Good grief. Just for the record, with no homo, I've always just found it a dumb term rather than something offensive. It's got to do with people having serious cases of the Notgays rather than it meaning anything offensive.
I've certainly never heard of anyone being offended over it, outside of recognizing the stupidity of the term.

The 'Independance Day' thoughts raises an interesting film question. Is a "stereotyped" character okay if it's a massively positive portrayal?
I can't see the 'Julius Levinson' character as a negative-stereotype as he is such a lovely character. One of the most likeable things in that film.
Other "caricatures" I can think of would be...
Jenette Goldstein "browning up" to play Private Vasquez in 'Aliens'. I suspect Cameron wouldn't get away with that casting these days. But she plays it with total conviction and everybody would want to be that character, male or female. She's so badass.
I go on about how good it is too often but, 'Short Circuit 2'. Fisher Stevens not only "browns up" his skin but puts on a ridiculous exagerated accent and mixes up his words "how time is fun when you're having flies" to play Ben Jarhvi. But again the character is played with such warmth and humour. Ben's such a lovely guy and you are rooting for him to get the girl.
'Short Round' in Indy2. I know people here have stated they find him offensive with all the getting words wrong and such but I was the same age as Shorty once and I wanted to be him. If you love a character this much, can it be a negative portrayal?
I'm sure there are other examples.

On more thing on the no homo incident....and keep in mind it was a while ago, so I may not have the details exactly right. Originally, I didn't edit out the phrase, I called the guy out in public. But then I thought better of it, because I like the guy. So I decided to edit it out instead, not as a form of censorship but rather to keep the discussion private. Of course it was too late and he edited it out himself, and then we cleared the air via PM. You can see in the link Neglify provided (thanks again, buddy!) that the most recent edit was not mine.
So the idea that my edit was censorship is doubly ludicrous.

Likeable, maybe. But was it necessary to write him like that? That's what's odd about him. It's somewhat distracting.

Dude, Ben Jarhvi was so embarrassing. Nothing he said was funny IMHO, just annoying. Not as obnoxious and loud as Jar Jar Binx, but man... Why did he have to be the focus of the second movie? Not that the first one was a masterpiece...

Man, Short Circuit 2 is one my favorite films. Ben was a fantastic protagonist that I related to a lot growing up.
I used to watch it all the time growing up. Now... ehhhh not so much.
It's ok, I mean it's not horrible or anything. It's just not for me I guess.
There's other movies that are really popular that I can't stand. "It's a wonderful life" for example. That and "Electric Dreams", took me just one viewing. I do like Giorgio Moroder though.

There was a story going around that after Aliens came out, military recruiters were putting Vasquez posters in their windows, until they were told to stop by those higher up.

It was, but I can barely remember the wisecracks now. Bill Pullman's character got a lot of Spaceballs jokes from us though.

Anyway,
Big Hero 6 (2014) - I actually saw this weeks ago. It's been awhile since I posted here. I thought this film was relatively good fun with some exciting sequences and laugh out loud moments. Unfortunately the story was pretty much crap and left a lot to be desired. I had quite a few issues with it but my main beef was that there were really no stakes whatsoever. Enjoyable, but could have been a lot better. B
Koyaanisqatsi (1982) - Wow, this is quite a film. Unlike anything I have ever seen before. Who could have guessed that a film with no story and no dialogue is actually really engaging? Brilliant cinematography and score. It sticks with you too, really making you think about the world we live in now. A must watch. A
Filth (2013) - A rather filthy film, though that shouldn't come as a surprise. The plot is... interesting. It's a good satire, though I could have done with some more laughs. It's well made, style is pretty good. The real treat here is James McAvoy, who gives a superb performance. B+
The Most Dangerous Game (1932) - Pretty cool movie. Nice concept and execution. Really short, though, like an hour long. Second act is practically nonexistent. Still, neat pic. B
