlestar Galactica resemble the rubbish robots from the PT. So in the end Star Wars sort of ripped them off.

IIRC, they removed backpacks from the sentry robots, because of similarities with the TOS Cylons. Some of the early designs for Maximillian are quite scary. VINCent originally had a very complicated eye design they couldn't get to work properly on set, and the button eyes were substituted at the last minute.

And if we're going to get into who ripped off who...

Would you still feel that way if it was exactly the same, but mauve or chartreuse?

I've come to really enjoy the teaser, except I'm still a little concerned about the cloaked figure and light saber.  It still comes across as cliche to me.  What I didn't like at first was how grim the teaser was.  The characters were all in distress (including the droid) and the music was suspenseful indicating the film takes place in not so good times.  Even when the Falcon shows up, it's being attacked.  Hearing the main title so suddenly was jarring to me initially because of what came before it.  It seemed out of place with the rest of the teaser.

Oh yes. I think the Metropolis influence came more from Ralph McQaurrie than George though.

The 'death of Padme and the birth of Vader sequences do play out rather similarly to the creation of the 'robotrix'.

Both have a vulnerable innocent woman held horizontally in a mechanical medical situation and a part robotic creature being awakening in a throne like chair.

As I said in the non-spoiler thread ...

I personally think that having a new droid rather than rehashing/shoehorning R2D2 and C3PO like in the prequels is a smart idea.

The problem with Artoo and Threepio in the PT wasn't that they were there, it was that the story was written and directed by someone who either never had the knack of writing and directing or lost it.

I don't think there is a single element of those films that felt like it wasn't just shoe-horned in rather than acting naturally.

Part of the compact with the audience is that the droids are the thread pulled through all the numbered episodes so I personally would rather Artoo was in the thick of the action than Rictoo (well he does roll ;-D ).

that was supposed to be one of the charms of star wars - thru all the characters, storylines, trials and tribulations - r2d2 and c3pO would be the constant.  Or at least...thats what we were told :(

Of course we all know what happened, and I actually remember Lucas in the EPisode II commentary stating that he had difficulty finding something for r2 to do!! :O  Overall though, it was really C-3PO that was blatantly out of place and shoe-horned in.  At least R2 had his moments in the opening of Episode III.

Even if it was all along PR sham to advertise more charm and character to the once proud saga formerly known as Star Wars, I hope the producers of the ST actually do recognize the importance of the Droids and work them (not shoe-horn) into the story.  THere is room for both Ball-E and R2/3PO

and really, with all this talk of 'passing the torch' of the OT characters to the ST characters is there really a reason for the droids to pass the proverbial torch?  unless there is a sub-plot in the ST about how they are becoming obsolete ;P

maybe thats why lucas wanted michael arndt!!  to write something about the droids thats similar to the storyline of andy outgrowing the toys in toy story 3!!!  :D

click here if lack of OOT got you down

I think the Falcon shot might be connected to the Boyega shot: the TIEs seem to be flying very close to the Falcon, perhaps in the very next frame one of the TIEs scrapes the Falcon, causing the TIE to crash land. The Boyega shot would then be about Boyega regaining consciousness (or just getting out of the TIE) after the crash. Maybe the ball droid finds him and notifies Ridley.

 Your theory certainly fits with this leaked artwork from six weeks ago;

Normally I give no thought at all to leaked info because it's almost always shit (as we saw with the leaked teaser a few days ago).

However, at least one piece of the leaked artwork from October was spot on with Friday's trailer. These two pieces showing Daisy riding the speeder that looks like a tractor without wheels are reason to consider that October batch as at least being legitimate, even if some don't make it into the finished film.

Should we start placing bets on wether or not this will be the next Phantom Menace? Maybe in another six months...

Didn't they put Artoo's memory into a new astromech body in the EU at some point?

The more I watch this trailer:

1.  The more I like the lightsaber.  Especially the way in which the wielder presented arms....its bad ass.

2.  The less I care about the soccer ball droid.
