This isn't the "Oh, won't somebody please think of the children!!!" thread.

It is, however, the "remember when I actually used to like reading discussions on this site?" thread.

 Sorry, I'll post more.

If there's a New Republic Senate, I want to see it. When people complain about "politics" in the prequels, they're complaining that the subject matter was trade embargoes, not that we saw the Senate at all.

I definitely agree. I think it was cool to see the Senate, but I didn't want to see all the lame discussion about nothing. I think most of us already know what politics can be like--no need to show it in what ought to be fantasy.

I am concerned about some rumors of the story because it betrays the OT in IMO.

OK, its one thing to have Vader as Luke's father, but then Luke/Leia are siblings?  Didn't she kiss him in ESB?  Didn't he have a crush on her in SW'77?

If this were 1982, and the internet existed, many of us here would be saying, "I hope these rumors aren't true that Leia and Luke are siblings, after they smooched in ESB!!!"

So I am essentially saying that none of these movies were needed after Star Wars in 1977.  The deathstar blew up, the good guys won, and yeah Darth Vader and The Emperor were still out there, but the story could have ended, it would be like The Wizard of Oz.  But we went with the changes because we liked the movies, and that is why you have to be open to changes for the ST if they do it right.

you make a good point CO and as I was thinking about your post, it made me realize there actually could be an opportunity for something in the ST.

before getting to that - its true that Empire and Jedi had contradictions.  I guess i let it go for a few reasons.  In ESB (and star wars overall) Having Darth Vader and anakin as the same person is much more compelling and opened up to many possibilties and gave the OT a lot of depth - even if we all found out that lucas had no real back-story developed.    It also helps that alec guiness gave a delivery that made it look like obi-wan is not being entirely forthcoming.

Leia as Lukes sister is harder to defend.  Leia as luke's sister AND vaders daughter stretches it and I emphathize with those in 1983 that found it as ridiculous as I found the storyline of anakin creating 3P0 in 1999.  I guess thats why even though a lot of us like ROTJ, we can admit the rot started with that movie.

Maybe one can look at my feelings and come away with thinking that I let a few things go but now I'm drawing a line.  I guess there is some truth to that.  But i still dont think any of those storylines would be nearly as outrageous as the idea that the Empire is still controlling the galaxy or that Luke goes to the dark side.  One can argue that we accepted some of the dubious twists in the OT because the mythology was still developing at the time (nevermind what we know now, things are of course different) but too much time has past.  Unlike SW, there is nothing at the end of ROTJ to suggest the Empire would continue to rule galaxy and it renounces everything and the whole story would just lose its integrity. Its not progressing, its going backwards.  We all know how much the big twist regarding the SandMan in Spiderman 3 actually ruined things.  THis would be a million times worse.

anyway, so what do I think there is an opportunity for?  Luke and Leia's relationship.  The new movies can be used to build more on this angle.  I think that could make for some interesting stuff.  I heard a rumor that Luke disappears and goes into exile right after ROTJ.  and to me, that idea sucks.  One reason is it makes it seem there are no new ideas and the filmmakers are just trying to 'freeze time' - its awful storytelling.  But the biggest reason - I have a hard time believing Princess Leia, after finding out she had a brother after losing her whole family, would allow luke to just leave and wouldn't move heaven and earth to find him.  So hopefully the rumor is not true and he had been missing only recently.  But i think TFA and the ST overall can explore luke and leia's relationship as siblings.  I loved X-MEN DOFP, but 1 of 2 flaws I found in the movie was that Raven and Beast didnt really have a single scene together, after everything that was built between them in FIrst Class.  It'll be dissapointing if Luke and Leia don't have a storyline and some cool scenes.

anyway, you guys all have a good and safe thanksgiving!

The idea of an Imperial Remnant controlling a few sectors has been around in the EU for a while. Weakened, but enough of a concern the Rebellion has to remain vigilant. It seems unlikely that the entire fleet was in orbit around Endor, or that Imperials everywhere just rolled over when hearing the Emperor was dead.

I think Luke would have stuck around long enough until things were stable before dropping out of sight. (Or the need to leave became overwhelming.) Leia might even be the only one who knows where he went.

Where were you in '77?

Maybe the Empire wouldn't continue to "rule the galaxy," but I think the idea that the Empire would vanish altogether after ROTJ is just stupid.

^That reminds me of a dumbass argument I read by a PT/SE fanboy years ago. He basically said it made sense that the Empire collapsed after Palpatine's death because only Palpatine's evil super-duper Force mind control powers kept the Empire together in the first place. *rollseyes*

Un biased here and cant wait for 7 8 and 9.

78 won't be out until the next century at the earliest.

Look, I hate to break it to you like this, but you probably won't make it. Sorry. I appreciate the dedication, though.

Thankfully, 9 isn't that far off, and I wouldn't necessarily cross out 8 just yet. It might still be decent, despite all the evidence that points to the opposite. In any event: it should tide us over.
